BENEATH THE FACADE
Stating that this movie is relatable and educative is putting it mildly. I am, however, not pleased at the narrative many will pick from this to justify a common trend in recent times, even in Christendom. This is to the effect of “…taste the goods before purchase” which is in sharp contrast to the biblical injunction enshrined in Heb 13:4 (if you know what I mean).
So here...ABOUT THE MOVIE
Solape (Teniola Aladese) is married to Emma (Eso Dike). Not before long after their wedding ceremony, their marriage began to experience turbulence.
One occasion of a regular couple’s retreat, which includes Inem (Bolaji Ogunmola), her husband Olumide (Val Edochie), and another younger couple seem to have ended with questions in many people’s minds.
There’s trouble in paradise. Many can tell. With things becoming unbearable, Solape takes a drastic step. How would this impact their marriage? Can they resolve their differences?
MY THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS
The camera quality was vivid and crisp. All the actors did amazing. I really can’t get over the sound of Teni’s laughter and giggles in movies…gosh! She has such an effect.
My best performances here are:
Chy Nwakanma who played Solape’s sister as Desola. I love what she does with roles. She seems to have the same aura as Genovevah Umeh. I love how she embodies and interprets her roles. Love what she did here, too.
Elizabeth Udo Ekaette, who played the sisters’ mother! Goodness me! She’s such a natural actress. At some point, it didn’t feel like I was watching a movie as she made it appear so believable. She’s super easy to watch with her sense of humor and relaxed mode even in the face of tension.
The storyline is beautiful. The plot was straightforward, albeit it felt a little slow and somewhat boring even as short as the duration was. I guess this is owing to the back and forth on the frustration seen on Solape.
The hair on Desola didn’t really do it for me!
The highlight for me in this drama is the gaslighting from Inem when Solape did what she did. It is actually quite typical of ‘Church people’ quoting scriptures and choking people with Bible verses when they’re faced with real-life issues in their marriages.
See, there’s no manual for marriages. He who wears the shoes knows where it pinches and where it hurts the most. In as much as the Bible is our guide, we must remain guided enough to look out for oneself, protecting one’s mental health and all. Emotional abuse remains a silent kïller in marriages. Many have dïed whilst they still live. Let God lead and keep us all…Amen.
The ending was kind of predictable but did not take away the fact that this was engaging, interesting, entertaining, and somewhat intriguing. Bolaji did great with her pregnant woman role, too. And oh least I forget, I loved the fact that Val did not play the role of a professional here. Loved how he played husband to Bolaji’s character.
