Varee, ¡no vuelvas a casa!

Uno siempre vuelve a donde fue feliz, en mi caso siempre vuelvo a las películas/series de terror, en estos días viendo "Re/Member" y ahora con "Don't Come Home".

El catálogo de Netflix nos ofrece un contenido cada vez más diverso en cuanto a producciones asiáticas, "Don't Come Home" es una prueba de ello, la serie tailandesa que se estrenó en octubre del año pasado que cuenta con 6 capítulos y es autoconclusiva, juega con la paranoia, el miedo a lo desconocido y la oscura conexión entre el pasado y el presente de una familia marcada por el misterio.

La historia gira en torno (muy literalmente, si vieron la serie o se animan a verla, sabrán por qué lo digo) a una mujer llamada Varee, quien junto a su pequeña hija Min, regresa a una vieja mansión familiar buscando un refugio tras huir de una relación abusiva. Sin embargo, en lugar de encontrar paz, su llegada a la mansión desata una serie de eventos a primera mano "inexplicables" que arrastran a los personajes a un laberinto de secretos, traumas y entidades sobrenaturales que parecen tener cuentas pendientes. La premisa puede parecer familiar para algunos amantes del género, pero "Don't Come Home" logra crear un aire fresco a través de su enfoque narrativo y su impecable ambientación.

Desde el primer episodio nada es lo que parece, la serie tiene unos cuantos plot twist e invita al cerebro del espectador a maquinar. Considero que no hay grandes sustos ni efectos exagerados, en su lugar, la historia se apoya en una atmósfera densa y un ritmo pausado que va tejiendo la tensión poco a poco. La mansión, con su diseño clásico y su aire de abandono, se convierte en un personaje más dentro de la historia. Los encuadres cerrados, la iluminación tenue y los colores apagados contribuyen a esa sensación de encierro y desesperanza que se va apoderando de los personajes.

En cuanto al elenco, debo decir que me gusto mucho la actuación de todos, sobre todo la de la actriz que hace de "Varee" adulta y quien sería su mamá, "Panida"(interesante en el contexto de la serie), las dos logran transmitir la desesperación de una mujer en crisis que no puede escapar de un pasado tormentoso. La relación de estas dos mujeres con la pequeña Min, es el corazón emocional de la serie y, su evolución a lo largo de los episodios añade una capa extra de dramatismo al relato.

Ahora, si bien la serie tiene una dirección sólida y una historia intrigante, algunos giros argumentales pueden sentirse predecibles para los más experimentados en el género, pero para quienes no, sé que sus cabezas quedaran girando en forma de espiral 😉. La serie juega con el tiempo (esta temática me persigue últimamente), pasado/presente/futuro están entrelazados de una manera en que tal vez diversas líneas o universos chocan, pero, ¿es así? 👀

Otro punto que podría dividir opiniones es el final de la serie, sin entrar en spoilers, el desenlace deja unas cuantas preguntas abiertas, lo que puede resultar frustrante para aquellos que buscan respuestas concretas. No obstante, este tipo de cierre ambiguo también puede interpretarse como un acierto, ya que permite la creación de varias teorías que pueden terminar de darle sentido a la serie (para mí encajo todo, pude razonar de tal manera en que nunca falto el sentido).

Don't Come Home termino resultándome más una serie de drama con toques de misterio y terror, más que de terror, les confieso que incluso solté unas lágrimas con el final, sentí una especia de tristeza nostálgica por el destino de la protagonista y, la manera que se toca también el tema del abuso contra las mujeres, invita a la reflexión. Puedo decir que de verdad me gusto bastante la serie, la recomiendo a todos aquellos que gustan del terror psicológico, misterio, plot twists, tramas que vuelan la cabeza y que juegan con el tiempo tal y como lo conocemos.

One always goes back to where one was happy, in my case I always go back to horror movies/series, these days watching "Re/Member" and now with “Don't Come Home”.

Netflix catalog offers us an increasingly diverse content in terms of Asian productions, “Don't Come Home” is a proof of that, the Thai series that premiered in October last year that has 6 chapters and is self-conclusive, plays with paranoia, fear of the unknown and the dark connection between the past and present of a family marked by mystery.

The story revolves around (quite literally, if you saw the series or are encouraged to watch it, you'll know why I say that) a woman named Varee, who along with her young daughter Min, returns to an old family mansion seeking refuge after fleeing an abusive relationship. However, instead of finding peace, her arrival at the mansion unleashes a series of “unexplainable” first-hand events that drag the characters into a labyrinth of secrets, traumas and supernatural entities that seem to have scores to settle. The premise may seem familiar to some genre fans, but “Don't Come Home” manages to create a fresh air through its narrative approach and impeccable setting.

From the first episode nothing is what it seems, the series has a few plot twists and invites the viewer's brain to think. I consider that there are no big scares or exaggerated effects, instead, the story relies on a dense atmosphere and a leisurely pace that weaves the tension little by little. The mansion, with its classic design and air of abandonment, becomes another character in the story. The tight framing, dim lighting and muted colors contribute to that sense of confinement and hopelessness that takes hold of the characters.

As for the cast, I must say that I really liked everyone's performance, especially the one of the actress who plays the adult “Varee” and the one who plays her mother, “Panida” (interesting in the context of the series), both manage to convey the desperation of a woman in crisis who cannot escape from a stormy past. The relationship of these two women with little Min is the emotional heart of the series, and their evolution throughout the episodes adds an extra layer of drama to the story.

Now, while the series has solid direction and an intriguing story, some plot twists may feel predictable to those more experienced in the genre, but for those who aren't, I know their heads will be left spinning in a spiral 😉. The series plays with time (this theme follows me lately), past/present/future are intertwined in a way where perhaps various lines or universes collide, but is it? 👀

Another point that could divide opinions is the ending of the series, without going into spoilers, the outcome leaves a few open questions, which can be frustrating for those looking for concrete answers. However, this kind of ambiguous closure can also be interpreted as a success, as it allows the creation of several theories that can end up making sense of the series (for me it all fit together, I could reason in such a way that it never failed to make sense).

Don't Come Home ended up being more of a drama series with touches of mystery and horror, more than horror, I confess that I even let out a few tears with the end, I felt a kind of nostalgic sadness for the fate of the protagonist and the way it also touches the theme of abuse against women, invites reflection. I can say that I really liked the series, I recommend it to all those who like psychological horror, mystery, plot twists, plots that blow your mind and play with time as we know it.
