As a fan of the so-called "Seventh Art," I have my personal tastes when it comes to genres, and I've always said that my favorites are horror and crime novels. But I must admit that I also greatly admire when films and series on different platforms take us beyond entertainment and make us reflect and open our eyes to realities we may not be familiar with or that aren't part of our daily lives.
Such is the case with my last post in this community about the Mini Series "Adolescence". As a mother, I was very grateful for the reflection it gave us on the dangers that can affect the behaviors and actions of young people, a very complex problem that perhaps I didn't see as so vast and intricate. Along these same lines, today I want to talk to you about the film "Red Rooms," which shows us the dangers that can lurk in those dark and little-explored environments of the internet, like the deep web.
Como aficionada al llamado "Séptimo arte" tengo mis gustos personales en cuanto a géneros, y siempre he comentado que mis preferidos son el Terror y Policiales. Pero, debo reconocer que admiro mucho también cuando las películas y series de diferentes plataformas nos llevan más allá del entretenimiento, y nos hacen reflexionar y abrir los ojos a realidades que quizás no conocemos o no son parte de nuestro día a día.
Tal es el caso de mi último post en esta comunidad sobre la Mini Serie "Adolecencia" que como madre agradecí mucho la reflexión que nos ha dejado sobre los peligros que pueden afectar las conductas y actos de los jóvenes, un problema muy complejo que tal vez no lo veía tan grande e intrincado. En este mismo orden de ideas, hoy quiero hablarles sobre la película "Red Rooms", que nos muestra los peligros que pueden esconderse en esos ambientes oscuros y poco explorados de internet, como la deep web.
The film revolves around the ongoing trial of Ludovic Chevalier, a serial killer who broadcasts his crimes on the deep web through so-called "Red Rooms," virtual rooms where people can watch criminal acts by paying large sums in cryptocurrency (something horrifying, by the way).
The protagonist, Kelly-Anne, is a young woman with a wealth of tech knowledge who makes a living playing online games and modeling. We see her obsessed with the case, which she follows online and also attends the court sessions as a spectator or listener, but it's not entirely clear why she is obsessed with Ludovic.
We are also introduced to another young woman, named Clémentine. She is also obsessed with the case, but she defends Ludovic, whom she believes to be innocent and justifies every piece of evidence against him with absurd and irrational arguments. Kellys-Anne comes to empathize with Clémentine since she has no money and helps her eat, and they share an interest in Ludovic's trial.
La película gira en torno al juicio que se está realizando a Ludovic Chevalier, un asesino en serie que transmite sus crímenes en la deep web a través de las llamadas "Red Rooms", que son salas virtuales donde pagando altas sumas de dinero en criptomonedas, las personas pueden ver actos criminales (algo horroroso por cierto).
La protagonista Kelly-Anne, es una mujer joven con mucho conocimiento de la tecnología, que se gana la vida con juegos en internet y como modelo. La vemos obsesionada con el caso, al cual le hace seguimiento por internet y también asiste a las sesiones de juicio como espectador u oyente, pero no se entiende bien por qué su obsesión con Ludovic.
También nos presentan a otra joven, llamada Clémentine. Ella también está obsesionada con el caso, pero es defensora de Ludovic, a quien cree inocente y justifica cada prueba en su contra con argumentos absurdos e irracionales. Kellys-Anne llega a tener empatía por Clémentine ya que ésta no tiene dinero y la ayuda a comer y tienen en común el interés en el juicio a Ludovic.
Throughout the film "Red Room," we see more of the focus or story from the perspective of the protagonist Kelly-Anne. With an absolutely cold and controlled personality, we see her almost minimalist lifestyle, practically isolated from the outside world. She only interacts with modeling photo shoots, going out to eat alone, and otherwise spending time on the internet, making money from gambling. Little by little, we learn that she even consumes dark content. She has seen the videos about the murder of two of Ludovic's victims, hence her obsession with him.
En el transcurso de la película "Red Room" veremos más el enfoque o la historia desde el punto de vista de la protagonista Kelly-Anne. Con una personalidad absolutamente fría y controlada, vemos su estilo de vida casi minimalista, prácticamente aislada del mundo exterior. Solo interactúa con las sesiones de fotografía de modelaje, salir a comer sola y de resto solo estar en internet, haciendo dinero con los juegos o apuestas, poco a poco entendemos que ella incluso consume contenido oscuro, ella ha visto los videos sobre el asesinato de dos de las víctimas de Ludovic, y de ahí su obsesión con él.
I find Clémentine's character interesting because she represents real-life fanatics who have defended murderers such as Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, and Jeffrey Dahmer; and more recently, the fans and defenders of Wade Wilson. I really can't understand how people are capable of siding with these killers, supporting them, and even falling in love with them.
Fortunately, in this film, this character's arc was positive, as she finally comes around, which is a message that "Red Room" leaves us with, which I really liked.
El personaje de Clémentine, me parece interesante ya que representa a personas en la vida real, fanáticas que han defendido a asesinos, tales como Charles Manson, Ted Bundy y Jeffrey Dahmer; y más recientemente las fanáticas y defensoras de Wade Wilson. Realmente no logro entender cómo hay personas capaces de ponerse del lado de estos asesino, apoyarlos e incluso enamorarse de ellos.
Afortunadamente, en esta película el arco de este personaje fue positivo, ya que al final reacciona, de manera que es un mensaje que nos deja "Red Room", que me gustó muchísimo.
Now, the arc of the main character Kelly-Anne will blow your mind, and although it took me a while to understand her behavior, over the days I've thought a lot about her and have come to understand that she's a part of society where, although we don't support violence and crime, we eventually feel morbid curiosity to read a news story about an event like this in more detail, for example.
I think the complexity of this character has escalated due to her personality and intelligence, her almost solitary lifestyle, and the excessive consumption of this type of content on the internet. So it's a "Red Flag" that we should pay attention to, because even if we don't become as morbid as her, we could be testing our morals when we consume sensationalist or "sensitive" content, as they call it, and I think it can harm us unintentionally.
Ahora bien, el arco del personaje principal Kelly-Anne te va a volar la cabeza, y aunque me costó un poco entender su comportamiento, ya pasando los días he pensado mucho sobre ella y he logrado entender que es una parte de la sociedad, que aunque no apoyamos la violencia y el crimen, eventualmente sentimos el morbo por ver más en detalle una noticia sobre algún hecho como esos, por ejemplo.
Creo que la complejidad de este personaje ha escalado por su personalidad e inteligencia, su estilo de vida casi solitario y el exceso de consumo de contenido de este tipo en internet. Así que es una "Bandera Roja" que debemos prestar atención, ya que aunque no lleguemos a ser tan morbosos como ella, podríamos estar poniendo a prueba nuestra moral cuando consumimos contenido sensacionalista o "sensible" como lo llaman, y pienso que nos puede hacer daño desprevenidamente.
Although you might think I've given you a lot of away, the film and the main character actually have a very interesting ending and arc that will make us think and reflect on the dangers of the internet.
Let's remember that not only are the perpetrators of these crimes a crime, but consuming this content is also a crime. Although I've always known this and have told my children, after watching "Red Room" I felt the need to emphatically remind them, and here I am telling them that this film, like the miniseries "Adolescence," serves to raise awareness about the dangers that currently exist in society.
Aunque crean que les adelanté mucho, realmente la película y el personaje principal tienen un desenlace y arco muy interesante que nos hará pensar y reflexionar, sobre los peligros que hay en internet.
Recordemos que no solo comenten un crimen los autores de ellos, sino también es un crimen el consumo de este contenido. Aunque siempre he sabido esto y se los he dicho a mis hijos, luego de ver "Red Room" sentí la necesidad de recordárselos enfáticamente, y he ahí donde les digo que esta película al igual que la mini serie "Adolescencia" nos sirve para concientizar sobre los peligros que existen actualmente en la sociedad.
The performances, especially those of the protagonist, Kelly-Anne, played by Juliette Gariépy, and Clémentine, played by Laurie Babin.
The sets and photographs of this film showed us very pristine settings or locations, typical of what we imagine Canada to be like, because I've never actually been there.
They didn't show scenes of violence; the direction was very professional, and it left no room for doubt. As viewers, we're able to imagine the actions and the crime just by listening to the victims' screams. It wasn't necessary to see anything else to feel the terror of the events.
I really liked the final twist in "Red Room." It was terrifying and disconcerting because at times I didn't understand it (I must confess that), but after reflecting and talking about the film with other people, it was quite revealing and exciting to understand everything (I can't give you any spoilers).
Las actuaciones, principalmente de la protagonista Kelly-Anne interpretada por Juliette Gariépy y Clémentine interpretada por Laurie Babin.
Las escenografías y fotografías de esta película, nos mostraron escenarios o locaciones muy pulcras, típicas de lo que podemos imaginar que es Canadá, porque realmente nunca he ido.
Que no mostraron las escenas de violencia, la dirección fue realizada con mucho profesionalismo al respecto, y no dejó ninguna deuda en ese sentido. Como espectador somos capaces de imaginar las acciones y crimen solo escuchando los gritos de las víctimas, realmente no fue necesario ver nada más para sentir el terror de los acontecimientos.
El giro final de "Red Room" me gustó muchísimo, fue algo aterrador y desconcertante porque por momentos no lo entendí (debo confesarles eso), pero luego reflexionando y conversando sobre la película con otras personas fue bastante revelador y emocionante entender todo (no puedo darles spoilers)
- The pace of the film was somewhat uncomfortable, since I'm very used to the pace of Hollywood films, but this Canadian cinema has another, calmer pace, and it did make me a little desperate or I felt like seeing more action, not gore but more characters maybe, but hey, it's just a matter of style, it's really not that bad at all.
- El ritmo de la película fue algo incómodo, ya que estoy muy acostumbrada al ritmo de las películas de Hollywood, pero este cine canadiense tiene otro ritmo más calmado, y si me desesperó un poco o sentí ganas de ver algo más de acción, no de gore pero si de más personajes tal vez, pero bueno, es solo cuestión de estilo, realmente no es que esté mal para nada.
Of course, I recommend it. You have to watch it for everything I mentioned, to be more aware of the dangers of the internet, and maybe to understand a little about how these things work.
Por supuesto, la recomiendo. Tienen que verla por todo lo que mencioné, para estar más pendiente de los peligros que hay en internet, tal vez entender un poco cómo funcionan esas cosas.

I am struck by the obsession of the protagonists with the murderer, especially the character of Clémentine who defends him. It's true that you see that in real life with certain cases and it's hard to understand, so it's interesting that they explore it in the film. Sounds like a necessary film because of the message about the dangers of the net and it leaves you pondering. Maybe I'll give it a chance, good review!
