Cassandra | When AI takes control of an Intelligent House, and Its Family too! | Series Review [EN/ES]

Más de una vez me pregunté, cómo sería la inteligencia artificial si se hubiese creado en tiempos remotos, como en la ahora lejana década del 70. Si bien estamos hablando de tecnología que podría considerarse anticuada, fue una década en la que se lograron grandes avances con respecto a la lógica de la informática. Posiblemente muchos descubrimientos y desarrollos han sido detenidos por algún asunto en particular, aunque hay quienes dicen que uno ya entraría en el área de la conspiración; pero ese ya es otro tema.

Uno podría preguntarse también, qué desarrollos podrían haber sido interrumpidos, cuáles se han llegado a concretar, qué experimentos y prototipos alguna vez fueron estudiados y llevados a la práctica tras resultados que no eran los esperados. ¿Y si en algún momento la inteligencia artificial pudo haber cobrado consciencia de sí misma? ¿Qué tal si en realidad logró replicar la consciencia de alguien más, teniendo en cuenta la estructura compleja del cerebro humano? Esto es algo que una de las series de Netflix propone, a la que han llamado "Cassandra".

More than once I wondered what artificial intelligence would have been like if it had been created in remote times, such as in the now distant 1970's. Although we are talking about technology that could be considered outdated, it was a decade in which great advances were made with respect to computer logic. Possibly many discoveries and developments have been held back by some particular issue, although there are those who say that one would already enter the area of conspiracy; but that is another topic.

One could also ask oneself, which developments could have been interrupted, which ones have come to fruition, which experiments and prototypes were once studied and put into practice after results that were not as expected. What if at some point artificial intelligence could have become aware of itself? What if it actually managed to replicate someone else's consciousness, taking into account the complex structure of the human brain? This is something that one of the Netflix series proposes, which they have called “Cassandra”.

Esta es una serie alemana ambientada en la actualidad, pero con un recorrido hacia lo que fue el pasado para un mejor contexto e interpretación de la historia. En este sentido, creo que ha sido una buena elección introducirnos a lo que sucedió en el pasado a través de los 6 episodios con los que cuenta la mini serie. Puedo decir que en absolutamente todos se mantiene la misma carga de suspenso sobre qué sucederá más adelante. En mi opinión, se alterna perfectamente los tiempos, haciendo que no sea molesto en absoluto. Es más, lo considero necesario para entender la trama en su totalidad. Aunque en otras series es algo que sí suele molestar, porque no terminan de conectar los tiempos, y uno tiende a "desorientarse", como también no saber quién es quién en la historia.

La trama en sí es muy interesante desde la perspectiva que nos pone casi en una primera persona, pues nos sentimos identificados porque tal vez alguna vez nos hayamos tenido que mudar a una nueva casa, donde encontraríamos rastros de una anterior familia. Esta familia decide mudarse a una casa inteligente de los años 70, pero que está desactivada desde aquellos tiempos, o eso era lo que se pensaba.

Fynn, quien es el hijo más grande de la familia, decide dejarse llevar por su curiosidad aventurándose por la nueva casa. Pero es en el sótano donde encuentra computadoras antiguas y grandes, que si nos remontamos a un punto remoto en la historia, abarcaban prácticamente toda una habitación. Y una gran palanca, que decide accionarla sin resultados aparentes en primera instancia. Juno, la más pequeña de la familia, es alguien que se dejará influenciar mucho por las emociones. Con más sentido luego de explorar la casa y descubrir junto a su hermano que existe una asistente virtual, a la cual se intentará volver a la vida luego de algunos ajustes.

This is a German series set in the present, but with a journey into the past for a better context and interpretation of history. In this sense, I think it has been a good choice to introduce us to what happened in the past through the 6 episodes of the mini series. I can say that in absolutely all of them the same load of suspense about what will happen later is maintained. In my opinion, the timing alternates perfectly, making it not annoying at all. What's more, I consider it necessary to understand the plot as a whole. Although in other series it is something that usually bothers, because they do not end up connecting the times, and one tends to get “disoriented”, as well as not knowing who is who in the story.

The plot itself is very interesting from the perspective that puts us almost in a first person, because we feel identified because we may have had to move to a new house, where we would find traces of a previous family. This family decides to move into a smart house from the 70's, but which is deactivated since those times, or so it was thought.

Fynn, who is the oldest son in the family, decides to let his curiosity get the better of him by venturing into the new house. But it is in the basement where he finds large old computers, which if we go back to a remote point in history, covered practically an entire room. And a large lever, which he decides to operate with no apparent results at first. Juno, the youngest of the family, is someone who will be greatly influenced by emotions. With more sense after exploring the house and discovering with her brother that there is a virtual assistant, which will try to come back to life after some adjustments.

No pasa mucho tiempo cuando Cassandra comienza a aparecer en todas parte de la casa, pero principalmente en su cuerpo de robot. La casa en sí está preparada para que abarque cada rincón, a través de sensores y cámaras que comanda una computadora central. Tal vez Cassandra sea un algoritmo, pero con el paso de los capítulos nos vamos dando cuenta que en realidad personifica a alguien más. Con esto encontramos el verdadero sentido de la trama, y el por qué ve a la familia de Samira como propia, pero siendo ella la madre que desearía ser. Esto hará que Samira sufra las consecuencias de entrometerse en sus relaciones y lazos afectivos, lo que enfurecerá a Cassandra casi al punto de volverse una psicópata; al contrario de Samira, quien tendrá todo el peso en su contra, distanciando y haciéndola ver como una total desquiciada, al punto de colapsar mentalmente.

En este sentido, David es un padre que ama demasiado a sus hijos, pero que también en algún punto, se dejará influenciar por este robot. Absolutamente todos transitan la total desesperación cuando se dan cuenta de la verdad que hay detrás de esta historia. El control que ejercerá Cassandra será absoluto, utilizando los mecanismos inteligentes de la casa para que su nueva familia, no la abandonen.

Las tensiones en esta mini serie son continuas, pero que luego de estar viendo algunos capítulos nos damos cuentas de que no son propias de la falta de humanidad del asistente, sino de un perfil psicológico que se ha distorsionado en algún momento de la historia, en retrospectiva a una trama anterior. Con esto me refiero a que en esta mini serie hay dos historias que contar, como la del presente, con la familia de Samira, y la del origen de todo este calvario, que en algún momento fue una familia definitivamente normal, pero que ha cambiado drásticamente luego de algunos eventos desafortunados.

It is not long before Cassandra begins to appear everywhere in the house, but mainly in her robot body. The house itself is prepared for her to cover every corner, through sensors and cameras commanded by a central computer. Maybe Cassandra is an algorithm, but as the chapters go by we realize that she actually embodies someone else. With this we find the true meaning of the plot, and why she sees Samira's family as her own, but she being the mother she wishes she could be. This will make Samira suffer the consequences of meddling in her relationships and emotional ties, which will infuriate Cassandra almost to the point of becoming a psychopath; unlike Samira, who will have all the weight against her, distancing and making her look like a total unhinged, to the point of collapsing mentally.

In this sense, David is a father who loves his children too much, but also at some point, will be influenced by this robot. Absolutely everyone goes through total despair when they realize the truth behind this story. Cassandra's control will be absolute, using the intelligent mechanisms of the house so that her new family does not abandon her.

The tensions in this mini-series are continuous, but after watching some chapters we realize that they are not due to the lack of humanity of the assistant, but to a psychological profile that has been distorted at some point in the story, in retrospect to a previous plot. By this I mean that in this mini-series there are two stories to tell, such as the present, with Samira's family, and the origin of all this ordeal, which at some point was definitely a normal family, but that has changed drastically after some unfortunate events.

Para evitar spoilers no puedo ahondar mucho más, pero sí puedo decir que Cassandra fue el producto de la prueba y el error, en un laboratorio donde la experimentación trascendía sobre los principios de la humanidad, sin temor a impactar la vida tal como la conocemos.

Esto es algo que veremos más adelante, que sin dudas representa la crudeza de algunos tiempos. También esto se verá reflejado en algunos avances, que salieron mal y otros tuvieron su éxito, el cuál se refleja en el uso de tecnología actual, disponible en hospitales del mundo contemporáneo. Sin dudas, esta mini serie a mi pensar lo tiene todo.

To avoid spoilers I can't go much deeper, but I can say that Cassandra was the product of trial and error, in a laboratory where experimentation transcended the principles of humanity, without fear of impacting life as we know it.

This is something we will see later on, which undoubtedly represents the rawness of some times. This will also be reflected in some advances, which went wrong and others had their success, which is reflected in the use of current technology, available in hospitals of the contemporary world. Undoubtedly, this mini-series to my mind has it all.
