The memories I have with this movie are not many in comparison, I do know that I saw it a couple of times on TV a long time ago, but I'm not sure if it made as much of an impact on me then as it does now. Let's face it, no matter what people say, this movie has a very outstanding level of production and direction. Not to mention Tom Cruise's acting, who, as always, manages to captivate and capture the viewer's attention with his great work (especially in a sci-fi movie like this one). Although it has its details that leave me thinking a little, its story is interesting and exciting at the same time. I'm not just saying that because of the unique way it mixes romance with a level of drama and suspense that manages to be on the same level as the amount of action that can be seen in this feature film. For many it may be a simple post-apocalyptic movie with the main character of Mission Impossible repairing and confronting machines on a desolate planet. But beyond the apparent flashiness you can get a pretty tragic story that can easily get you thinking about a lot of things.

Los recuerdos que tengo con esta película no son muchos en comparación, sí sé que la ví un par de veces en la televisión hace tiempo ya, pero no estoy seguro si me llegó a impactar tanto en aquel entonces como lo logró ahora. Admitamos que, sin importar lo que la gente diga, esta película posee un nivel de producción y dirección muy sobresalientes. Eso sin contar la participación actoral de Tom Cruise que, como siempre, logra cautivar y capturar la atención del espectador con su gran trabajo (y más en una película de ciencia ficción como esta). Si bien tiene sus detalles que me dejan pensando un poco, su historia es interesante y a la vez emocionante. No solo lo digo por la forma tan particular de mezclar el romance con un nivel de drama y suspenso que logra estar al mismo nivel que la cantidad de acción que se puede ver en este largometraje. Para muchos puede que sea una simple película post-apocalíptica con el protagonista de Misión Imposible reparando y enfrentándose a máquinas en un planeta desolado. Pero más allá de lo aparentemente llamativo se puede conseguir una historia bastante trágica que fácilmente nos puede poner a pensar bastante sobre varias cosas.

As I told you above, it revolves around Jack Harper, who after a busy day repairing flying probes and escaping from Scavengers trying to catch him, comes across a book that has an interesting message spoken by an ancient Roman governor. Their day ends well, albeit with losses due to a probe that was lost and the lack of materials to repair another one they have under maintenance. The next day they are greeted by a huge explosion, one of the huge ships they use to extract water from the oceans has exploded. The scavengers are more active at night, as usual, but this time they manage to give a very interesting hidden message to Jack, who, seeing that part of a scout ship falls from space, realizes that there are human survivors in a state of hyper-sleep. Among them is a girl he has seen in his recurring dreams where he finds himself in New York City, in the middle of 2017.

You've probably already noticed an interesting detail about the plot of this movie and that's how confusing it can get over the course of the two hours it runs. It's not that it's a simple story of just any post-apocalyptic world where humanity tries to survive at the expense of aliens and machines looking to wipe out the planet. We see that what they are trying to show us in this feature film is a mixture of a romantic story with mystery, drama and a level of suspense that becomes contagious at certain moments. While I'm a fan of all these genres, seeing them mixed in a work like this is a bit dense to digest. And it's even harder to do so when it decides to go down a narrative path that is mostly not used because of how difficult it is to get a story across. I'm talking about plot twists, which in this film abound in a not so exaggerated way. And when we begin to see the series of events that occur on the planet while the protagonist realizes that everything he knew about the world and his own reality is not entirely true, it is understandable that at the end one is left with a head full of smoke after so many twists and revelations.

Para empezar, hablemos un poco de la historia que nos intentan contar en esta película. Como ya les conté arriba, esta gira en torno a Jack Harper, quien luego de un ajetreado día reparando sondas voladoras y escapando de Carroñeros que intentan atraparlo, este se encuentra con un libro que posee un mensaje interesante dicho por un gobernador romano de la antigüedad. Su día termina bien, aunque con pérdidas debido a una sonda que se perdió y la falta de materiales para reparar otra que tienen en mantenimiento. Al siguiente día los saluda una explosión enorme, una de las enormes naves que usan para extraer el agua de los océanos ha explotado. Los carroñeros andan más activos en las noches, como siempre, pero esta vez lograrán darle un mensaje oculto muy interesante a Jack, quien al ver que parte de una nave exploradora cae del espacio, se da cuenta de que hay sobrevivientes humanos en estado de hiper-sueño. Entre ellos está una chica que ha visto en sus recurrentes sueños donde él se encuentra en la ciudad de Nueva York, en pleno 2017.

Seguramente ya te habrás dado cuenta de un detalle interesante sobre la trama de esta película y es lo confusa que puede llegar a ser en el transcurso de las dos horas que tiene. No es que sea una simple historia de un mundo post-apocalíptico cualquiera donde la humanidad intenta sobrevivir a costa de extraterrestres y máquinas que buscan acabar con el planeta. Vemos que lo que nos intentan mostrar en este largometraje es una mezcla de historia romántica con misterio, drama y un nivel de suspenso que llega a ser contagioso en ciertos momentos. Si bien soy fan de todos estos géneros, verlos mezclados en una obra como esta es un tanto denso de digerir. Y más difícil lo hace al decidir irse por un camino narrativo que mayormente no se utiliza por lo difícil que es lograr que se entienda bien una historia. Hablo de los giros de guión o trama, lo cual en esta película abundan de una forma no tan exagerada. Y es que cuando empezamos a ver la serie de acontecimientos que ocurren en el planeta mientras el protagonista se da cuenta de que todo lo que conocía del mundo y de su propia realidad no es del todo cierto, es entendible que al final uno se quede con la cabeza echa humo luego de tantos giros y revelaciones.

However, all these things he does and says are just a mere memory of something that doesn't really exist... as he is not really who he thinks he is. In the interest of not giving away too many spoilers, I'll just say that the way they develop the characters in this movie is very interesting. Sure, there are cases of secondary characters that could have done or given more, but it would already be asking too much, really.

Another thing that catches my attention is the special way of telling us a love story. Because yes, this film can also be interpreted as a love story. And the addiction of the relationships between the main characters, the dreams or memories that the protagonist has with a girl, her sudden appearance, the betrayal and the revelations that he has at the end are just some of the many elements that this work has to build a romance that literally transcends time and life itself. What I like is that, with all this, it didn't completely overshadow the rest. Especially the variety of scenarios of pure action, battles and explosions that appeal to anyone. Mixing a variety of different genres in a single work can be a bit of a drag to watch, but in this case I didn't find it so much of a drag. Sure, for a two hour movie it may have its moments where you feel overwhelmed or exhausted, but after seeing the ending it has all complaints go away and possibly a tear or two may come to your eye, perhaps. This movie, while not the best of its genre and type, is sure to be a spectacle.

Por otro lado, hablemos un poco del protagonista, siendo este un simple mecánico que curiosamente posee ciertos conocimientos y experiencia en combate, además de tener sueños de una vida pasada que no encaja en nada de lo que es. Todo esto se pone peor cuando una secuencia de acontecimientos y señales hacen que sus sueños se vuelvan más un recuerdo lejano de algo que no debería de existir, pero que al final sí existe. Es aquí donde la aparición de cierta persona le hace cambiar por completo su perspectiva general. Siendo este el único que se interesa y se preocupa por la Tierra, este tiene una vida más allá de su simple labor de mecánico. Tiene ciertos gustos y pasiones, además de cierta nostalgia con el pasado del mundo y lo que fue en su momento. Sin embargo, todo esto que hace y dice son solo un mero recuerdo de algo que no existe realmente… ya que él no es realmente quien cree que es. Para no dar tantos spoilers, solo diré que la forma en la que desarrollan a los personajes en esta película es muy interesante. Claro, hay casos de personajes secundarios que pudieron haber hecho o dado más, pero ya sería pedir mucho, la verdad.

Otra cosa que me llama mucho la atención es la forma tan especial de contarnos una historia de amor. Porque sí, esta película también se puede interpretar como una historia de amor. Y es que la adicción de las relaciones entre los personajes principales, los sueños o recuerdos que tiene el protagonista con una chica, su repentina aparición, la traición y las revelaciones que tiene al final son solo algunos de los tantos elementos que tiene esta obra para construir un romance que literalmente trasciende el tiempo y la vida misma. Lo que me gusta es que, con todo esto, no se llegó a opacar por completo lo demás. En especial la variedad de escenarios de pura acción, batallas y explosiones que atraen a cualquiera. El mezclar una variedad de géneros diferentes en una sola obra puede llegar a ser algo pesado de ver, pero en este caso no me pareció que lo fuera tanto. Claro, para ser una película de dos horas de duración puede que tenga sus momentos en los que te sientas abrumado o agotado, pero luego de ver el final que tiene se te va toda queja y posiblemente te salga alguna lágrima, tal vez. Esta película, si bien no es la mejor de su género y tipo, es seguro de que es todo un espectáculo.

The use of dark and neutral color palettes is also remarkable. The same can be said of the makeup and the style of the costumes or outfits that you see the characters wear in this film. As for the visual effects, CGI is something that is used in a perfect way, especially with the design of the machines or probes, the ships or even the Tet itself inside -which may be the most visually striking-. The sound effects are also very remarkable, mostly because of the sounds made by the probes, to be honest. The soundtrack is also another excellence that combines perfectly with all of the above and manages to set the mood and transmit all the emotions that every moment of these two hours of film possesses. In short, this is a film that I would not recommend to everyone, only to fans of the genre who are more interested in experiencing different things.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 as far as the science fiction and action genre is concerned.

Con un alto presupuesto de más de 120 millones de dólares, es muy notable ver un nivel de calidad visual tan increíble de principio a fin. Y es que decir que cada fotograma o frame es un espectáculo visual es quedarse corto, ya que no solo los planos visuales aéreos, sino también las cámaras en movimiento o las mismas vistas de la gran ciudad hecha ruinas son elementos que enriquecen la imaginación de cómo se ve este mundo post-apocalíptico. El uso de las paletas de colores oscuros y neutrales es también notable. Lo mismo se puede decir del maquillaje y el estilo de los trajes o vestimentas que se ven que traen los personajes en esta cinta. En cuanto a los efectos visuales, el CGI es algo que se usa de una forma perfecta, sobre todo con el diseño de las máquinas o sondas, las naves o hasta el mismo Tet por dentro -que puede que sea lo más impactante a nivel visual-. Los efectos de sonido son muy destacables también, más que nada por los sonidos que hacen las sondas, la verdad. La banda sonora es también otra excelencia que combina perfectamente con todo lo anterior y logra ambientar y transmitir todas las emociones que poseen cada momento de estas dos horas de película. En resumen, esta es una cinta que no se la recomendaría a cualquiera, solo a los fans del género que más les interese experimentar cosas diferentes.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción y la acción.
