Film Review: HAUSU (1977) Psychedelic art in Japanese cinema

Like a sequence of distorted images, Japanese horror has a lot of threads in terms of its creative and dangerous way of presenting its works. They captivate us with stories that carry a lot of weight but add to that a line of strange colors, and it becomes a disturbing scenario that makes our faces crinkle.
I enjoy Japanese cinema, and from time to time I review the cinematic repertoire that has been made in this part of the world. To my dismissal, I felt I was looking for more of the same until I got this interesting film with animations, weird art, and a particular way of its presentation.

Como en una secuencia de imágenes distorsionadas, el terror japonés tiene mucho hilo en cuanto a su manera creativa y peligrosa de presentar sus obras. Nos cautivan con historias que tienen mucho peso, pero si a eso le agregamos una línea de colores extraños, se convierte en un escenario perturbador que nos hace arrugar la cara.
Me gusta el cine japonés, y de vez en cuando reviso el repertorio cinematográfico que se ha hecho en esta parte del mundo. Para mí desestimación, sentí que estaba buscando más de lo mismo, hasta que conseguí esta película interesante con animaciones, raro arte y una manera particular en su presentación.

Hausu (House) is a 1977 Japanese horror film directed by Nobuhiko Ôbayashi, and I must add that, for the first film by this director (who previously only did TV commercials), I saw a lot of creativity and different direction in terms of the horror genre. The script was written by Chiho Katsura based on the original story by Nobuhiko Ôbayashi. This film combines horror and comedy, although it has more of the latter than the former, showing us a distorted reality through the subgenre of human-eating haunted houses.
The story centers on seven high school girls who spend their summer vacation at the home of the aunt of one of them. Oshare is a teenager who wants to get away from her father and his new lover at all costs, so she asks her aunt, who lives in a lonely house in the middle of the countryside, to spend the vacation with six other friends.
Hausu (House) es un filme de horror japonés de 1977 dirigido por Nobuhiko Ôbayashi, y debo agregar que, para ser la primera película de este director (quien anteriormente solo dedicaba a hacer comerciales de televisión), vi una enorme creatividad y dirección diferente en cuanto al género de horror. El guion fue escrito por Chiho Katsura basándose en la historia original de Nobuhiko Ôbayashi. Este filme es una combinación de terror y comedia, aunque tiene más lo segundo que lo primero, mostrándonos una realidad distorsionada a través del subgénero de casas encantadas devora humanos.
La historia se centra en siete chicas de preparatoria que pasan las vacaciones de verano en casa de la tía de una de ellas. Oshare es una adolescente que busca a toda costa alejarse de su padre y su nueva amante, por eso le pide a su tía, que vive en una casa sola en medio del campo, a pasar las vacaciones con otras seis amigas.
The place is vast and gloomy, the first time I saw it I noticed the typical elements of a haunted house: isolation, age, neglect, photographs that tell stories, among other things. Oshare's aunt is a beautiful, well-dressed, well-groomed woman in a wheelchair; that's when my alerts went off Did none of those girls find it odd that a handicapped woman would look so good and unassisted? Not at all, because the characters as well as the performances seemed so bland to me that there came a time when I was stunned.
However, I was pleased that each of the girls was given a personality according to the nickname (or name) they carried. This one is Son Kung Fu, the athletic girl. Mac (referring to the Big Mac hamburger), is the one who is always hungry. Melody is the one who plays the piano. Gari or Prof, the one with the most wisdom. Sweet, the most tender. Fantasy, the dreamy one, and lastly we have Oshare, her name translates as 'The elegant one'.
El lugar es enorme y sombrío, la primera vez que lo vi me percaté de los elementos típicos de una casa embrujada: aislamiento, antigüedad, descuido, fotografías que cuentan historias, entre otras cosas. La tía de Oshare es una mujer hermosa, bien vestida y arreglada que está en silla de ruedas; allí es cuando mis alertas se activaron ¿A ninguna de esas chicas les pareció raro que una mujer minusválida se viera tan bien y sin la ayuda de nadie? Para nada, porque los personajes como las actuaciones me parecieron tan sosos que ya llegaba un momento que me aturdía.
No obstante, me agradó que a cada una de las chicas les dieran una personalidad de acuerdo al apodo (o nombre) que llevaban. Esta Son Kung fu, la chica atlética. Mac (haciendo referencia a la hamburguesa Big Mac), la que siempre tiene hambre. Melody, la que toca el piano. Gari o Prof, la de más sabiduría. Sweet, la más tierna. Fantasy, la soñadora, y de último tenemos a Oshare, su nombre se traduce como ‘La elegante’.
Each of them is a cute, naive; typical teenage girl. They are always playing pranks and games, but they are very helpful and offer to help Oshare's aunt clean her huge house. 'Tiita' as the lady of the house is referred to throughout the film, has a particular personality. She would always mention that she was lonely, but at the same time she would hold a smile on her face because of the presence of the girls; besides the weird mentions she would make about being surrounded by young girls and stuff, it gives you the automatic feeling that everything will go wrong.
Aside from the simple and definite story, I liked the film mostly for its pulp art, which doesn't just stay captured in the wood chips, but comes out and sticks to the canvas of fabric. Many times we will witness a rather clumsy photographic sequence with low-quality special effects and drawings that look like they came out of some free image editor, but this does not detract from the sympathy and beauty conveyed in the scenes, with that striking way of presenting the story.
Cada una de ellas son simpáticas, ingenuas; las típicas chicas adolescentes. Siempre están haciendo bromas y juegos, pero son muy serviciales y se ofrecen a ayudar a la tía de Oshare a limpiar su enorme casa. ‘Tiita’ como es mencionada a lo largo del largometraje a la señora de la casa, tiene una personalidad particular. Siempre mencionaba que estaba sola, pero a la vez sostenía una sonrisa en el rostro por la presencia de las chicas; además de las menciones raras que hacía sobre estar rodeada de muchachas jóvenes y esas cosas, te da la sensación automática que todo saldrá mal.
Aparte de la historia simple y definida, la película me gustó más que todo por su arte pulp, que no solo se queda plasmado en las virutas de madera, sino que sale y se adhiere al lienzo de tela. Muchas veces presenciaremos una secuencia fotográfica bastante torpe con efectos especiales de baja calidad y dibujos que parecen sacados de algún editor de imágenes gratuito, pero esto no le quita la simpatía y la belleza que se transmite en las escenas, con esa impactante manera de presentar la historia.
The film is precise and shows us the important events almost immediately, using terror as a tool, but it is clear that this is not its objective. All the time I noticed that the director wanted to give us several messages in which he just wanted to make us laugh since the most grotesque scenes were softened by humorous images and one or another circumstance that will make you laugh.
I liked that it took the direction of comedy; although I don't understand Asian black humor, I must say that this movie made me laugh out loud. Today, it qualifies as a cult film for comic horror-loving moviegoers, and while I didn't find it to be the greatest work I've ever seen, it did remind me a lot of films like 'The Haunting' and 'Evil Dead', just to name two.
If you like Japanese horror films; even if it's not a lot of horror you'll find, you might like this movie. Just be prepared with your CGI glasses, as you will need them throughout the film.
La película es precisa y nos muestra los sucesos importantes casi de inmediato, usando el terror como herramienta, pero claramente se ve que ese no es su objetivo. Todo el tiempo me percaté de que el director quería darnos varios mensajes en el que solo quería causarnos risas, ya que las escenas más grotescas eran suavizadas por imágenes humorísticas y una que otra circunstancia que te sacará risas.
Me gustó que tomara la dirección de la comedia; aunque yo no entiendo mucho el humor negro asiático, debo decir que esta película me provocó varias carcajadas que se me salieron sin previo aviso. Hoy en día, está calificada como una película de culto para los cinéfilos amantes del horror cómico, y aunque no me pareció la mayor obra que haya visto en mi vida, me hizo recordar mucho a películas como ‘The Haunting’ y ‘Evil Dead’, solo por nombrar dos.
Si te gusta el cine de terror japonés; aunque no sea mucho terror lo que encontrarás, esta película te puede gustar. Solo prepárate con tus lentes anti rayos CGI, ya que los vas a necesitar a lo largo del largometraje.
Love horror and comedy mix. They always appeal to me more than comedy alone or horror alone. I will add this movie to my watchlist. My first time reading about a Japanese horror genre movie. I have to check it out. This was a wonderful review and it was an insightful read. Thank you for this recommendation, I get to explore other genre.
I totally recommend it, even though it has its weird low quality stuff for viewers, it's very funny and will get you a few laughs. I hope you enjoy it.

Hola @universoperdido, ya la vi de principio a fin, me intrigo, si da risas ciertas situaciones, me hubiese gustado un poquito mas de suspenso, pero bien por ella, me encanto.
