Surely you have seen or heard about this movie, and it is normal because of how popular it became in its time, in the early 2000s both in Latin America and the rest of the world. For those of us who are fans of psychological horror, it is normal that this film comes to mind, and although it has more suspenseful overtones, the way in which the plot plays with your mind by showing things, sounds and apparitions that in the end are not real is something that makes this film very good. Not to mention the ending, which completely blows your mind by showing how all the things that have been happening throughout the film have had a much more unreal and unmatched response than one would expect. It is to be expected that this film has been catalogued by an unknown sub-genre of horror called "fantaterror" as it mixes the fantastic with the horror genre itself. But, another of the details that have marked me the most is the excellent acting work that Nicole Kidman did in this film.

Eso sin mencionar el final, el cual te vuela la cabeza por completo al demostrar cómo todas las cosas que han estado ocurriendo durante lo largo de la película ha tenido una respuesta mucho más irreal e inigualable de lo que uno esperaba. Es de esperarse que esta cinta haya estado catalogada por un desconocido subgénero del terror llamado “fantaterror” al mezclar lo fantástico con el género del terror en sí. Pero, otro de los detalles que más me han marcado son el excelente trabajo de actuación que hizo Nicole Kidman en esta película.

Let's talk about the story we are told in this movie, which is about a small, seemingly wealthy family living in a mansion, no less. Crace (Nicole Kidman), the protagonist, demonstrates an excellent role as mother and caretaker of Anne and Nicholas, her two precious children that she loves and protects so much. Waiting for her husband's return from one of the bloodiest and most catastrophic wars in human history, Grace will have to be constantly caring for her children who cannot even feel the sunlight on their skin because they will end up burned. The mansion is like a perfect place to shoot a ghost movie, all gloomy, with no ray of light coming in or out, little color and life, plus a bunch of sheets covering everything, including the mirrors. The way they protect their children goes to such an extreme that they keep them locked up, never being able to go out during the day or be near any windows. The demanding rules of this house make them become outcasts, without any contact with other people (apart from having a big difference in social position compared to their neighbors that we never see during the film).

When these three strangers arrive at the house to look for work, we see that they are a very different family from Grace and her children. The class distinction is evident, but not only that, but also the difference in parenting and care. While Grace is at pains to make clear to them the strict rules of the house, Mrs. Bertha and the others teach them that it is not normal to live in a darkened house as they are doing, that they cannot be completely cured of the illness their children have. The differences of ideas become in the end a nightmare as they experience every day, every night, paranormal phenomena in their huge mansion (that's it, a haunted mansion as it is). Now the stress of always having to take care of her children, correct and be aware of new employees and the paranormal events that are happening make Grace completely lose her mind, coming to imagine things that do not really happen or see people or figures that do not really exist... or maybe they do. While everything goes from being a tense and gloomy life to a horror movie, the ending they show us, after the big plot twist they suddenly throw at us, blows our minds, since in the end we won't know how to differentiate well who the visitors really are or what has really been happening in this mysterious mansion during all this time.

Hablemos de la historia que nos cuentan en esta película, la cual trata de una pequeña familia aparentemente adinerada que vive nada menos que en una mansión. Crace (Nicole Kidman), la protagonista, demuestra un excelente papel de madre y cuidadora de Anne y Nicholas, sus dos preciados hijos que tanto ama y protege. A la espera del regreso de su esposo de una de las guerras más sangrientas y catastróficas de la historia humana, Grace tendrá que estar constantemente al cuidado de sus hijos que no pueden siquiera sentir la luz del sol en su piel porque terminarán quemados. La mansión es como un lugar perfecto para rodar una película de fantasmas, toda sombría, sin ningún rayo de luz que entre o sale, con poco color y vida, además de un montón de sábanas tapándolo todo, incluído los espejos. Mientras todo pasa de ser una vida tensa y sombría a una película de terror, el final que nos muestran, luego del gran giro de guión que nos lanzan de repente, nos hace volar la cabeza, ya que al final no sabremos diferenciar bien quiénes son realmente los visitantes o qué es lo que realmente ha estado sucediendo en esta misteriosa mansión durante todo este tiempo.

The gray tones that we always see in and around the mansion, the fixed shots sometimes mixed with moving shots as if we were also living all these events and the parts where we can see what the members of the house do, say and think are details that give the film that tension and suspense. As for the performances, I already mentioned how excellent Nicole Kidman did along with the other members of the cast by showing us a variety of characters who spend their time developing in a strange way in a gloomy mansion with strange and terrifying events. The way we see how they play with Grace's and the others' minds throughout the film makes us easily identify with them, as if they were playing with our minds as well. The sound effects in the film are very well done, as well as the soundtrack, which together give us an audiovisual spectacle full of tense moments and a suspense that is simply indescribable. In the end, we are talking about a horror movie that fulfills very well with giving us an experience full of fear, tensions and one or another mental game that traps you completely.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating as far as the horror and suspense genre is concerned.
