My opinion about Beau is Afraid (2023)

First of all, before I start this review, I would like to show my happiness to be back in the Movies & TV Shows community, I haven't been feeling well lately and that has made me move away from Hive quite a bit. Writing is something I've always been passionate about and I don't want to leave it because of personal problems that, in this case, I'm not going to mention since this post is not about that; maybe better for another occasion.
Well, mentioned that today we are going to talk about the third and last film of one of my favorite film directors: Ari Aster, who has already impressed us previously with his first masterpiece "Hereditary" which was endorsed by the critics and named the best horror film of 2018.
Then, our famed director returns with his second installment for the year 2019: "Midsommar", which caused a great impact and proved that horror does not only happen at night but also during the day, and with which we also have a great performance by Florence Pugh.
Now, after several years, Aster returns with his third work: "Beau Is Afraid" which I think is one of the most shocking of the three. Plagued with scenes that will leave you dazed, confused, uncomfortable, with a lot of suspense and anxiety, and where you will not understand what is happening around you and that will provoke an ascending fear.
I invite you to read my opinion about this disturbing movie, which was hard to digest after watching it.

En primer lugar, antes de comenzar esta reseña, quisiera demostrar mi felicidad de volver a la comunidad Movies & TV Shows, no me he sentido bien últimamente y eso ha hecho que me aparte bastante de Hive. La escritura es algo que siempre me ha apasionado y no quiero dejarla por problemas personales que, en este caso no voy a mencionar ya que este post no se trata de eso; quizás mejor para otra ocasión.
Bien, mencionado eso, hoy vamos a hablar de la tercera y última película de uno de mis directores favoritos de cine: Ari Aster, quien ya nos ha impresionado anteriormente con su primera obra maestra “Hereditary” la cual fue avalada por la crítica y nombrada la mejor película de terror del año 2018.
Luego, nuestro afamado director vuelve con su segunda entrega para el año 2019: “Midsommar”, la cual causó un gran impacto y demostró que el terror no solo ocurre de noche sino también durante el día, y con la que también contamos con una gran actuación de Florence Pugh.
Ahora, después de varios años, Aster regresa con su tercera obra: “Beau Is Afraid” la cual me parece que es una de las más impactantes de las tres. Plagada de escenas que te dejarán aturdido, confundido, incómodo, con mucho suspenso y ansiedad, y en donde no comprenderás lo que sucede a tu alrededor y eso te provocará un ascendente miedo.
Te invito a leer mi opinión sobre esta película tan perturbadora, la cual me costó digerir después de verla.

The cast includes Joaquin Phoenix, Parker Posey, Armen Nahapetian, Patti LuPone, Kylie Rogers, Amy Ryan, Zoe Lister-Jones, and Nathan Lane, highlighting Phoenix in his leading role as Beau, and also Zoe Lister-Jones as Beau's mother, both of whom I thought were sublime in their roles with well-structured characters.
Now, what is this film about?
The movie is about a man named Beau, who is a disturbed person, with anxiety issues and a disorder that seems to prevent him from facing the problems of the world. As the film begins, we see Beau receiving therapy from a man who prescribes some very strange drugs (supposedly to calm his anxiety), then he leaves the building and we notice a chaotic world where there is violence, despair, corpses littering the streets, rampant destitution and sequential insanity; as if we were witnessing a post-apocalyptic environment of extreme proportions. At this point, a series of things happen that will make our hearts want to jump out of our chests. Then, Beau receives the news that his mother died in a very violent way, and from there we will see how he tries to get to her funeral.
El elenco actoral de la película está conformado por Joaquin Phoenix, Parker Posey, Armen Nahapetian, Patti LuPone, Kylie Rogers, Amy Ryan, Zoe Lister-Jones y Nathan Lane, destacando Phoenix en su papel protagónico como Beau, y también Zoe Lister-Jones como la madre de Beau, ambos me parecieron sublimes a la hora de destacarse en sus papeles con personajes bien estructurados.
Ahora bien, ¿de qué trata esta película?
El filme trata sobre un hombre llamado Beau, quien es una persona perturbada, con problemas de ansiedad y un trastorno que parece que le impide enfrentar los problemas del mundo. Al comenzar la película, vemos que Beau recibe terapia de un hombre que le receta unos medicamentos muy extraños (supuestamente para calmar su ansiedad), luego sale del edificio y notamos un mundo caótico donde hay violencia, desesperación, cadáveres tirados por las calles, indigencia desenfrenada y demencia secuencial; como si estuviéramos presenciando un ambiente post-apocalíptico de proporciones extremas. En este punto suceden una serie de cosas que harán nuestros corazones quieran salirse de nuestro pecho. Luego, Beau recibe la noticia de que su madre murió de una manera muy violenta y a partir de allí veremos como trata de llegar a su funeral.
These first scenes impressed me, and later on, it got much worse. Aster is an expert at playing with the viewer's mind. He uses a lot of symbolism and philosophical nuances to give us insight into the structure and personalities of the characters. I had to do a bit of research and pay close attention to detail to realize that everything seemed exclusively set up to disturb the main protagonist. But to what end and for what purpose? More on that later.
As I watched each scene of the first act I felt a strong anxiety that crescendos until my heart felt like bursting. I loved the camera angles; something particular to Aster's films so that we don't miss any detail. I felt the force of that hostile, terrible, miserable world; I had put myself in Beau's shoes, I even went so far as to think he wouldn't survive.
This movie is not for sensitive minds, it is better to be prepared before watching it or it may cause you strong anxiety. After finishing the first act of the movie, I felt that all the lights in my mind went out, and then the second act starts where things don't seem to get better for our poor protagonist either.
Estas primeras escenas me impresionaron mucho, y más adelante se puso mucho peor. Aster, es un experto jugando con la mente del espectador. Utiliza mucho el simbolismo y matices filosóficos para darnos a conocer la estructura y la personalidad de los personajes. Tuve que investigar un poco y poner mucha atención en los detalles para darme cuenta que todo parecía exclusivamente preparado para perturbar al protagonista principal. Pero, ¿para qué? ¿Con qué objetivo? Más adelante hablaremos de eso.
A medida que iba viendo cada escena del primer acto sentí una fuerte ansiedad que va en crescendo hasta que mi corazón se sintió con ganas de estallar. Los ángulos de cámara me encantaron; algo particular en las películas de Aster para que no perdamos ningún detalle. Sentí la fuerza de ese mundo hostil, terrible y miserable; me había puesto en los zapatos de Beau, incluso llegué a pensar que no sobreviviría.
Definitivamente esta película no es acta para mentes sensibles, es mejor estar preparado antes de verla o te puede causar una fuerte ansiedad. Después de terminar el primer acto de la película, sentí que todas las luces en mi mente se apagaron, y luego inicia el segundo acto donde las cosas tampoco parece que mejoran para nuestro pobre protagonista.
The following acts begin with scenes of serenity and then become strange and terrifying. It all boils down to the journey of the main character to get to his mother's funeral, however, it seems to me that the third act of the film was very important, since here we are told metaphorically the origin of Beau's father.
In the fourth act, the truth is revealed to us, but you have to watch it all in great detail. At first, I thought it was all happening in Beau's mind; that it was all an illusion caused by his anxiety problems, chronic depression, and heavy medication he was taking, but the director plays perfectly with all this to hit us in the face and tell us, "Nothing to see, this is all real."
I felt more anxiety, as for me the truth was worse than the lie, and, realizing that it was all planned by Beau's mother, I didn't know what to think at the time.
Again, Aster touches on the theme of motherhood; in this case, as an insane pathological ingraining, which is used as the worst horror you have ever experienced in your life. Mona, Beau's mother, dedicated herself to making her son's life miserable. Making him feel guilty every chance she got, creating a multi-million dollar enterprise where thousands of people participated in Mona's madness. I know, it sounds very scary.
I later realized that Mona was abandoned by Beau's father; perhaps leaving her for another woman, but that part was not clear to me. This pain of abandonment she focused on her only son, as she felt he would one day abandon her as his father did.
The feeling of guilt was growing in poor Beau, throwing him to his end as in a Greek tragedy. The symbolism is very well done; this reminds me of "Borderline Personality Disorder" but multiplied by a thousand to create a company just to kill your son with guilt.
Los actos siguientes comienzan con escenas de serenidad, para luego pasar a ser extraños y terroríficos. Todo se resume a una travesía del personaje principal para llegar al funeral de su madre, sin embargo, me parece que el tercer acto de la película fue muy importante, ya que aquí nos cuenta de manera metafórica el origen del padre de Beau.
En el cuarto acto se nos revela la verdad, pero hay que verlo todo con mucho detalle. Al principio, pensaba que todo sucedía en la mente de Beau; que todo era una ilusión causada por sus problemas de ansiedad, depresión crónica y fuertes medicamentos que tomaba, pero el director juega perfectamente con todo esto para golpearnos en la cara y decirnos: “Nada que ver, todo esto es real.”
Sentí más ansiedad, ya que para mí la verdad fue peor que la mentira y, al darme cuenta que todo estuvo planificado por la madre de Beau, no supe que pensar en ese momento.
Nuevamente, Aster toca el tema de la maternidad; en este caso, como arraigo patológico demencial, que es usado como el peor horror que hayas experimentado en tu vida. Mona, la madre de Beau, se dedicó a hacerle la vida miserable a su hijo. Haciéndolo sentir culpable cada vez que podía, creando una empresa multimillonaria donde miles de personas participaron en la locura de Mona. Lo sé, suena muy aterrador.
Después comprendí que Mona, fue abandonada por el padre de Beau; quizás dejándola por otra mujer, esa parte no me quedó clara. Este dolor de abandono lo enfocó en su único hijo, ya que sentía que él algún día la abandonaría como lo hizo su padre.
El sentimiento de culpa fue creciendo en el pobre Beau, lanzándole a su fin como en una tragedia griega. De verdad que el simbolismo está muy bien hecho; esto me recuerda “Al trastorno límite de la personalidad” pero multiplicado por mil como para crear una empresa solo para matar a tu propio hijo con la culpa.
As I've said before, I think it's one of Ari Aster's most disturbing films; I don't know how to describe it. It has more symbolism, drama, suspense, angst, and tension than I can take in. Not a film for all audiences, like Hereditary or Midsommar is, this one has a pervasive force that will drive you crazy trying to figure out what's going on. It also doesn't help that it's such a long film; I'm one of those people who get tired of watching a three-hour movie, but being a work by Aster, I didn't miss any detail, and even though the anxiety, tension and my doubts to understand everything I was watching were winning me over, I enjoyed every profitable moment as I'm sure that was the director's goal.
Como he dicho antes, pienso que es una de las películas más perturbadoras de Ari Aster; de verdad no sé como describirla. Tiene más simbolismo, drama, suspenso, angustia y tensión del que pueda asimilar. No es una película para todo público, como lo es Hereditary o Midsommar, esta tiene una fuerza penetrante que te volverá loco tratando de entender lo que está pasando. Tampoco ayuda mucho que sea una película tan larga; soy de esas personas que se cansan al ver una película de tres horas, pero al ser una obra de Aster, no perdí ningún detalle, y aunque la ansiedad, la tensión y mis dudas por entender todo lo que estaba viendo me ganaban, disfruté cada momento provechoso ya que estoy seguro que ese fue el objetivo del director.
Hola @universoperdido Excelente reseña, vi la película y me gusto mucho, sentí la ansiedad, el miedo de Beau, me provoco un poco de compasión, me pareció interesante el saber como funciona la mente de una persona paranoica, pienso que el medicamento en vez de ayudarlo lo altero mas.
