A quick trip down memory lane before the New Year arrives

From a »Bullitt« to a »Mission Impossible«

Departing from the usual practice of inviting musicians to a Jazz Matinee, on the last day of 2023 I'm going to invite someone whose compositions will be familiar to almost every filmgoer. But who is this man, who adds just the right amount of spice to so many films with his musical contributions? What makes it even more interesting for me, as the organiser of the event, is when the artist brings the element of jazz to the fore.

Abweichend vom üblichen Habitus bei der Einladung an Musiker zur Jazz-Matinee, bitte ich am letzten Tag des Jahres 2023 jemanden auf die Bühne, dessen Kompositionen beinahe jeder Cineast kennen wird. Doch wer ist der Mann, der mit seinen musikalischen Beigaben vielen Filmen erst die richtige Würze verleiht? Was die Sache für mich als Veranstalter noch interessanter gestaltet, wenn der Künstler das Element Jazz dabei in den Vordergrund rückt.

So it is today that we welcome Lalo Schifrin, who was born in Buenos Aires on the 21st of June 1932 and who enjoys a worldwide reputation as a composer, arranger and conductor. The young Argentinian began his musical career, like so many musicians who went on to succeed in genres such as jazz and funk, with classical piano training. As early as 1955, however, he was on stage with bandoneon player Ástor Piazzolla as a representative of his country at the Paris Jazz Festival.

So begrüßen wir heute Lalo Schifrin, der am 21. Juni 1932 in Buenos Aires geboren wurde und als Komponist, Arrangeur und Dirigent weltweite Anerkennung genießt. Wie bei so vielen Musikern, die später in musikalischen Sparten wie Jazz oder Funk Erfolge feiern, begann auch bei dem jungen Argentinier alles mit einer klassischen Klavierausbildung. Doch bereits 1955 vertrat er sein Heimatland zusammen mit dem Bandoneon-Spieler Ástor Piazzolla beim Jazzfestival in Paris.

What followed was probably the best thing that could happen to a young jazz player in those days. Dizzy Gillespie got in touch with Lalo Schifrin and a short time later was happy to accept the offer of his new pianist to compose and arrange a coherent work for the band. And so it was that the legendary Gillespiana came into being. The logical consequence of this was to move from the capital of Argentina to the United States.

Was darauf folgte, war wohl zu jener Zeit das Beste, was einem jungen Jazzer überhaupt passieren konnte. Dizzy Gillespie sprach Lalo Schifrin an und nahm kurz danach gerne das Angebot seines neuen Pianisten gerne an, ein zusammenhängendes Werk für die Band zu komponieren und zu arrangieren. So entstand das legendäre Werk Gillespiana. Die logische Folge: der Umzug von der argentienischen Hauptstadt in die Vereinigten Staaten.

After the success of Gillepie, the word quickly spread around Hollywood about the talent that had suddenly become available. This was the beginning of a collaboration that is still very much in the making. The music for well over a hundred films has been drawn from the repertoire of Lalo Schifrin. These include classics such as Mission Impossible, Dirty Harry, Bullet, Starsky & Hutch and Cool Hand Luke. Four Grammy Awards and six Oscar nominations followed.

Nach dem Erfolg mit Gillepie sprach sich auch in Hollywood rasend schnell herum, welches Talent hier plötzlich hatnah zur Verfügung stand. So startete eine Zusammenarbeit, wie man sie nur sehr selten verfolgen kann. Die Musik zu weit über 100 Filme kam aus dem Repertoire von Lalo Schifrin. Darunter Klassiker wie Mission Impossible, Dirty Harry, Bullet, Starsky & Hutch oder Cool Hand Luke. Es folgten vier Grammy-Auszeichnungen und sechs Nominierungen für den Oscar.

Not only because of his classical training on the piano, but also in the tradition of his father, who was concertmaster of the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, Lalo Schifrin never lost touch with classical music. Besides composing and performing jazz, he conducted the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Sultan of Oman, to name but a few.

Nicht nur wegen der klassischen Ausbildung am Klavier, sondern wohl auch in der Tradition des Vaters, der Konzertmeister des Philharmonischen Orchesters von Buones Aires war, verlor Lalo Schifrin nie den Kontakt zur Klassik. So dirigierte er, neben seiner Arbeit als Komponist und Jazz-Pianist, das Los Angeles Kammer Orchester, das London Philharmonic Orchestra und das Orchester des Sultans von Oman.

The entire musical oeuvre of Lalo Schifrin has always been characterised by the combination of jazz and classical music. Whether in the studio with Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Count Basie, Jon Faddis, James Moody, Louie Bellson and Kenny Burrell or on stage with Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Zubin Mehta — this man is at home everywhere. This is, of course, where it all comes to an end: Jazz meets symphony in collaboration with the London and Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.

So gestaltete sich das gesamte musikalische Schaffen von Lalo Schifrin stets in der Verbindung Jazz und Klassik. Ob im Studio mit Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Count Basie, Jon Faddis, James Moody, Louie Bellson und Kenny Burrell oder auf der Bühne mit Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras und Zubin Mehta - dieser Mann fühlt sich überall zuhause.
