From space travel to crime and fables: Black Mirror Season 6

Hello my dear friends of Movies & TV Shows, today I come, of course, with the review of the sixth season of Black Mirror. How I loved this series, indescribable. I have not seen the movie because when I tried, the device I had did not allow me, and the truth is that I have not tried again. But of course season 6 had to be more than watched.

We will see in this review, a small opinion of each episode. You already know that Black Mirror (if you don't know you are finding out now, hehe), has episodes that are not related to each other, but each one is a complete story in itself. So I'll make an introduction of each one of them and then at the end, I'll share my general opinion about the 6th season.

De viajes en el espacio a crímenes y fábulas: Black Mirror temporada 6

Hola mis queridos amigos de Movies & TV Shows, hoy vengo, cómo no, con la review de la sexta temporada de Black Mirror. Cómo amé esta serie, indescriptible. No he visto la película porque cuando lo intenté, el dispositivo que tenía no me lo permitía, y la verdad es que no he vuelto a intentarlo. Pero claro que la sexta temporada tenía que ser más que vista.

Veremos en esta reseña, una pequeña opinión de cada episodio. Ya saben que Black Mirror (si no lo saben se están enterando ahora, jeje), cuenta con episodios que no tienen relación entre sí, sino que cada uno es una historia completa en sí mismo. Así que haré una introducción de cada uno de ellos y luego al final, compartiré mi opinión general sobre la 6ta temporada.

Sé que el post es bastante largo, pero ustedes pueden elegir sobre qué episodio leer si no quieren leerlo todo.

Joan is awful

Salma Hayek plays a spectacular role in these multiple dimensions that happen between reality and virtuality or artificiality. While there are certain people living in the "real" world, there are two, three dimensions beyond where other beings play those who inhabit and live in reality, but they do not know it. They are so identified with their role that they never doubt their existence, until they are really threatened. This game reminded me of the movie "Inception", a production that I have to keep learning about.

The roles in the other artificial dimensions are so sinister, that they can even show someone how their life happens in front of their eyes, but it is not just anyone, and the focus is on the workers of a Netflix-like platform, where even movie stars seem to have signed an agreement authorizing the recreation of their person in fictitious productions.

An interesting episode, gripping, strange, and that leads us to question the existence in the style of the aforementioned film and how not to make reference to Matrix, in a sense the mother of these theories in audiovisual productions.

Joan is aweful

Salma Hayek interpreta un papel espectacular en estas múltiples dimensiones que suceden entre la realidad y la virtualidad o artificialidad. Mientras existen ciertas personas habitando en el mundo “real”, hay dos, tres dimensiones más allá en donde otros seres interpretan a quienes habitan y viven de verdad, pero ellos no lo saben. Están tan identificados con su rol, que en ninguún momento ponen en duda su existencia, hasta que en verdad se ven amenazados. Este juego me hizo recordar la película “El Origen”, una producción de la que tengo que seguir aprendiendo.

Los roles en las otras dimensiones artificiales son tan siniestros, que incluso pueden mostrarle a alguien cómo su vida transcurre frente a sus ojos, pero no se trata de cualquiera, y el foco está en los trabajadores de una plataforma estilo Netflix, en donde incluso estrellas de cine parecen haber firmado un acuerdo autorizando la recreación de su persona en producciones ficticias.

Un episodio interesante, atrapante, extraño, y que nos lleva a cuestionarnos la existencia al estilo el film mencionado y cómo no hacer referencia a Matrix, en cierto sentido la madre de estas teorías en las producciones audiovisuales.

Beyond the Sea

Two astronauts lead an off-planet life while their families exist there awaiting the return of such a figure inside the home. The thing is, whoever returns is a sort of hologram, a very real hologram, who somehow plugs in to spend a few days with their loved ones. The point is that there is a kind of configuration that allows the astronaut to play himself or his companion.

The family of one of the astronauts is massacred by people who rally against these advances, so this man, out of envy and jealousy, ends up traveling to the home of his partner, who still has his family alive. Eventually this turns into the worst of misfortunes.

Beyond the Sea

Dos astronautas llevan una vida fuera del planeta mientras sus familias existen allí esperando el regreso de tal figura dentro del hogar. El tema es que quien vuelve, es una especie de holograma, un holograma muy real, que de algún modo se enchufa para pasar unos días con sus seres queridos. La cuestión es que hay una especie de configuración que permite al astronauta hacer de él mismo o de su compañero.

La familia de uno de los astronautas es masacrada por personas que se movilizan en contra de estos avances, por lo que este hombre, por envidia y celos, termina viajando a la casa de su compañero, que todavía tiene a su familia viva. Finalmente esto se convierte en la peor de las desgracias.

Loch Henry

A happy couple goes to the middle of nowhere to visit the groom's mother and an older woman who looks away from her son's partner. Both aspiring film producers and/or directors, they approach the place with an idea, as they end up studying the life of a murderous psychopath, in charge of ending the lives of several people and even filming them.

They arrive at the criminal's house and discover that the actual scene is noticeably worse than what they had imagined, to which they add that as they go along in the production, everything seems to become more shady and suspicious.

After an accident, the boy is hospitalized. When his girlfriend arrives at her mother-in-law's house and starts to work on the project, she discovers, in an old VHS, a record of murders carried out by the owner of the house and her husband. That is, her boyfriend was the son of these characters. The ending is not very pleasant, I do not want to spoil it, so I will avoid it in the review.

Loch Henry

Una pareja feliz que va al medio de la nada a visitar a la mamá del novio y una señora mayor que de entrada mira con distancia a la pareja de su hijo. Ambos aspirantes a productores y/o directores de cine, se acercan al lugar con una idea, mientras terminan por estudiar la vida de un psicópata asesino, encargado de terminar con la vida de varias personas e incluso filmarlos.

Llegan a la casa del criminal y descubren que la escena real es notablemente peor que lo que habían imaginado, a lo que se le suma que a medida que van avanzando en la producción, todo parece volverse más sombrío y sospechoso.

Tras un accidente el chico queda internado. Cuando la novia del mismo llega a la casa de su suegra y se pone manos a la obra para avanzar en el proyecto, descubre, en un viejo VHS, registro de asesinatos llevados a cabo por la dueña de casa y su marido. Es decir su novio era el hijo de estos personajes. El final es poco agradable, no quiero arruinarlo, por ello lo evitaré en la reseña.

Mazey Day

What happened in this episode? I don't really know. In this one I apologize, but I'll tell a bit of the ending, so if you feel like watching it, don't read it. From a famous girl who runs over a man, we move on to a werewolf. At the beginning everything was gloomy and macabre, although at the same time it was understandable, but then the matter becomes strange when some papparazzi start looking for the whereabouts of this actress who, after the accident (never brought to light), disappears without a trace.

They offer too much money for some photos of this woman, so there are some papparazzi who set out to find her. The photos they get are priceless, as the acclaimed Macy is indeed. More than a woman, she is a wolf-woman.

Mazey Day

¿Qué pasó en este episodio? No lo sé muy bien. En este pido disculpas, pero contaré un poco el final, así que si tienen ganas de verlo, no lo lean. De una chica famosa que atropella a un hombre, pasamos a una mujer lobo. Al principio todo marchaba lúgubre y macabro, aunque al mismo tiempo era entendible, pero después la cuestión se torna extraña cuando unos papparazzis empiezan a buscar conseguir el paradero de esta actriz que tras el accidente (jamás puesto a la luz), desaparece sin dejar rastro.

Ofrecen demasiado dinero por unas fotos de esta mujer, así que hay algunos papparazis que se dan a la tarea de encontrarla. Las fotos que consiguen son invaluables, pues la aclamada Macy es en verdad. Mas que una mujer, es una mujer-lobo.

Demon '79

And we come to the demons in Black Mirror, in the form of a small rock strangely placed in a place, opens the door to an Indian girl, living in the 70's or so, in the United States, when discrimination was more applauded than rejected.

For some reason this girl has some sensations and desires to kill a person when she is disturbed, and as if by chance she arrives to a basement where she is attracted by an object that when she takes it and accidentally spills a drop of blood on it, opens the door to a being that is a demon, as if we were talking about the magic lamp of Aladdin.

The young girl, who although out of momentary anger wanted to kill someone, was a being of good, with good habits and intentions, is suddenly forced by the demon to become his servant, with the excuse that if she doesn't do what he says (watch the episode to find out, as I don't want to spoil it), the whole world will end.

In the end this episode introduces some characteristics of Stockholm syndrome mixed with touches of kindness, although the latter is questionable.

Demon ‘79

Y llegamos a los demonios en Black Mirror, en formato pequeña roca extrañamente colocada en un sitio, abre la puerta a una chica india, que vive en los años 70 aproximadamente, en Estados Unidos, cuando la discriminación era mas aplaudida que rechazada.

Por algún motivo esta chica tiene algunas sensaciones y deseos de matar a una persona cuando la alteran, y como por casualidad llega a un sótano donde se ve atraída por un objeto que al tomarlo y accidentalmente derramar una gota de sangre en el, abre la puerta a un ser que es un demonio, tal como si estuviésemos hablando de la lámpara mágica de Aladín.

La joven, que aunque por ira momentánea quería matar a alguien, era un ser del bien, con buenos hábitos e intenciones, de pronto se ve forzada por el demonio a convertirse en su sirvienta, con la excusa de que si no hace lo que el dice (vean el episodio para saberlo, ya que no quiero estropearlo), el mundo entero terminará.

Al final este episodio introduce algunas características del síndrome de Estocolmo mezcladas con toques de bondad, aunque esto último es cuestionable.

Opinion

If there is something in common that I noticed in the episodes of this sixth season, is that on the one hand, again Black Mirror plays indiscriminately with the past, present and future, something that always caught me of this series, but there was a central theme that exasperates me, and for some reason, I don't feel good vibes about it, although I analyze it from two perspectives.

I am referring to the issue of discrimination due to immigration or skin color, and even for not fitting the socially established parameters of beauty.

I completely understand the sarcasm that has always characterized Black Mirror, which somehow allows it to play with these issues, opening the door to subjective analysis, of course; but many of them lead to feed social fragmentation at different levels.

And it is that in the episodes the immigrant person is referred to as the discriminated one, as that being who should not be there, even if we talk about a supposed acceptance, it is clear how "inside", in the internal, many families end up discriminating, although that attitude no longer takes place.

Si hay algo en común que noté en los episodios de esta sexta temporada, es que por un lado, nuevamente Black Mirror juega de manera indiscriminada con el pasado, presente y futuro, algo que siempre me atrapó de esta serie, pero hubo una temática central que me exaspera, y por algún motivo, no siento buena vibra al respecto, aunque lo analizo desde dos perspectivas.

Me refiero al tema discriminación por inmigración o color de piel, e incluso por no encajar con los parámetros socialmente establecidos de belleza.

Comprendo por completo el sarcasmo que siempre ha caracterizado a Black Mirror, que de alguna manera le permite jugar con estos temas, abriendo la puerta a los análisis subjetivos, claro; pero que muchos de ellos conducen a alimentar la fragmentación social en diferentes niveles.

Y es que en los episodios se hace referencia a la persona inmigrante como la discriminada, como ese ser que no debe estar allí, incluso si hablamos de una supuesta aceptación, queda claro como hacia “adentro”, en la interna, muchas familias terminan discriminando, aunque ya no tenga lugar esa actitud.

There was also another cross-cutting theme, and it was just the cinematographic or television, this led me to remember the Oscar Birdman, which only Hollywood understood well, and is that in most of the episodes, or the current streaming platforms, or some aspiring director, or an actress tormented by paparazzi, were the central axis of the story. This theme seems to me very good, because it allows us to see how for the outside there is an image, and how opinion is gestated in an ignorant public, but how within each story of a famous multimillionaire, there may be problems that exceed the delicate and painful. We already opened the door to this theme in an episode of season 5, "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too".

Overall I thought it was a good season. I prefer the first few episodes, which, with a few episodes, made you shake your belief system and mental order in society. I feel that now it's a bit forced, but it still keeps its originality, its bittersweet touch, its sarcasm and its questioning of what we call "reality".

I'm tagging @dimeshana here, after having read and agreed in comments his mention, which is very good and almost opposite to mine, hehe. I recommend reading it, because this way you can have two very different points of view.

Y es que a simple vista parece una invitación a abrir los ojos, que me parece perfecto, desde otro cristal, en ciertos mensajes indirectos de la trama, hay una laguna que podría estar dejando lugar a una discriminación justificada. Y es que al final hay que analizar el rol del inmigrante, o del que tiene un color de piel que no es el blanco, o de quien de pronto tiene un peso que no es el que se fomenta y publicita, y demás. No sé, esta es mi simple opinión.

También hubo otro tema transversal, y fue justamente el cinematográfico o televisivo, esto me llevó a recordar la película ganadora del Oscar Birdman, que sólo Hollywood entendió bien, y es que en la mayoría de los episodios, o las actuales plataformas de streaming, o algún aspirante a director, o una actriz atormentada por paparazzis, fueron el eje central de la historia. Este tema me parece muy bueno, porque permite ver cómo para el afuera hay una imagen, y cómo se gesta la opinión en un publico ignorante, pero cómo dentro de cada historia de un famoso multimillonario, pueden existir problemas que exceden lo delicado y lo doloroso. YA nos abría la puerta a esta temática un episodio de la temporada 5, “Rachel, Jack y Ashley Too”.

En general me pareció una buena temporada. Me quedo con las primeras la verdad, que con pocos episodios, hacñian tambalear tu sistema de creencias y orden mental en la sociedad. Siento que ahora la cosa está un poco forzada, pero sigue conservando su originalidad, su toque agridulce, su sarcasmo y su cuestionamiento a lo que llamamos “realidad”.
