My Top Coming Of Age Animated Films

Produced by Dreamworks animation, this sci-fi comedy film is truly one of my favourite coming of age movies. I don’t know which part I loved more, The excellent scripting, or the animation itself. The idea of a highly intelligent dog that lives in a penthouse in New York with his adoptive son, just did things for me humour wise. But it wasn’t until the whole time travelling bit, from Ancient Egypt, to the French revolution, Leonardo da Vinci’s house of Renaissance Florence and all the very exciting antics that ensued, did I truly find pleasure in this movie. Mr. Peabody and Sherman is one animated film that I can boldly call my comfort watch, because you can totally rewatch it without it losing its novelty, and it is just that exciting and incredibly appealing to people of all ages. An enjoyable watch indeed.

Rise of the Guardians (2012)

So, there was a whole thing about this movie. How it was a flop, didn’t cater to all it was supposed to cater to, and all of that. But I genuinely enjoyed this movie for a lot of reasons. I loved Chris Pine’s character as Jack Frost. I loved the general idea of kids that had stopped believing in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and all of that, and a huge monster that took advantage of their unbelief to inflict them with nightmares. Of course, we know the truth to all of this, but it was lovely, the fact that we as the audience were choosing, for the sake of the film, to believe in something that very much does not exist. Maybe Dreamworks could have been more inclusive of us adults, but it’s still an amazing story by my counts.

Inside Out (2015)

Joy, Anger, Fear, Disgust, but most of all sadness. The last part being one of the core emotions felt when you’re beginning that transition from childhood. I’d like to call it one of the most long-lasting and detrimental emotions as well, because of how it easily it could spiral into the D-word. However, I enjoyed watching Inside Out because of how reflective it was. For parents, kids, teenagers and young-adults, it was an in-depth look into how the emotions of a child evolves. The prevalent ones and the fleeting ones. Watching young Riley go through the whole teenage phase, and the emotions that all had typical personalities of their own, struggling to get everything in control and save the most poignant memories, led by Joy, was certainly beautiful. Too many raging emotions, so I cannot classify this as a comfort watch of mine, but is no less enjoyable. Hehe.
