Comedia y terror parecen géneros tan contradictorios, pero que trabajan muy bien juntos; sobre todo si ambos son tan ácidos y antiempáticos como la película que he reseñado. Mucha sangre, eventos inesperados, muertes que parecen sacadas de una película de ‘Scary Movie’, pero con más liquido rojo y vital brotando por allí. No es lo mismo crear una película para alimentar el morbo de sus espectadores, que crear una simplemente para hacerla bizarra y poco creíble por su absurda trama. The Monkey no era lo que yo esperaba, aunque la narrativa de su guion satírico e insólito me hayan hecho arrugar la cara con extrañeza e intriga hasta el final, tengo que decir que es una de las cosas más fuera de base que he visto, y no en el mal sentido, digamos que este film tiene su… peculiaridad.

Trama

Desde Longlegs (2024) Osgood Perkins se ha convertido en uno de mis directores con más alta estima de mi parte. No solo su particularidad narrativa me parece muy buena y entretenida, sino su forma de encuadrar cada evento dejando ver perfectamente cada emoción y transparencia dentro de este plano. La fotografía de The Monkey, es muy similar a la del anterior trabajo del director, es una cualidad bastante notoria; digamos, marca personal. Si no hay mucha similitud entre ambas obras salvo en la manera en cómo se desarrollan los fotogramas.

Otra cosa que me llamaba la atención de esta película, es que es una obra basada en un cuento de Stephen King. Desde luego, sabemos que King, es uno de los escritores de terror más emblemáticos de Estados Unidos, y las películas y series basadas en sus cuentos y novelas, son tan populares como sus obras originales, pero esto no quiere decir que todas tengan una calificación alta desde la perspectiva de la crítica, todo depende del buen ojo del director que aborda la obra, el cual, no solo debe ofrecer una adaptación decente, sino también darle su estilo personal.

Creo que Perkins hizo un gran trabajo en ambas cosas. Algo que me impactó fue el oscuro y ácido humor que se maneja en toda la película; esa combinación de gore y comedia tan particular me hizo sacar varias risas; especialmente en las muertes más absurdas, donde te quedas levantando las cejas y con el rostro entumecido. No sabía si reírme o asquearme, (bueno, mecánicamente hice ambas cosas), pero lo cierto es que, disfruté cada acto.

Hay tanta sangre como humor negro en cada espectáculo de muerte, y se agradece mucho por eso, sin dejar la sátira de lado para aquellos inteligentes humoristas que puedan entender las referencias ante sus ojos. Lo único que creo que no me funcionó con esta película es la exageración con lo absurdo. Había partes buenas, que estaban bien encajadas, como otras que me provocaron mucha incredulidad; sobre todo en la personalidad de los personajes. Lo oscuro, lo ficticio y la antipatía se lo llevaron todo, dejándonos solo con el sadismo, el sarcasmo, la ironía y un montón de muertes que parecen sacadas de Final Destination. Hay un extremo que simplemente no me terminó de convencer.

Conclusiones

The Monkey de Osgood Perkins, puede ser una muy buena opción para los amantes del gore y la comedia, pero si eres de esas personas que te hostigan los extremos, pues debes irte con cuidado con este film. Su fotografía, su historia, su humor y sus planos narrativos mordaces la hacen una opción muy entretenida para ver. En efecto, no era lo que yo esperaba, pero no me ha decepcionado. No la sentí forzada en ningún momento en cuanto a las escenas gore, pero fueron más que suficiente hasta el hartazgo. La recomiendo fervientemente y es una muy buena opción para el repertorio de cine de terror que dando diferentes pasos.
