"Let my spirit carry me"- Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002). (ENG/ESP).

A story with an animation that takes us back to those golden ages of childhood for many, that stands out for its music, the nature it shows and for its ideals; a film with a simple narrative that shines for the complexity of its message; that is "Spirit: The Untamed Jail". When I first encountered this film, I was just a child, and yet it made such a deep impression on me that it is still a film I remember and admire to this day. The story of Spirit is one of those that you can watch again no matter how many years go by, because its message simply doesn't get old.

Una historia con una animación que nos traslada a esas épocas doradas de la infancia para muchos, que destaca por su música, la naturaleza que muestra y por sus ideales; una película con una narrativa sencilla que brilla por la complejidad de su mensaje; eso es “Spirit: El córcel indomable”. Cuando me encontré por primera vez ante esta película era apenas una niña, y sin embargo, me impresionó profundamente al grado de que todavía es una película que recuerdo y que admiro hasta la fecha. La historia de Spirit es una de esas que puedes ver de nuevo sin importar cuantos años pasen, porque simplemente su mensaje no envejece.

Our introduction to this story comes from two very important voices: the voice of Spirit himself, which in its original language (English) is dubbed by Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting; Saving Private Ryan) and by the musical voice, which thanks to Hanz Zimmer (The Lion King; Gladiator; Pearl Harbor) in collaboration with Bryan Adams, are responsible for conveying all the anger, helplessness and desire for freedom of our protagonist, the mustang horse Spirit. After witnessing his birth, Spirit places us in a meadow where all his experiences, sorrows and pains take place. It is to see the scenario in which we are already accustomed to see the cowboys with their stories of the old west, but with the protagonist that until now had gone unnoticed: the horse.

Nuestra introducción a esta historia viene de la mano de dos voces muy importantes: la del mismo Spirit, que en su idioma original (inglés) es doblada por Matt Damon (En busca del destino; Salvando al soldado Ryan) y por la voz musical, que gracias a Hanz Zimmer (El Rey León; Gladiador; Pearl Harbor) en colaboración con Bryan Adams, se encargan de transmitir toda la ira, impotencia y deseos de libertad de nuestro protagonista, el caballo mustang Spirit. Después de ser testigos de su nacimiento, Spirit nos sitúa una pradera donde transcurren todas sus vivencias, sus penas, sus dolores. Es ver el escenario en el que ya estamos acostumbrados a ver a los vaqueros con sus historias del viejo oeste, pero con el protagonista que hasta ahora había pasado desapercibido: el caballo.

After his birth, Spirit, who lives with other horses, realizes that they are not alone in this magnificent piece of land, because he also lives with humans who do not have the best interests, who care very little about the freedom of a horse if they can take it for their benefit. Curiosity leads Spirit to experience hard times that violate anyone's will, but what difference does it make that the hero does not become a hero until he he heeds his call, even if his path seems like hell. Thus, the indomitable Spirit falls into the hands of an American cavalry, where the colonel in command tries to tame him after all the failed attempts of his subordinates.

I consider that this scene not only perfectly summarizes what I mentioned before, about how the music gives voice to our protagonist in a film where there is very little dialogue, but it also pits Spirit against his antagonist and rather than the latter being a jailer, this pair just have a very different concept of freedom for each other; for Spirit it is being indomitable and loyal to your ideals, but in the case of the colonel, freedom comes from power, from being in a position where you can subdue.

Después de su nacimiento, Spirit que vive junto a otros caballos se da cuenta de que no están solos en ese magnífico pedazo de tierra, pues también convive a la fuerza con humanos que no tienen los mejores intereses, a quienes muy poco les importa la libertad de un caballo si pueden tomarlo para su beneficio. La curiosidad lleva a Spirit a vivir momentos duros que vulneran la voluntad de cualquiera, pero qué más da que el héroe no se convierte en héroe hasta que no atiende a su llamado, aunque su camino parezca un infierno. Así, el indomable Spirit cae en manos de una caballería estadounidense, donde el coronel al mando intenta domarlo tras todos los intentos fallidos de sus subordinados.

Considero que esta escena no sólo resume a la perfección lo que he mencionado antes, acerca de cómo la música le da voz a nuestro protagonista en una película donde hay muy poco diálogo, pero también enfrenta a Spirit con su antagonista y más que ser este un carcelero, este par sólo tiene un concepto muy diferente de libertad para cada uno; para Spirit es ser indomable y leal a tus ideales, pero en el caso del coronel, la libertad viene del poder, de estar en una posición en la que puedes someter.

Now, here we have two very different human personalities, as we meet Little Creek, of the Lakota tribe, who is also a prisoner of the general's lust for dominance and power. Little Creek is all the counterpart you might expect: a lover of his land, of his animals, of his people, of his origin, and above all, a lover of the freedom of every living thing that dwells there. Of course, at first for Spirit there will be no difference from one human to another, but Little Brook will gain his respect and trust, and together they will join forces to get out of the confinement imposed by the colonel.

Ahora bien, aquí tenemos a dos personalidades humanas muy diferentes, ya que conocemos a Pequeño Arroyo, de la tribu Lakota, quien también es un prisionero más de las ansias de dominio y poder del general. Pequeño arroyo es toda la contraparte que puedes esperar: amante de su tierra, de sus animales, de su gente, de su origen, y sobre todo, amante de la libertad de todo ser vivo que allí habita. Por supuesto, al principio para Spirit no habrá diferencias de un humano a otro, pero Pequeño Arroyo se ganará su respeto y su confianza, y juntos unirán fuerzas para salir del encierro impuesto por el coronel.

There are current animated films with captivating stories and wonderful animations, eccentric or simple, because for all tastes there are all kinds of content, but despite falling into the cliché I consider the formula of this film is unrepeatable, and is full of memorable scenes that stay with you over the years, for its ingenuity in conveying their messages: Loyalty, love for nature and living beings, the dark side of humanity, the violence of the hand of weapons, and also for showing us that in healthy coexistence and respecting the value of every living being, human and animal can coexist. I have not seen a film like this one nowadays, but perhaps that is also the point of creating and building a story, to make it in such a way that there is no room for comparisons. I invite you to remember it if you have already seen it, or to be impressed if you haven't, by Spirit's life in his struggle to take care of one of the most valuable and precious things in the world: freedom.

Existen películas animadas actuales con historias cautivantes y animaciones maravillosas, excéntricas o sencillas, ya que para todos los gustos hay todo tipo de contenido, pero a pesar de caer en lo cliché considero que la fórmula de esta película es irrepetible, y está llena de escenas memorables que se quedan contigo con el pasar de los años, por su ingenio en transmitir sus mensajes: lealtad, amor por la naturaleza y los seres vivos, el lado oscuro de la humanidad, la violencia de la mano de las armas, y también por demostrarnos que en sana convivencia y respetando el valor de cada ser vivo, el humano y el animal pueden coexistir. Ya no he visto en la actualidad una película como esta, pero tal vez de eso se trata también crear y construir una historia, de hacerla de tal manera de que no haya lugar a las comparaciones. Les invito a rememorar si ya la han visto, o a dejarse impresionar en caso de que no, por la vida de Spirit en su lucha por cuidar una de las cosas más valiosas y preciadas en el mundo: la libertad.
