Movie - Emilia Perez
To be completely honest, I didn't think I'd be able to criticize a movie this much, especially one starring Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez. Since this controversial film was highly rated as one of the worst films of all time, I wanted to give it a chance to see if I could come to terms with it, but I wanted to leave that displeasure aside, since this production was disliked even by my closest friends, who tend to find the silver lining in everything.
Siendo totalmente sincera, no pensé lograr criticar tanto una película, y meno una donde estuviese Zoe Saldaña y Selena Gomez. Desde que esta polémica película estuvo en las más altas tendencias como una de las peores películas de la historia, quise darle una oportunidad a la película a ver si razonaba con ella, pero quise omitir ese disgusto, ya que esta producción tuvo repudio hasta de mis amigos más cercanos, y estos acostumbran a conseguirle el lado bueno a cualquier cosa.
The plot is simple: a Mexican drug trafficker (Karla Sofía Gascón) turns good and goes through a gender transition. He then searches for his ex-wife (Selena Gomez) to try to put things right with the help of his lawyer (Zoe Saldaña).
Although the subject matter doesn't seem problematic, the clear traces of hatred are evident, and each community made itself known to explain why everything was wrong here.
La trama es sencilla, un narcotraficante (Karla Sofía Gascón) mexicano que se vuelve bueno y pasa por una etapa de transición de género, luego busca quien era su esposa (Selena Gomez) para tratar de arreglar un poco las cosas con ayuda de su abogada (Zoe Saldaña).
Aunque el tema no parece problemático, se nota los claros detalles de odio que estuvieron presente y cada comunidad se hizo notar para dar a entender el porqué estaba mal todo aquí.
First, the racism that was present throughout. It was clearly evident here that they wanted to focus on the topic of Mexican drug traffickers, emphasizing that this beautiful country is the birthplace of drug traffickers.
The lead actors also played Mexican women, and when they spoke, it was clear how highly racist the script was toward the Mexican people, causing a stir online because the topic could have been handled well by many great Mexican filmmakers (like Salma Hayek).
Just as it's well known in the film world, when a Latino doesn't speak English, they aren't even slightly considerate, but they come and sing meaningless Spanish songs, and this is even more annoying.
Primero, el racismo que estuvo presente en todo momento. Aquí se notó claramente que quisieron enfocar el tema de los narcos mexicanos, haciendo énfasis sobre que este hermoso país es la cuna de los narcotraficantes.
También las protagonistas interpretando papeles de mujeres mexicanas, y al momento de hablar se notaba lo altamente racista que fue el guion con el pueblo de México, dando revuelo en internet porque el tema lo pudo haber manejado bien muchas grandes del cine que son oriundos de México (como Salma Hayek).
Al igual que se sabe que en el mundo del cine, cuando un latino no maneja el inglés no son ni un poco considerados, pero vienen a cantar musicas en español sin sentido y esto molesta aún más.
Second, we're facing the biggest betrayal the Academy has ever committed against us, film lovers. The Grammys and the Oscars praised this film as if it were a true gem, which left the public feeling disgusted, because it was up against true gems that were overshadowed by this film. One of these is Wicked, a true musical that had a real and serious direction.
Segundo, nos enfrentamos a la más grande traición que ha hecho la academia hacia nosotros, los amantes del cine. Los Grammy´s y Los Óscar´s elogiaron esta película como si fuese una verdadera joya del cine, lo cual llevó al público al disgusto, porque se enfrentó a verdaderas joyas que se opacaron por esta película, una de estas es Wicked, un verdadero musical que tuvo una dirección real y seria.
Because, as it turns out, this is also a musical. It didn't have serious songs, as racism was present here again, but the worst part was that it didn't convey any kind of positive message. Despite the fact that there were good singers involved, since they didn't know the language or the country they were portraying, they failed to deliver a performance that respected the face and beliefs of Mexicans.
Porque, resulta que esto también es un musical. No tuvo canciones serias, ya que aquí estuvo presente el racismo de nuevo, pero lo peor es que no daban ningún tipo de mensaje positivo, a pesar de que hubo buenos cantantes involucrados, al no conocer el idioma ni el país que manejaron no lograron tener una entrega que respetara el rostro y creencias de los mexicanos.
What I mean when I say that Mexican beliefs were mocked was the moment in the film where Karla Sofía Gascón's character is glorified as a “saint.”
Because a homicidal character with a rotten past who doesn't deserve to be a saint is sanctified, and they even hold marches in her image.
A lo que me refiero cuando digo que fue burlada la creencia de los Mexicanos, fue al momento de la película donde glorifica como “santa” al personaje de Karla Sofía Gascón.
Porque se santifica y hasta le hacen marchas con su imagen a un personaje homicida y con un pasado podrido que no merece ser santo.
Sadly, those involved in this film suffered a massive attack from Latinos. The film's director was the most vocal, especially when defending himself, because one of his comments was that our language is a “humble” language. He also made it clear that he didn't do much research on Mexico and its people, just as the film was “set in Mexico” but filmed in France.
On the other hand, Selena Gomez, seeing her fans' reaction to this scandal, publicly apologized and said she had no idea it would turn out this way. Zoe didn't really say anything, except that at the Oscars she said this film wasn't about Mexico itself, but about the life of her character, further upsetting Latino audiences.
Karla Gascon was the most controversial when she gave a racist interview against Zoe, being narcissistic and returning to the scandal of some old tweets in which she even showed herself to be homophobic.
Tristemente, los involucrados en esta película sufrieron un ataque masivo por parte de los latinos. El director de la película fue el que más dio que hablar, en especial, al momento de defenderse, porque uno de sus comentarios fue que nuestro idioma es una lengua “humilde”, y también dejó en claro que no tuvo una gran investigación sobre México y su gente, al igual que la película estaba “ambientada en México”, pero filmada en Francia.
Por otro lado, Selena Gomez al ver la reacción de sus fans a este escándalo, dio sus disculpas públicas y dio a conocer que no tenía idea que esto iba a resultar así, y Zoe no dijo realmente nada, más que en los Óscar dijo que esta película no estaba pensaba en sí en México, sino en la vida de su personaje, dando una nueva molestia al público latino.
Karla Gascón fue el más polémico al dar entrevista racista en contra de Zoe, siendo narcisista y volviendo al escándalo de unos antiguos Tweet en donde se mostraba hasta Homofóbica.
And finally, here's independent cinema's great response to this cinematic error. Johanne Sacreblue, a response to Emilia Pérez, absurdly based in France and proudly filmed in Mexico.
A group of Mexicans took on the task of creating this installment, in which they blatantly mock the French, just as they did to Mexico. And despite the fact that the cinema world hasn't reacted to this, Johanne Sacreblue has even made international headlines and currently has 3 million views since its release.
All in all, this was a terrible year for cinema, but it brought us some unforgettable moments, and Emilia Pérez became the most hated film of all time. It was definitely a controversial moment for everyone, but hopefully this serves as a lesson for everyone in the industry.
Y para finalizar, aquí está la gran respuesta del cine independiente a este error del cine. Johanne Sacreblue, una película de respuesta a Emilia Pérez, Basada absurdamente en Francia y filmada con orgullo en México.
Un grupo de Mexicanos se dieron la tarea de dar lugar a esta entrega, en donde se burlan descaradamente de los Franceses, tal como lo hicieron ellos con México. Y a pesar de que el cine no ha mostrado reacción alguna por esto, Johanne Sacreblue ha sido hasta noticia internacional y teniendo 3M de visitas actualmente desde su publicación.
En definitiva, este fue un pésimo año para el cine, pero nos trajo momentos que definitivamente son inolvidable, y Emilia Pérez pasó a ser la película más odiada de todos los tiempos, definitivamente fue un momento polémico para todos, pero se espera que esto sirva como lección para todos en la industria.

To be honest, I have seen a lot of takes on this film, and not even one of them was positive. It leaves so little to be desired when producers and directors do not even attempt to do proper research on the people they are showcasing. Just highlighting negative stereotypes and making it clear that they didn't care enough. I've seen enough of such films, and I do hope the Hollywood film industry does better moving forward.
