No es lo que esperaba, pero no estuvo mal.

La película Re/Member es una película de horror japonesa que se estrenó en Netflix en el año 2022, pero yo la encontré hace dos días. Descubrí que era una adaptación de un manga de terror que no he leído llamado "Karada Sagashi" y bueno, la historia mezcla elementos de horror sobrenatural con un concepto de bucle temporal, lo que a primeras llama bastante la atención.

Podemos decir que hay varios personajes principales, pero Asuka es nuestra chica centro. La ya mencionada, solitaria y sin amigos, en un acontecimiento sobrenatural de la vida, queda atrapada en un bucle de horror junto a un grupo de compañeros de clase. Un día cualquiera (o no tanto), todo cambio y todas las noches son transportados a su escuela y perseguidos por una entidad a la que conocen como "la persona roja". La única forma que tienen de escapar de aquel bucle de la desgracia, es buscar y reunir las partes del cuerpo desmembrado de niña que fue asesinada, lo que les permite avanzar hacia una posible liberación. Si no lo logran, mueren (¿Indefinidamente?) para despertar al día siguiente y en la noche caer en el mismo purgatorio.

La idea del bucle temporal, pienso que es el gancho principal de la película, se juega con la repetición de eventos y la desesperación creciente de los personajes (me recuerda a varias películas y series que me gustan), no obstante, al avanzar la historia, se hace evidente que el horror no es lo único que abunda en la película, enseñanzas acerca de la amistad y la soledad están presentes, convirtiendo a la historia a una emotiva.

El ritmo de la película es bastante dinámico, ya que combina secuencias de terror con momentos de investigación y desarrollo de personajes. A mí a veces me resulto un poco extraño, siento que tal vez algunas cosas se cortaban de forma poco sutil, incluso pensé que la película, en esa forma en que la hicieron, quedaba mejor como una pequeña serie, no sé, había algo poco natural en la manera en que se presentaron algunas cosas.

El elenco de actores ofrece interpretaciones convincentes, bastante pintoresco, aunque yo que crecí viendo anime, leo manga y me he visto montones de películas asiáticas, note los estereotipos comunes en las historias japonesas rápidamente, también el cliché de la "chica final", con Asuka cumpliendo con este rol (oh, pero yo amó una final girl 😍). La interacción entre los personajes es clave para el desarrollo de la historia, todos inevitablemente se van haciendo más cercanos a lo largo de los días que reviven, generando tensión y también momentos emotivos que le dan, como ya mencione, un toque emocional a la historia.

La película se apoya mucho en el suspenso y los jumpscares, lo que puede ser un punto a favor o en contra dependiendo del espectador. Si bien algunas escenas son predecibles, otras logran generar una tensión genuina. Además, el escenario de la escuela vacía durante la noche contribuye a la sensación de peligro constante, debo dar puntos por eso, aun así, la historia me pareció floja, siento que la hubiera disfrutado más en mi adolescencia, pero no estuvo mal.

¿Conclusiones? Re/Member es película entretenida que combina el horror con el suspenso y los elementos de un thriller sobrenatural. Si bien no reinventa el género ni ofrece una historia muy original, su ejecución no está mal. Para los amantes del terror juvenil, esta película es una buena opción. No es ni por asomo una obra maestra del terror, pero cumple con su objetivo de entretener y mantenernos queriendo saber qué pasa al final.

It's not what I expected, but it wasn't bad.

The movie Re/Member is a Japanese horror movie that was released on Netflix in 2022, but I found it two days ago. I found out that it was an adaptation of a horror manga that I haven't read called “Karada Sagashi” and well, the story mixes supernatural horror elements with a time loop concept, which at first calls quite the attention.

We can say that there are several main characters, but Asuka is our center girl. The previously mentioned, lonely and friendless girl, in a supernatural life event, gets caught in a horror loop along with a group of classmates. One random (or not so random) day, everything changes and every night they are transported to their school and haunted by an entity they know as “the red person”. The only way for them to escape from that loop of misfortune is to find and reunite the dismembered body parts of the girl who was murdered, which allows them to move towards a possible liberation. If they do not succeed, they die (indefinitely?) to wake up the next day and at night fall into the same purgatory.

The idea of the time loop, I think is the main hook of the film, it plays with the repetition of events and the growing desperation of the characters (it reminds me of several movies and series that I like), however, as the story progresses, it becomes evident that horror is not the only thing that abounds in the film, teachings about friendship and loneliness are present, making the story an emotional one.

The pace of the film is quite dynamic, as it combines horror sequences with moments of investigation and character development. To me it was a bit strange at times, I feel that maybe some things were cut in a not very subtle way, I even thought that the film, in the way it was made, would be better as a small series, I don't know, there was something unnatural in the way some things were presented.

The cast delivers convincing performances, quite colorful, although I who grew up watching anime, read manga and have seen tons of Asian movies, noticed the common stereotypes in Japanese stories quickly, also the cliche of the “final girl”, with Asuka fulfilling this role (oh, but I loved a final girl 😍). The interaction between the characters is key to the development of the story, all of them inevitably become closer throughout the days they relive, generating tension and also emotional moments that give, as I already mentioned, an emotional touch to the story.

The film relies heavily on suspense and jumpscares, which can be a plus or a minus depending on the viewer. While some scenes are predictable, others manage to generate genuine tension. Also, the setting of the empty school during the night contributes to the feeling of constant danger, I must give points for that, even so, I found the story weak, I feel I would have enjoyed it more in my teenage years, but it wasn't bad.

Conclusions? Re/Member is an entertaining film that combines horror with suspense and the elements of a supernatural thriller. While it doesn't reinvent the genre or offer a very original story, its execution is not bad. For fans of juvenile horror, this film is a good choice. It is by no means a masterpiece of horror, but it accomplishes its goal of entertaining and keeping us wanting to know what happens at the end.
