From Entertainment to Inspiration: Lessons from House MD Series...
I've always loved movies, especially ones that were written with cool heads and thoughtful precision having lots of valuable lessons to pass across. That way, I kill two birds with one stone; Entertainment and Learning.
I have watched a lot of movies, and many of them inspire me. This is because before watching a movie, I usually take out time to read the synopsis and ensure the theme has got something to offer. One of those movies is House MD.
House MD is a medical series that's packed with not only lessons but also has loads of sarcasm, which makes the series stand out amidst other medical series. It's hard to see someone in this field who doesn't know a thing about this series because it's not just an entertainment but a masterclass in critical thinking, dedication and resilience.
Now, let's not dive into the sarcastic aspect of this series, lol. let's peep into the lessons I picked from this series as I watched them...
- Never Give Up
This phrase is almost like an alarm to the ears of everyone, but when it's actually time to display that in actions, we give up even before we started. Watching House MD gave this phrase, "never give up" a deeper meaning.
You literally see Dr. Gregory House battling through saving his patient's life amidst all odds, taking the most logical dimension towards saving that patient.
He failed to nail the diagnosis many times, but that doesn't stop him from trying again, he tried and tried till he got there.
This inspires me to know that most times in life, the answer to what we seek might just be thin miles away from where we've worked hard to come, allowing all the years of hard work go to drain because of the thinnest sacrifice left shouldn't come to our minds because success could be closer than we think.
- Teamwork
Being a lone wolf isn't always the right way to life. This is because no one is an oracle of knowledge and no one knows it all in life.
Just like Dr. House's team, you see him falling back to them to either correct him or come out with the right answer despite all his knowledge.
- Be Curious
Most times we left a lot of puzzles unsolved because we are not curious enough. We choose to leave things as we met them rather than thinking deep as to reasons why they were in the state we met them and knowing if there were better ways they could be kept.
In House MD, curiosity remains the foundation of every diagnosis despite how confusing the symptoms patients came with.
Curiosity in medicine will make you try find out the root causes of the symptoms your patient came with rather than just treating the symptoms you see.
- Resilience Even In The Face Of Difficulties
You can't not but appreciate the resilience Dr. Gregory House put up with in this series. Despite his chronic leg pain, he still was determined to save his patients.
This teaches me that while in this practice, atimes you may have challenges but never should any amount of challenges make you lose focus on your goal.
- Relevance of Rest And Support Groups
In House MD, you get to see the relevance of balancing out your personal and professional life.
Also, practicing medicine comes with lots of traumatizing moments that often affects you psychologically and you shouldn't resist to get help whenever that happens. In House MD, we see the relevance of getting help when needed.
The relatability of this series is what makes it stand out for me as it reflects the real life situation of how things go about.
Sometimes patients died within Dr. House's care and other times, they survived because that is the reality of life... As a doctor, you really can't save everyone no matter what you do.
It is this relatability that transforms this series into a great inspiration to physicians.
What about you? Is there a movie or series that has inspired you or taught you valuable life lessons?
