This was my very first South Korean drama, a lot of my friends talked about it but I was not interested initially. I watched it out of boredom and ended up being glued to my screen till the very end. It is a historical thriller divided into two seasons (season 1 and 2).

Plot Overview:

This K-drama is about how magic was forbidden in a kingdom called Daeho. This magic allowed souls to move from one body to another(soul-shifting). Lee Jae-Wook who starred as Jang Uk, a young master of the Jang family, raised by a maidservant after his mom died and he was abandoned by his father who sealed his energy gate. Because of this, Jang Uk was dismissed as a rebel.
Although soul-shifting/sorcery was prohibited in the kingdom of Daeho, Go Youn-Jung who starred as Naksu had to use her magic to soul-shift into the body of a weak blind maid, mudeok, to save herself from death. Jung So-Min who starred as Mudeok in season 1 regained her sight immediately, but Naksu who soul shifted into Mudeok’s body couldn’t wield her power due to the weakness of the body she was in. Jang Uk somehow who recognised Mudeok’s true identity as Naksu because of how quick-witted she was, convinced her to become his master regardless of her weakened state, because he was desperate to unlock his energy gate which was locked by his father.
On Jang UK’s journey to becoming a mage, Mudeok’s (Naksu) persona softened and was able to feel human emotions after suppressing for so long. And yes they fell in love in the process and became inseparable. Unfortunately, Mudeok died at the end of season 1 and Jang Uk also, but miraculously both came back to life in season 2.

In season 2, Jang Uk with his new found powers after he resurrected became a very cold persona hunting and capturing rogue soul-shifters. He was cold because he lost his love and master in season 1, little did he know that Naksu’s soul resurrected in her original body from season 1, but as Buyeon(eldest daughter of the Jin family), but she had no memory of her last life as Naksu. Jang Uk and Jin Buyeon were drawn together again by fate.

The season 2 of Alchemy of Souls(light and shadow) concluded with jang uk and, Naksu in the body of Buyeon, eradicating evil from the land of Daeho and beginning a new chapter of their love story, free from burdens of their past.

Ratings/Character Review;
Lee jae wook who starred as jang uk was the main protagonist. He is my favourite character and the reason I fell in love with Korean drama. He infact remains one of my favourite Korean actors till date. Another character I loved was Go youn-jung, I loved how cute she was, she played her role so well. Jung so-min is another character i loved so much, she was so into her character. Hwang min-hyun who starred as Seo Yul, the second male lead was a calm, courteous and intelligent character which made him more attractive.
With all these being said, I’ll give this drama a solid 10/10!! It remains one of the best Korean drama I’ve watched till date, if you’re a fan of fantasy, romance, magic; you should watch the Alchemy Of Souls.

It's available to watch on HiTv for free or on Netflix.

One of the very iconic k-dramas. Most people that weren't formerly into K-drama as a brand, did because of this film. Lovely film choice. Thanks for sharing!
