Spoiler warning: The review contains important plot details, so we recommend watching the movie first before reading.

One thing I like to do is give retro movies a chance. It may be that I haven't seen them and I'm missing out on something I might enjoy. Indeed, that was the case after I came across Robinson Crusoe; a movie starring Pierce Brosnan.

From the very first moment I knew I was going to be interested after seeing its trailer. Its plot centers on an adventure in which Robinson Crusoe ends up on an island after being shipwrecked for a few months. A storm rocked the seas, and with it, the ship he was escaping on. It is unfortunate to see it that way, but much more so the root of why he escaped.

In a 1703 Scotland, an argument between friends becomes even more aggressive after asserting that they both loved a woman named Mary. It is then that Crusoe is involved in a duel that he does not want, but bad fortune makes it end in a fatal outcome. This is something that makes him flee, because there are witnesses who saw what happened.

Although he did not have to decide now between friendship or love, he had to start saying goodbye, since the chances of them coming after him were very high. A commercial expedition was a very good pretext to flee and return when things had calmed down. Especially if this trip lasted a year, which was the time he had promised his beloved. However it would not be so simple to make a journey through the fury of the seas. A great storm causes his ship, along with a whole crew to be torn to pieces, and behind the unfortunate thing is the fortune of having survived, swept away by the waves of the sea.

It may seem that being alone on an island is really scary. Indeed it was for this adventurer who didn't let madness overtake him. After going through what was left of the ship, he was able to find supplies and some tools with which to build, with the great surprise that he would find a canine friend hidden in the ship. Eventually he was able to get used to it and make the place his home, at least temporarily.

The wait for help was in vain, as it seemed that no one would get him out of there. And when he least expected it and thought he would die almost alone after settling down indefinitely, he managed to hear the words of some people, although in a language he could not understand. The bad thing about this is that it happened in a context in which he had in front of him a tribe that would not hesitate for an instant to kill him. In it he visualized some people belonging to the tribe that had been given in sacrifice. After a few moments of hesitation, he decided to rescue one of them and managed to escape from those who were chasing them. Bringing a tribesman to his senses seemed to be quite a challenge, but it might be worth it, as he was the only person he could count on and even make a friendship blossom.

From the first moment there was distrust on the part of both. Especially because the tribesman thought that he was coming to subjugate him, or in short, to make him a slave. On the other hand, Crusoe thought that he would betray him and give him as an offering to the tribe, although on many occasions Friday, as he called him, said that he was already dead.

Conflicts over religion caused them to drift apart, but as time went by, they began to feel that there was no point in drifting apart. Especially because they had to survive on an island where they had to cooperate in order to overcome all obstacles. In addition, after a much more affectionate relationship, they began to lose that “master and slave” relationship that was induced by Crusoe, who understood that he had made a serious mistake.

During part of the adventure, they knew that the tribes would come to attack them. Crusoe's experience in the army was exposed when he made all kinds of traps in which those enemies who came for them, fell consecutively. This is possibly one of the most action-packed scenes, with explosions, well-planned traps, and a kind of cooperation between the two that reinforced their commitment to get out alive. However, some injuries make them have to leave the place, being stalked by a huge number of tribes, having to go to a tribe that belonged to Friday.

This would have two points, one bad and one good. On the one hand, knowing that he would survive was a relief. On the other hand, they would not accept a white man because of the barbarities they had done to his people. This leads them to have to fight a duel, putting us back to the beginning of the movie, where one of them had to die.

Chaos succumbs again after the arrival of a tribulation of whites, who have come to free Crusoe, but resulting in a denouement that he did not want to relive. I particularly liked this film in many ways. I consider it a very complete film, which has several moments that stand out for their action, sentimental situations, a sense of discontent for spoiling everything, but its counterpart, satisfaction for repairing that mistake. Undoubtedly I could say that it is a film that we should see, especially if this is one that has to do with offshore travel and adventures on an island that at first seemed deserted, but then you begin to find its dangers.

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe was a book I read last year for school. It was rather impactful and covered various themes. I didn't think there was a movie adaptation, and I would actually love to see that because reading the book was rather cumbersome for me.😅

There are actually several movies adapted from the story created by Daniel Defoe. This movie seemed to me to have all the condiments to enjoy it to the fullest, from beginning to end.

In addition, Pierce Brosnan's performance is a 10/10.
