Adolescence, this four-part miniseries, has saved my week, as I've binged on other productions that truly disappointed me. However, after reviewing what's already available on Netflix, I found it, and without any expectations, I decided to watch it.
I don't understand why other productions like Electrical status have had more promotion, being, in my opinion, a disaster and a waste of my time as a viewer. Fortunately, ADOLESCENCE, although it didn't have the same exposure from the same platform, has had a multiplying effect on those of us who watched it, and we enjoy the quality of this production.
Adolescence, esta mini serie de 4 capítulos ha salvado mi semana, ya que me embarqué con otras producciones que realmente me decepcionaron muchísimo. Sin embargo, revisando lo que ya puso disponible Netflix me conseguí con ella, y sin ninguna expectativa me dispuse a verla.
No entiendo por qué otras producciones como Estado Eléctrico han tenido más promoción, siendo en mi opinión, un desastre y una pérdida de tiempo como espectador. Afortunadamente, ADOLESCENCE aunque no contó con esa misma exposición de parte de la misma plataforma, ha tenido un efecto multiplicador entre quienes la vimos, y disfrutamos de la calidad de esta producción.
First, I want you to know that I immediately recognized Stephen Graham for his starring role in Boiling Point, a 2021 film that I loved for its restaurant-themed setting and all the struggles he faced as a chef in one day. The spectacular thing about this film was that it was shot entirely in continuous motion, and all the stress and tension were truly felt; and it also featured Graham's excellent performance.
In ADOLESCENCE, Graham, once again the lead character and now also the screenwriter, raises the bar for this miniseries, as its four episodes were also shot in continuous motion. This is a real challenge and admirable piece of work, mainly due to the outdoor scenes, the number of actors in each episode, the incredible angles taken, and the excellent performances.
Primero, quiero que sepan que identifiqué inmediatamente a Stephen Graham, por su papel protagónico en Boiling Point , una película del 2021, que me encantó por tener como tema un restaurant y todos los problemas que tuvo él como Chef en un día. Lo espectacular de esta película fue que estuvo grabada totalmente en cámara continua, y realmente se sintió todo el estrés y la tensión; y también por contar con la excelente actuación de Graham.
En ADOLESCENCE, Graham nuevamente como protagonista y ahora también como Guionista, eleva el nivel de dificultad escalando en esta mini serie, ya que sus 4 capítulos han sido grabado también con cámara continua, todo un reto y un trabajo admirable, principalmente por las escenas de exterior, la cantidad de actores en cada capítulo, los increíbles ángulos que se tomaban y las excelentes actuaciones.
ADOLESCENCE, as we can see in the trailer, begins when the Miller family is invaded by a police force in the privacy of their home. Armed with a warrant, they search the entire house, aggressively subdue the family, and take Jaime, their 13-year-old son, informing him that he is a suspected murderer.
Jaime's parents and sister suffer through this whole situation, insisting it was a mistake. Jaime himself presents himself as an innocent child, stating that he did nothing wrong, but that he cannot stop this police investigation. Remember that, as I mentioned earlier, the four episodes of this miniseries are filmed with continuous camera footage, effectively involving the viewer in each situation or scene, conveying the characters' anguish.
ADOLESCENCE, como podemos apreciar en el tráiler, comienza cuando la familia Miller es irrumpida en la privacidad de su hogar, por todo un comando policial, quienes con una orden registran toda su casa, someten de forma muy agresiva a la familia y se llevan a Jaime, el hijo adolescente de 13 años, informando que es sospechoso de homicidio.
Los padres y la hermana de Jaime, sufren toda esta situación, insistiendo que es una equivocación, incluso el mismo Jaime se presenta como un niño inocente, que manifiesta que él no hizo nada malo, pero que no puede detener este proceso policial. Recordemos que como les mencioné anteriormente, los 4 capítulos de esta mini serie están grabados con cámara continua, logrando con este recurso involucrar al espectador en cada situación o escena, al transmitir toda la angustia de los personajes.
Personally, this miniseries affected me deeply. I became completely immersed in all the issues and topics covered. It made me see everything a teenager goes through today, with social media, bullying, labeling, the violence young people respond with today, which we see in ADOLESCENCE. It also shows me the responsibility we have as parents not only to educate them and provide them with financial security, but also to know what our children are doing.
Whether Jaime is innocent or not isn't the main focus, because we're left with that at the end of the first episode. The miniseries goes much deeper and focuses on understanding what led Jaime to behave this way, what his friendships are like, how teenagers communicate today, how disconnected we adults are from all of this, and how the family is affected.
Personalmente, esta mini serie me afectó muchísimo, me involucré totalmente en toda la problemática y temas tratados, en el sentido que me hace ver todo lo que atraviesa un adolescente hoy en día, con las redes sociales, el acoso escolar, las etiquetas, la violencia con la que responden los jóvenes hoy en día y que vemos en ADOLESCENCE; la responsabilidad que tenemos como padres, de no solo educarlos y darles seguridad económica, sino también que debemos saber qué están haciendo nuestros hijos.
El hecho de si Jaime es o no inocente, no es el tema principal, porque eso nos lo dejan saber en el final del primer capítulo. La mini serie es mucho más profunda y lo que se trata es de entender qué llevó a Jaime a comportarse de esa forma, cómo es su entorno de amistades, la forma de comunicarse los adolescentes hoy en día, lo desconectados que estamos los adultos de todo esto y cómo se ve afectada la familia.
The use of continuous camera in all four episodes was impressive. This time, they gave us outdoor shots, creating interesting frames, focusing on one character and then focusing on another who enters the scene and takes the continuous camera. It was a more "pro" way of using this technique, so to speak.
The acting, I could say in general, but the performances of the father played by Graham and the teenager played by Owen truly stood out. I can't help but mention the performance of the psychologist in episode 3, played by Erin Doherty, who was truly exceptional.
La utilización del recurso de cámara continua en los cuatro capítulos fue impresionante. Las actuaciones, podría decir que en general, pero verdaderamente destacaron las actuaciones del padre interpretado por Graham y del adolescente interpretado por Owen. No podría dejar de mencionar la actuación de la psicóloga en el capítulo 3, interpretada por Erin Doherty, que realmente fue excepcional.
I waited for the results of the psychological evaluation, eagerly awaiting it, to hear the professional assessment of everything that affected this teenager, and the reasons for his behavior. I truly feel a great debt in this regard.

I recommend it 100%, and it's very much appreciated that, amidst all the trashy movies that have come out lately, we can enjoy a mini-series that offers us production, a story, good performances, and, above all, the opportunity to reflect on our role as parents and as a society.
