Absolute Zero

Absolute Zero. Watching this and I couldn’t help laughing a little bit with how the trailer went. It’s funny how something that was utterly gripping back then and left you with something almost akin to terror, is viewed with near amusement.

Absolute Zero (2006)

I saw this movie in 2010 or thereabout, but it was released in March 2006 and the story is about David Koch, a climatologist who proposes a theory about the last ice age and has sufficient reason to believe that another ice age is coming, and that too, much sooner than anyone would have expected. He presents his theory to his co-workers and boss, stating that the disaster is only a few hours away, and would happen right there in Miami, but of course, no one except his former love, Bryn, believes him.

When Miami keeps getting colder and colder, an evacuation is ordered for people to go up north, but David, Bryn and a few others miss the chance to escape, and their only hope is a special room at work which they hide in. Two hours later and everything within north and south of the equator turns to absolute zero of over -400 degrees Celsius, turning most parts of the world into an icy desert. Just how much havoc is going to be caused and who will survive it?

There! That’s a brief summary of this 96 minutes sci-fi/thriller. It’s funny how I haven’t heard anyone talk about this movie once. Not at any point. Even the internet doesn’t have too much to say about it and I’m wondering if the movie was a total flop. It doesn’t have a lot of great ratings, and it seems to be like one of those movies that was made and almost immediately sank into oblivion.

I admit that the CGI doesn’t leave much to be desired but it’s 2006, so I’m willing to cut them a lot of slack. Also, the scripting itself has a few things lacking that would have turned it into a movie with a stellar plotline, but I loved the movie regardless. Or maybe I’m looking at it from the coloured lens of a child’s eye, with all the thrill of watching ice steadily envelope everywhere, but it still felt like a good watch.

One thing that would always thrill me is watching science analysis and seeing it come to fruition. Or not. So, there were loads of science bit in this and the “science is never wrong,” line cracked me up, but in a good way. So, there you go. Absolute Zero, and the return of the ice age. Hope you enjoy. Do share your thoughts concerning this, if you’ve seen this production before.
