MOVIE REVIEW: MANNERLESS

My family and I decided to spend the weekend indoors watching movies last Saturday. Ben had a ton of movies downloaded for the weekend. We sat down to a treat of movies and popcorn after the usual Saturday chores, which I was too lazy to complete most of.

The first movie we saw will be remembered as the worst movie I saw in 2023, and it nearly dashed my hopes of an indoor weekend filled with movies until the next movie came up on the screen. The ending of the second movie tugged at my heartstrings and left me with a sense of joy and satisfaction, so I decided to do a movie review on it.

Review of the movie titled Mannerless

Mannerless is a 2023 Nollywood movie produced and directed by Ruth Kadri. Unlike most Nollywood movies, the title does not give any indication of the movie's possible plot.

Summary of the plot

The movie begins with Winnie, who is portrayed as obnoxious, ambitious, and apathetic towards "broke guys". Winnie believes she is too beautiful to be desired by a man who is not financially stable, and if any such man dares to approach her, she becomes truly mannerless, sometimes even attacking the person physically.

As the story unfolds, she meets Phil, the wealthy son of a wealthy tycoon who lives on the same estate as her. Phil, fully aware of what Winnie stands for, takes up the challenge to prove that the heart cannot choose who to love or fall for. Falling in love often happens at the wrong time and with the most unexpected person.

To achieve his goals, Phil employs the services of his cousin, Jake with whom he hatches a plan in which Jake becomes the son of the wealthy Tycoon and Phil becomes Jake's coursemate, who is squatting with Jake in search of money to set up a business, a.k.a. a broke man according to Winnie's dictionary.

The plot revolves around their unique journey of love and self-discovery, with a series of events leading to both heartwarming and challenging moments until Winnie finds herself breaking her own boundaries. She must choose between her heart and her beliefs.

My review and rating

The plot revolves around the overused, classic theme of love transcending social boundaries. The plot was predictable, and the plan to make Winnie fall in love was very unoriginal, but the acting was great, and even though the characters are new in the movie industry, they demonstrated that there is still a lot to be seen from them.

Phil, as a character in the movie, had great punchlines to counter Winnie's insults, and those punchlines made me laugh out loud. It brought back memories of watching the classic cartoon Tom and Jerry. The characters were visually stunning and painted a picture of what perfect love would feel like for a hopeless romantic.

Winnie, despite playing an obnoxious character at the beginning of the movie, exhibited some beautiful traits that made her likable at the end of the movie, which gave a moral lesson: don't judge a book by its cover.

Overall, Mannerless is a good movie for anyone looking for a simple and enjoyable love story. It told a story that encapsulated the essence of genuine emotions and human connections. I love how, despite having a cliché plot, it was still unique and charming. Mannerless teaches that love has the ability to change anyone.

I'll rate it a 6/10. Good movie for family time. Mannerless is of the genre drama and runs for an hour, thirty-two minutes.
