"Wiñaypacha" the first film to be spoken in Aymara language

"Wiñaypacha" is a Peruvian film directed by Óscar Catacora, released in 2017, being the first to be spoken in Aymara.

The story follows an elderly couple, Willka and Phaxsi, who live in a small village in the mountains.

Isolated from the modern world, they struggle to maintain their traditional way of life in harmony with nature.

The film portrays the harsh reality of life high in the Andes, where time seems to stand still and the connection to the land and the community is fundamental.

Through beautiful images and a contemplative narrative, "Wiñaypacha" immerses us in the lives of Willka and Phaxsi, exploring themes of resistance, cultural identity and the passage of time.

The film was chosen to represent Peru at the 91st Oscar Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category,3 but was not nominated.

It premiered at the Lima Film Festival.5 In its third week of release, it received 20,000 spectators.

In 2013 it won the Regional Feature Film Competition, the Ministry of Culture's distribution award, and in 2017 at the Guadalajara Film Festival as Best First Film and Best Cinematography.
