My neighbor Totoro (1988) | MOVIE REVIEW [ENG-ESP]

Warm greetings dear cinephile friends! 💚🍃✨

For days now in my head I have been thinking about the incredible time I had watching this Studio Ghibli movie, for me it was a completely new experience since I am not used to watch movies or Japanese animation, but just the opportunity to do so was given to my mood. The day I decided to give a chance to this film I was feeling quite down and without energy, at that time I was looking for something to make me feel happy, looking in the Netflix catalog I came across "My neighbor Totoro" an animated film from 1988, the first thing I thought when I read the synopsis was "this is quite rare and interesting" that same feeling of curiosity awakened in me the desire to give play to what today is considered a masterpiece of Japanese animation. I didn't hesitate twice to do so since I had heard before about the renowned productions of this studio and its impact on the Eastern and Western culture, and why not open myself to these worlds full of possibilities to which these beautiful works of fantasy transport you?

There is no doubt that I had mixed feelings from minute 1 to the last, many factors made me feel pleased in many ways, so much so that since that day I wanted to share with this community of moviegoers a small review from a general point of view and without spoilers, encouraging people like me to give it a chance even if they are not familiar with this type of content.

Desde hace días en mi cabeza quedó lo increíble que la pasé viendo esta película de Studio Ghibli, para mí fue una experiencia completamente nueva ya que no acostumbro a ver películas o animación japonesa, pero justo la oportunidad de hacerlo se dio dado a mi estado ánimo. El día en el que me decidí por darle una oportunidad a este film me sentía bastante decaído y sin energía, en ese momento estaba buscando algo que me hiciera sentir alegre, buscando en el catalogo de Netflix me topé con “Mi vecino Totoro” una película animada del año 1988, lo primero que pensé cuando leí la sinopsis fue “esto es bastante raro e interesante” ese mismo sentimiento de curiosidad despertó en mi las ganas de darle play a lo que hoy se considera una obra maestra de la animación japonesa. No dudé dos veces en hacerlo ya que había escuchado antes sobre las reconocidas producciones de este estudio y su impacto en la cultura oriental como en la occidental, y ¿Por qué no abrirme a estos mundos llenos de posibilidades a los que te transportan estas hermosas obras de fantasía?

No cabe duda que tuve sentimientos encontrados desde el minuto 1 hasta el último, muchos factores hicieron que me sintiera complacido de muchas maneras, tanto así que desde ese día quise compartir con esta comunidad de cinéfilos una pequeña reseña desde un punto de vista general y sin spoilers, incentivando a que como yo, le den la oportunidad aunque no estén familiarizados con este tipo de contenido.

My Neighbor Totoro, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, is an adventure experience from start to finish, telling the story of a university professor who moves to a picturesque rural village surrounded by lush and majestic vegetation with his two little daughters to be near his sick wife who is being treated at a local hospital. Satsuki, who is the older sister of 12 years old, is a fearless girl unafraid to discover what the world has to teach her, and Mei, the youngest of the house, is the little four year old who like her sister has an adventurous spirit that will make her discover a hidden world in the forest inhabited by curious creatures that will soon become her friends. The girls and their father are still in the hectic process of getting used to their new home, meanwhile, Mei, eager to discover what is hidden around her, explores the residence meeting two small spirits which she will follow to a strange passage in the forest; passage that will lead her to meet a huge creature that lives there which she will identify as "Totoro".

Mi vecino Totoro, escrita y dirigida por Hayao Miyazaki es una experiencia de aventura de inicio a fin, nos cuenta la historia de un profesor universitario el cual se muda a un pintoresco pueblo rural rodeado de frondosa y majestuosa vegetación junto a sus dos hijitas pequeñas para estar cerca de su esposa enferma la cual está siendo atendida en un hospital de la localidad. Satsuki, quien es la hermana mayor de 12 años, es una niña intrépida sin miedo a descubrir que tiene el mundo para enseñarle, y Mei, la menor de la casa, es la pequeña de cuatro años que al igual que su hermana posee un espíritu aventurero que será el que la hará descubrir un mundo oculto en el bosque en el cual habitan curiosas criaturas que pronto se volverán sus amigas. Las niñas junto a su padre aún están en el ajetreado proceso de acostumbrarse a su nuevo hogar, mientras tanto, Mei, con ansias de descubrir lo que esconde su alrededor, explora la residencia encontrándose con dos pequeños espíritus los cuales seguirá hasta un extraño pasadizo en el bosque; pasadizo que la llevará a conocer a una enorme criatura que allí habita la cual ella identificará como “Totoro”

Throughout the film we see how Mei and her sister become friends with this "guardian of the forest" who will accompany them through a myriad of fun adventures around this cute little town. Totoro will become for them a friend who will always be there to help them in any situation that may arise, this strong bond of friendship will grow stronger between the sisters and the creature who will teach them to take care of their green environment, and to act in the best way when faced with any concern.

A lo largo del film vemos como Mei junto a su hermana se hacen amigas de este “guardián del bosque” que las acompañará a través de un sinfín de divertidas aventuras alrededor de ese lindo pueblito. Totoro se volverá para ellas un amigo que estará siempre para ayudarlas ante cualquier situación que se les presente, ese lazo fuerte de amistad se irá fortaleciendo entre las hermanas y la criatura que les enseñará al cuidar de su verde entorno, y a accionar de la mejor manera ante cualquier preocupación.

If I had to define this film with one word it would be "comfort", everything that gets in the way and what could be considered a problem as the film progresses is resolved in the healthiest of ways, all through beautiful messages of encouragement. I think one of the most remarkable teachings that this production leaves you with would be the importance of nature and how it can help you take refuge and connect with yourself to find freedom, how do we see this represented within the film? We can observe it by noticing the elements that surround Satsuki and Mei, let's remember that they moved to this new place because their mother is sick, and despite the emptiness that her temporary absence may leave them, they are accompanied by their father who is always with them to support them giving them the space to explore, they also have their neighbor and protector Totoro and the beautiful vastness of nature which gave them from the beginning a precious welcome to enjoy it to the fullest.

Si tuviera que definir esta película con una palabra sería “confort”, todo lo que se va interponiendo y lo que podría considerarse como un problema a medida que esta avanza se va resolviendo de las maneras más sanas, todo esto a través de hermosos mensajes de aliento. Creo que una de las enseñanzas más destacables que esta producción te deja sería la de la importancia de la naturaleza y como esta puede ayudar a refugiarte y a conectar contigo mismo para encontrar la libertad, ¿Cómo vemos esto representado dentro de la película? Lo podemos observar dándonos cuenta de los elementos que rodean a Satsuki y a Mei, recordemos que se mudaron a este nuevo lugar debido a que su madre está enferma, y a pesar de el vacío que les pueda dejar su ausencia temporal, están acompañadas de su padre quien está siempre con ellas para apoyarlas dándoles el espacio de explorar, también cuentan con su vecino y protector Totoro y con la hermosa inmensidad de la naturaleza la cual les brindó desde un principio una preciosa acogida para que disfrutaran al máximo de ella.

Personally I loved every second of this movie, for me it was something completely new to find a film that transmitted me the feelings that this one left in me, I think one of the ways in which you can completely fall in love with this film is how through the colorful scenarios they show you in such a vivid way the environment that surrounds the protagonists, it is really shocking how detailed the animation is, the way they managed to captivate the beauty of our nature and how they captured it in drawing is shocking. It is definitely a very pleasant and comforting experience to the eye, the whole setting is so striking and beautiful that it even feels as if you were watching a live action, I can't imagine the intense work that the animators had to go through to make the animation come to life, it was certainly made with a lot of love and that is a factor worth admiring!

En lo personal amé cada segundo de esta película, para mí fue algo completamente nuevo encontrar un filme que me transmitiera los sentimientos que este dejó en mi, creo que una de las maneras en las que te puedes enamorar por completo de esta película es como a través de los coloridos escenarios te van mostrando de una manera tan viva el ambiente que a las protagonistas rodea, es realmente impactante lo detallada que es la animación, la forma en la que lograron cautivar lo bello de nuestra naturaleza y como lo plasmaron en dibujo es shockeante. Definitivamente es una experiencia demasiado agradable y reconfortante a la vista, todo la ambientación es tan llamativa y preciosa que hasta llega a sentirse como si estuvieras viendo un live action, no me imagino el intenso trabajo por el que los animadores tuvieron que pasar para hacer que la animación cobre vida, sin duda fue hecha con mucho y amor y eso es un factor digno de admirar!

My Neighbor Totoro is not for everyone, I consider that to see it you must be open to detach yourself from what we usually consume every time we see an animated film, this production is a feeling of nostalgia and emotion in its maximum splendor, I think I had not found something similar before, for those who are not used to this type of content, I recommend that to enjoy this film to the fullest you must be willing to enter a fantasy world where you will live almost in the flesh this adventure, because thanks to the funny plot, it is very easy to feel inside it. Another remarkable thing about this work of Studio Ghibli is the worldwide impact it had, that although 35 years have passed since its release, it is still an icon in the world of Japanese and international animation, winning many awards and reviews that acclaim it and catalog it as a beautiful masterpiece.

Mi vecino Totoro no es para todos, considero que para verla debes de estar abierto a desprenderte de lo que habitualmente consumimos cada vez que vemos una película animada, esta producción es un sentimiento de nostalgia y emoción en su máximo esplendor, creo que no había encontrado algo similar antes, para aquellos que no acostumbramos este tipo de contenido, se sentirá como un mundo extraño pero a la vez impresionante, recomiendo que para disfrutar al máximo de este film debes de estar dispuesto a adentrarte a un mundo de fantasía en donde vivirás casi que en carne propia esta aventura, ya que gracias a la divertida trama, es muy fácil sentirte dentro de ella. Otra cosa destacable de esta obra del Estudio Ghibli es el impacto mundial que tuvo, que aunque hayan pasado 35 años de su estreno, sigue siendo un icono en el mundo de la animación japonesa e internacional, ganando cantidad de premios y críticas que la aclaman y catalogan como una bella obra maestra.
