I cannot name anyone that is a fan of kaiju that would turn down a fighting game. We have proven over the years that even the bad to mediocre ones get a certain level of support. The good ones are remembered for decades if not forever. Probably the most popular one that came close to capturing the essence of giant monsters in a human sized world was King of Monsters on the Neo Geo. It is hard to get the feel right when dealing with fantasy creatures. This is something game developers have struggled with since the early days (remember the “duck dragons” of Adventure?). It looks like GigaBash is close and even brings cinematic flare to gamers.

More Kaiju Than You Can Shake a Stick At

GigaBash features over 20 kaiju for you to play as or potentially fight in the various gaming modes. For instance, playing the Arcade Mode, you only face eight random opponents so it is not likely you will see much repetition early on anyhow.

Story Mode offers four scenarios for you to play through, unraveling the story. Anyone that is a fan of kaiju knows how thin the story can be with these; the cheese is sometimes the second-best thing next to the monsters in these movies.

Got friends around? Check out the Battle Mode and play with up to 3 friends at one time.

Getting Kaiju Right

GigaBash has not forgotten that the environments must be damaged. It is just part of the rule of kaiju entertainment. That means the levels are fully destructible, much like what we saw in the early days with King of the Monsters.

Adding in Ultraman, and Emi, is just one more step in the right direction.

I am a huge fan of kaiju movies and even have several toys based on various characters. GigaBash is definitely on my list to get when I have more time to actually enjoy it.

What about you? What is your favorite kaiju?
