Nostalgia, that little friend that Hollywood has exploited to the point of exhaustion lately, sometimes with surprisingly good results, but on other occasions, unfortunately, ending in disaster and great disappointment. In the latter line, enter the "sequel" to The Craft, that film from the nineties that ended up becoming a classic for a generation. The new instalment, called The Craft: Legacy, was released in 2020, yet it went so unnoticed by me that it was only last weekend that I had the chance to see it.

The story follows Lily, a young teenager who moves with her mother to a new town. On her first day of school, she experiences an incident that makes her the target of teasing and, subsequently, bullying. This event draws the attention of a group of girls who become her friends and support her as she faces this difficult situation. As the plot progresses, these girls reveal to her that they are witches and practise magic, after which they invite her to join their secret circle, believing Lily to be the fourth member they need. As Lily develops her magical abilities, the group experiences an obvious increase in power and begin to use it for fun and to deal with problems.

At first the plot is quite similar to the original film, however, as the minutes go by it becomes noticeably detached from it, which I thought was quite clever, the issue is that it becomes bland, boring, predictable and pointless. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's one of the worst films I've seen recently. I'm not sure if maybe it wasn't aimed at my audience, but in my opinion, it turned out to be awful.

During their magic practice, the girls make several references to the original film, although the subject leans towards something much more childish. This is a noticeable change between the two films. Although both have teenage protagonists, the 1990s version has a darker tone than the new one, in which we even see glitter in one of the spells the girls perform as they prepare to attend a party. Since the group of girls in the new film do not face as obvious problems as the protagonists of the previous film, their actions seem more like a game than anything else, lacking genuine emotions and not being entertaining.

A "transcendental" moment for the development of the film occurs when the girls cast a spell on a boy, transforming the typical bully into a politically correct and kind boy, into something that could only be described as an "ally". While this might make sense in real life, in the context of the film it is anticlimactic and does nothing to make the plot more interesting. In fact, the film becomes even duller, as it squanders the opportunity to take the spell to more shocking extremes as its predecessor did.

I spent much of the film waiting for something minimally intriguing and interesting to happen, and it wasn't until near the end that the "villain" is revealed. Unfortunately, everything happens in the most predictable way possible. Not to mention the denouement, where the girls deal with the situation in such a clichéd and ridiculous way that it made me laugh and made me compare them to a rather pathetic attempt at benders (Avatar).

The performances don't stand out either, not even the adult cast is saved from the very poor quality of the film. For me, seeing David Duchovny (The X-Files) in such a poorly developed character with such a poor performance was really disappointing. As for the girls' performances, they were also quite flat, full of clichés and lacked genuine emotions. They gave the impression of girls playing witches, without really believing in it.

Even the technical aspects of the film leave much to be desired. The locations are current and every day, so there is not much effort put into that. The costumes, compared to the cool looks of the original film, were a complete disappointment. The music barely had any impact on me, although I recognise that this may vary depending on the audience. But what is truly unforgivable are the very low quality visual effects in the film. The flashes of colour and fire spells look like something out of a cartoon, let alone the final confrontation with the "villain", the effects are lousy for a film of the year 2020, causing more laughs than impressions.

I would definitely not recommend this film to anyone. Although the original has its flaws, it also has some remarkable elements. In contrast, I found nothing positive in this sequel, not even as an example of "female empowerment", something that worked well in the 1990s film. This one leaves several loose ends in terms of details and characters, as if they forgot to close those stories. I'm not sure if this is due to the possibility of a future sequel (I hope not), but the ending felt really poorly executed.

The conclusion feels rushed, which is disconcerting considering that for more than half the film, nothing truly interesting happens. Perhaps if the conflict had been presented earlier, they would have had a chance to resolve all the loose ends they left. However, they chose to forget those details and bring closure to a film that was ultimately a waste of time and premise.

La nostalgia, esa pequeña amiga que últimamente Hollywood ha explotado hasta el cansancio, a veces con resultados sorprendentemente buenos, pero en otras ocasiones, lamentablemente, termina en un desastre y una gran decepción. En este último renglón entre la "secuela" de The Craft, aquella película de los noventa que terminó convirtiéndose en un clásico para una generación. La nueva entrega, llamada The Craft: Legacy, fue estrenada en el año 2020, sin embargo, pasó tan desapercibida para mí que fue hasta el pasado fin de semana, que tuve la oportunidad de verla.

La historia sigue a Lily, una joven adolescente que se muda junto a su madre a una nueva ciudad. En su primer día de escuela, experimenta un incidente que la convierte en objeto de burlas y, posteriormente, en blanco de acoso escolar. Este evento llama la atención de un grupo de chicas que se convierten en sus amigas y la apoyan mientras enfrenta esta difícil situación. A pesar de que ambas tienen protagonistas adolescentes, la versión de los noventa tiene un tono más oscuro que la nueva, en la cual incluso vemos brillitos de colores en uno de los hechizos que las chicas realizan mientras se preparan para asistir a una fiesta. Dado que el grupo de chicas en la nueva película no enfrenta problemas tan evidentes como las protagonistas de la película anterior, sus acciones parecen más un juego que otra cosa, sin emociones genuinas y sin ser entretenido.

Un momento “trascendental” para el desarrollo de la película ocurre cuando las chicas lanzan un hechizo a un chico, transformando al típico bully en un chico políticamente correcto y amable, en algo que solo podría describirse como un “aliado”. Si bien esto podría tener sentido en la vida real, en el contexto de la película resulta anticlimático y no contribuye a hacer la trama más interesante. De hecho, la película se vuelve aún más aburrida, ya que desperdicia la oportunidad de llevar el hechizo a extremos más impactantes como sí lo hizo su predecesora.

Gran parte de la película la pasé esperando que ocurriera algo mínimamente intrigante e interesante, y no fue sino hasta casi el final que se revela al "villano". Lamentablemente, todo sucede de la manera más predecible posible. Y ni hablemos del desenlace, donde las chicas enfrentan la situación de una manera tan cliché y ridícula que me hizo reír e hizo que las comparara con un intento bastante patético de benders (Avatar).

Las actuaciones tampoco destacan, ni siquiera el elenco adulto se salva de la calidad tan pobre de la película. Para mí, ver a David Duchovny (The X-Files) en un personaje tan mal desarrollado y con una actuación tan pobre fue realmente decepcionante. En cambio, en esta secuela no encontré nada positivo, ni siquiera sirve como ejemplo de "empoderamiento femenino", algo que funcionaba bien en la película de los noventa. Además, esta deja varios cabos sueltos en términos de detalles y personajes, como si hubieran olvidado cerrar esas historias. No estoy segura si esto se debe a la posibilidad de una secuela futura (espero que no), pero el final me pareció realmente mal trabajado.

La conclusión se siente apresurada, lo cual me parece increíble considerando que durante más de la mitad de la película no ocurre nada verdaderamente interesante. Tal vez si el conflicto con el villano se hubiera presentado antes, habrían tenido la oportunidad de resolver todos los cabos sueltos que dejaron. Sin embargo, decidieron olvidar esos detalles y darle un cierre bastante apresurado a una película que terminó siendo un desperdicio de tiempo y de premisa.
