"Woman Of The Hour" is on Netflix.
I often write articles about how you can watch different movies and TV series on Netflix. But, today I'd rather write a few words about a movie I watched yesterday, the brand new thriller directed by Anna Kendrick, "Woman Of The Hour." Is this movie worth watching on Netflix? What is it about?
I have got to admit that I hadn't heard about the movie until 4 days ago as I stumbled upon a positive review online. I didn't really read the review either, I just noticed that it had a very positive title and that it gave credit to Anna Kendrick for her work, especially considering that it is the first movie she has ever directed. I liked the thought of watching a thriller movie directed by and starring Anna Kendrick on Netflix, so as I sat down with my wife and a friend to watch a movie, this was the one we decided to watch. Was it worth it?
Besides the fact that it has received quite a lot of positive reviews, I didn't really know much about the story... so what is the movie about?
"Woman Of The Hour" is actually based on true events.
That was actually one of the big surprises I got as the movie came to an end and they shared some information about the real events on which the movie was based. It was kind of devestating, and really depressing, and also a bit scary to think about it, because it makes you think about what you just saw in the movie in a very different way.
In the movie, we meet a guy, a photographer, who seems to be at getting in contact with lonely women. He is good at encouraging them and he somehow makes the girls feel safe in his presence. But, this is only a temporary situation, because as the hours pass by, it is turning into something much worse, consisting of both rape and strangling of these women. While following our bad guy and his actions, we also meet the character of Anna Kendrick, an actress who is desperate to find a job and to be a success in life. That is hard, and she ends up participating in a dating show on TV where she is the "Woman Of The Hour", the lady who has to choose between three guys (hidden behind a wall) based on the answers they give her to questions she has. Guess who one of the guys participating in the show is?
And yes, that is how it is all connected, and during the 90 minutes the movie last, you can easily have a good time and be curious at how things will progress.
Is "Woman Of The Hour" worth watching?
I have got to admit that I had a good time watching it. I will not exaggerate and call it a fantastic movie, but still, I had no problem sitting quietly for 90 minutes to see the story evolve, and as the data from real life came at the end of the movie, it was actually quite hard to digest how brutal this world can be and how this guy actually managed to get away with so many cruel acts.
It might not be a movie that will make you sweat because it is incredibly tense, but it is tense enough for most people, and it would have been more than good enough to be a cinema film worldwide. But, since it was created for and by Netflix, you don't have to go to the cinema, as you can watch it with your current Netflix subscription immediately instead.
As you can see in the image above, the movie has received lots of praise from the critics, while the audience (at Rotten Tomatoes) is a little bit more hesitant. I would probably give it an 80% score or something like that if I had to. All in all, I give credits and praise to Anna Kendrick for directing her first movie, and I hope she will continue, because it is one of the better movies I have seen in the last couple of months.
Have you seen "Woman Of The Hour" yourself? How did you like it?
