CineTv Contest: When I Fly Towards You

I happened to watch a Chinese drama recently. It was my second and it was embedded in romance, but that was a bonus in my opinion. What had me was the relationship between these five middle schoolers.

What started as a casual misunderstanding transformed into something that was just beautiful and wholesome. Zhang Lurang, Su Zaizai, Gu Ran, Jiang Jia and Guang Fang will live for a long time in my memory.

When I Fly Towards You is a coming off-age Chinese series that houses the elements of romance, comedy and friendship. It all starts with the transfer student Su Zaizai who falls head over heels for the introverted and intelligent Zhang Lurang. Su Zaizai is forward with a sunny personality while Zhang Lurang is the winter to her sun.

While the romance in this drama was so swoon worthy, it had me hooked for a different reason. Their friendship. The spirit of love they had towards each other. Granted, romance blossomed between four out of the five; Su Zaizai and Zhang Lurang, Jiang Jia and Gu Ran. Yet, I found myself falling for how much they genuinely cared about each other. This was proven by the actions of each member of the group when Guang Fang needed support.

There was also the part where they were all separated to chase their dreams. That’s what happens with life. We are brought to crossroads and it’s either “See you later” or “Goodbye”. For these five it was See You Later. This was the most nostalgic movie I series I have seen since I turned eighteen.

When I saw the contest post I knew I would be sharing this drama with my audience. This was swoon worthy and very laid back. It was cute too, but for me, I loved watching and getting to see each character of the five develop. The story had depth and the characters had their flaws and battles.

What was so beautiful about this drama was I got to experience the life of a teenager again. The trips, the camping, star gazing, watching the sunset, moments on the beach and of course, the classroom. It was all nostalgic and even brought tears to my eyes.

I also got to watch them chase their dreams. The frustration, sleepless nights and the doubt they all encountered. They had to fight for their place, once again.

Is there anything I didn’t like about this series? Not at all. The soundtrack even made it better.

My friend @tengolotodo called it, “watered down beach boy music”, yet it was very relatable to the series. I’ve had it and a few others on repeat. I think this is a series you need to see if you’re looking for escape from your reality, especially if it’s anything like mine.

It has 24 episodes and as I drew closer to the end, I felt like I was about to lose something. Just as if I was about to lose my friends. How weird is that? It did make me laugh. When I watched the final episode, I felt sad. I’m sure some of us have either seen a movie or read a book that we didn’t like had to end. That was how this was for me.

There were scenes that made me laugh, blush, cringe, cry, get mad, frustrated and hurt. Yes. I felt all those emotions which made it all the more real. You should see this series now that it’s on Netflix.

I don’t think there’s any coming off-age drama that could beat this in my heart, especially the characters. I have to commend the actors because they brought these people to life. There were moments that didn’t feel like acting at all.

Anyway, that’s my favourite movie with kids. Care to tell me yours? Join the CineTV contest here.

I so enjoy coming of age dramas. It reminds me of Twenty five- Twenty one. A K-drama I watched a couple of years back. I've never watched a Chinese drama before, but the emotions you've showcased here feel so real. So, I'm definitely going to try it. Nice recommendation!

I'll hold you to that o. I've been wanting to get to make you watch it. It's a blessing honestly and it's the perfect escape for the weekend. The duration of each episode is like 30 minutes so you can see some and go back later ❤️. I'll like to know what you think honestly. If you write your own review, even better.

Music can make me watch something. And you almost inspired me to watch this and make a ttt on the beach boys.
