Las chicas de Chapel Croft o "The burning girls" es una miniserie de Paramount + (servicio de streaming que comencé a pagar hace poco) del género de misterio y drama que gira en torno a la reverenda Brooks, su hija Florece y un pueblo de mala muerte en donde suceden cosas extrañas, parece ser que todos tienen algo que ocultar (de mis clichés de misterio favoritos). La serie está basada en un libro del mismo nombre del escritor C.J Tudor, libro que no he leído, pero que tal vez lea ahora por mera curiosidad.

Di con esta serie husmeando el catálogo de Paramount, solo consta de seis capítulos, lo que la hace práctica de ver y la verdad es que no es mala, no es una superproducción o una historia nunca antes vista en el genero, pero el misterio siempre está presente, hay muchas incógnitas por resolver y uno que otro plot twist bueno, hubo cosas en la trama que no vi venir o me confundieron.

La serie inicia con la reverenda Jack Brooks mudándose junto a su hija al pueblo de Chapel Croft con la esperanza de un nuevo comienzo. El pasado de Jack la atormenta, vivió un acontecimiento injusto que la marco y ve el mudarse como una oportunidad, pero la razón de ser "enviada" a Chapel Croft no es la mejor, el anterior reverendo había muerto de una manera inesperada, perturbadora y que dejo a algunos habitantes con dudas de que paso realmente... Poco a poco la reverenda ira dándose cuenta de que el pueblo guarda muchos secretos, algunas de sus costumbres son extrañas, su historia está construida en la muerte de gente inocente y la mayoría de quienes hacen vida ahí actualmente, no son realmente como se muestran, pero siendo claros, la personalidad de la reverenda es fuerte, ella no es una reverenda común, por lo que no tendrá miedo llegar al fondo del asunto mientras vela por su hija al mismo tiempo.

Las chicas de Chapel Croft tiene personajes negros y grises, ninguno me pareció digno de ser catalogado como "bueno" o "muy bien comportado", todos tenían algo ominoso en ellos. Otra cosa que también me resulto gris fueron las actuaciones en general, muchos lo hicieron muy bien, sobre todo la actriz Samantha Morton, que es quien da vida a la reverenda, pero otros siento que podían haber hecho un trabajo mejor o quién sabe, tal vez no es la manera en la que actuaron, sino que su aspecto me parecía que no encajaba con la estética y atmosfera de la historia (vintage, lúgubre, gótica), se veían fuera de lugar, esa fue mi impresión.

Siguiendo con los personajes, hay unos cuantos, todos son de alguna forma parte del rompecabezas, pero debo decir que muchas veces me sentí desencajada porque no sabía exactamente cuál era la razón de un personaje para estar en la historia, la manera en que los hacían aparecer no me encajaba, creo que se podría haber realizado un mejor trabajo en como se contaba la historia, ya que es de esas que muestran el pasado y el presente; lo bueno es que al final todos los cabos se atan, nada queda en el aire y de alguna manera termina funcionando, algunas cosas me las imaginaba, otras no, doy puntos por eso. ¿Mi personaje favorito?, la reverenda, ¿quiénes no me gustaron mucho?, su hija, pero porque me desespero y Rosie, la hija mayor de la familia más influyente del pueblo, no fui muy fan de la actuación de la actriz más el personaje era repelente.

Esta serie es disfrutable, dentro de todo me termino gustando, es una serie que puedes ver tranquilamente en un solo día por puro entretenimiento y terminar intentando resolver los misterios junto con la protagonista. Yo la recomiendo casualmente para quienes gusten del género, pero quiero aclarar que toca temas religiosos, ya saben, el lado oscuro de la iglesia o mejor dicho, de algunos esperpentos que dicen ser seguidores de Dios, pero están es consumidos por la oscuridad y lo quieren ocultar supuestamente sirviendo a los demás en estos lugares (creo en Dios y me gustan las iglesias, pero ya saben como es todo a veces...).

Chicas muertas, asuntos pendientes, dobles vidas, gente trastornada y mucho misterio es lo que encontraras en Las chicas de Chapel Croft, ¿te animas a verla?

The burning girls is a miniseries from Paramount + (streaming service I recently started paying for) of the mystery/drama genre that revolves around Reverend Brooks, her daughter Florece and a sketchy town where strange things happen, everyone seems to have something to hide (one of my favorite mystery clichés). The series is based on a book of the same name by writer C.J Tudor, a book I haven't read, but may read now out of pure curiosity.

I found this series by looking through the Paramount catalog, it only has six chapters, which makes it convenient to watch and the truth is that it's not bad, it is not a blockbuster or a story never seen before in the genre, but the mystery is always present, there are many unknowns to solve and one or another good plot twist, there were things in the story that I didn't see coming or that confused me.

The series starts with Reverend Jack Brooks moving with her daughter to the town of Chapel Croft with the hope of a new beginning. Jack's past haunts her, she lived an unfair event that scarred her and sees moving as an opportunity, but the reason for being "sent" to Chapel Croft is not the best, the previous reverend died in an unexpected and disturbing way that left some residents with doubts about what really happened... Little by little the reverend will realize that the town keeps many secrets, some of its traditions are strange, its history is built on the death of innocent people and most of those who live there currently, are not really as they appear, but to be clear, the reverend's personality is strong, she is not a common reverend, so she will not be afraid to get to the bottom of the matter while watching over her daughter at the same time.

The burning girls has black and gray characters, none of them seemed to me worthy of being categorized as "good" or "very well behaved", they all had something ominous about them. Another thing that I also found gray were the performances in general, many did very well, especially the actress Samantha Morton, who brings the reverend to life, but others I feel they could have done a better job or who knows, maybe it's not the way they acted, but their appearance seemed to me that it didn't fit with the aesthetics and atmosphere of the story (vintage, gloomy, gothic), they looked out of place, that was my impression.

Continuing with the characters, there are a few, all of them are somehow part of the puzzle, but I must say that many times I felt disconnected because I did not know exactly what was the reason for a character to be in the story, the way that they were presented did not click for me, I think a better job could have been done in how the story was told, since it's one of those that show the past and the present; The good thing is that eventually all the loose ends are tied up, nothing is left in the air and somehow ends up working, some things I imagined, others I didn't, I give points for that. My favorite character?, the Reverend, who I didn't like much?, her daughter, but because she frustrates me and Rosie, the eldest daughter of the most influential family in town, I wasn't a big fan of the actress' performance plus the character was repellent.

This series is enjoyable, I ended up liking it, it's a series that you can watch quietly in one day for pure entertainment and end up trying to solve the mysteries along with the protagonist. I casually recommend it for those who like the genre, but I want to mention that it touches on religious topics, you know, the dark side of the church or better said, of some of the creeps who claim to be followers of God, but are consumed by darkness and want to hide it supposedly serving others in these places (I believe in God and I like churches, but you know how it is sometimes...).

Dead girls, unfinished business, double lives, disturbed people and a lot of mystery is what you will find in The burning girls, do you feel like watching it?
