Those About to Die – The Bloody Spectacle of Ancient Rome
First of all, i can say that i love movies that explore stories inspired by the ancient history of human civilization. These movies transport us to ancient times, where we can discover the fascinating cultures and traditions of ancient civilizations. From the gladiator fights of ancient Rome to the political intrigues of ancient Greece, these stories offer us a captivating look at the past. They allow us to better understand the evolution of human society and appreciate the achievements and challenges that our ancestors faced. In addition, these movies are often full of action, drama and adventure, which makes them even more appealing.
- Those About to Die (2024) is a captivating series that explores the spectacular, complex and corrupt world of gladiatorial sports in ancient Rome. Created by Roland Emmerich and Marco Kreuzpaintner, the series is inspired by the 1958 book of the same name by historian Daniel P. Mannix
Ancient history has always been an endless source of inspiration for grandiose stories. It’s fascinating how bygone eras can be brought to life on screen, offering us a window into a time when honor, power, and blood were the currency of existence. “Those About to Die” is more than a gladiator series – it’s a total immersion into a decadent era where life and death were the ultimate spectacle.
A foray into Rome in 79 AD with a fascinating cast of characters, some of whom are quite complex.
Directed by Roland Emmerich, known for his passion for grandiose cinematic spectacles, Those About to Die takes us to a Rome that is as splendid as it is corrupt. The year is 79 AD, a pivotal moment in the empire’s history, marked by opulence, political intrigue, and simmering conflict.
Far from the idealized image of Rome, the series offers a brutally honest look at what it was like to live—or survive—in a world ruled by greed and cruelty. Here, gladiatorial sports are not just entertainment; they are a reflection of society as a whole, a microcosm where social status, political power, and bloodlust intersect in a grand and terrifying spectacle.
What makes Those About to Die shine is the diversity and depth of its characters. At the helm of this show is Anthony Hopkins, in a magnetic performance as Emperor Vespasian. With a commanding presence and a voice that resonates in your soul, Hopkins brings to life a calculating leader caught between personal ambition and the need to control a population hungry for entertainment and violence.
Alongside him, Iwan Rheon (known for his iconic role in “Game of Thrones”) plays Tenax, a crime boss who skillfully navigates the pitfalls of a declining empire. Tenax is the character you love to hate – charismatic, cunning and ruthless, symbolizing the dark side of Rome.
Beyond them, the story introduces us to a gallery of characters from all corners of Roman society: gladiators fighting not only for survival, but also for a shred of freedom; politicians plotting behind closed doors; and spectators who, from the stands, earn their right to the spectacle with every cheer or boo.
On the surface, Those About to Die seems to be a series about fighting and blood, but its real strength lies in exploring the mechanisms behind the spectacle. What does it mean to be a gladiator? How is this system built and maintained that consumes lives for the pleasure of the masses?
The series manages to answer these questions through intelligent and well-structured storytelling. Gladiators are not just fighters; they are pawns in a larger game, where politics, business and entertainment intertwine. It is a story about manipulation, about sacrifice and about the power of the crowd.
- The script also addresses the theme of freedom – what does it mean to be free in a world that turns people into commodities? Gladiators are presented as tragic heroes, caught in a system that glorifies and destroys them at the same time.
Ancient Rome comes to life in a stunning way, thanks to an impressive production. The sets are luxurious, with details that capture the opulence and misery of the empire. The gladiatorial arenas are monumental, and the fights are choreographed with almost poetic precision, each movement a mixture of art and brutality.
The costumes add a touch of authenticity, reflecting the social and cultural differences of the characters. From the elaborate armor of the gladiators to the imposing toga of the emperor, every element contributes to the viewer's immersion.
Why do i recommend watching this series, which has the epic title Those About to Die?
Well, ......because it will offer you not only spectacular fights and captivating intrigues, but also a reflection on society and human nature. It is a series that combines action with drama, the spectacular with depth, offering you an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Overall, if you are passionate about ancient history, complex stories and well-defined characters, this series is a "must-watch". It is more than just a show about gladiators; it is a deep exploration of a fascinating and dark world.
Although anchored in ancient history, Those About to Die has a lot to say about the contemporary world. The thirst for entertainment, the exploitation of the vulnerable and the corruption of the elite are themes that resonate deeply with today's realities.
The series raises important questions about human nature and how little some things have changed over the centuries. It's impossible not to wonder: if we had been in the Romans' shoes, would we have been different?
In short, i can say with my hand on my heart that it is a grandiose and brutal spectacle that will take your breath away - a superb story about the struggle for survival, power and identity in a world where every choice can mean life or death.
I love the theme of the movie,

Hello, Since I saw the movie Ben-Hur starring Charlton Heston, I became a fan and follower of these Roman stories. If you haven't seen Gladiator 2, I recommend it. With it, the only thing I miss is that it stars Mr. Anthony Hopkins in capital letters, which is a sign that it has a good plot. Greetings
Greetings @rafamar thank you for stopping on my review. I saw Gladiator 2, and while it wasn't exactly what i expected, i loved it......not so much, compared to other types of cinematographic creations that have the Roman Empire and gladiator fights as their theme. Overall, from my point of view, the film managed to capture the essence of the original, while bringing new and exciting elements. The actors' performances were good, and the script keeping me interested throughout. While the series, Those About to Die manages to exceed expectations through the complexity of the characters and the captivating plots..... it's much more addictive than Gladiator 2. Overall, the series offers a new and deep perspective on the world of gladiators, offering a richer and more detailed experience.
Hello, You made me curious, I'll put it on my list of pending movies. Greetings
