Film Review: Instinct to Kill (2001)

Many women, while married, realise that the men who were supposed to be ideal husbands turn out to be monsters. Few have such bad luck as protagonist of Instinct to Kill, 2001 action thriller directed by Gustavo Graef-Martino. Tess Beckett (played by Melissa “Missy” Crider), wife of police detective Jim Beckett (played by Tim Abell) not only has to endure his verbal and physical abuse, but later learns that he is also a vicious serial killer. Evidence she uncovers leads to Jim’s arrest and incarceration. Jim, however, escapes from prison and Tess knows she could become target of his vengeance. Tess’ friend, police detective Lance Difford (played by Kadeem Harrison), suggests that she hires J. T. Dillon (played by Mark Dacascos), security specialists who would teach her the art of self-defence.

Thanks to “conveniently” implausible plot details and plenty of cliches from much better serial killer films, Instinct to Kill is exactly what it looks like at the beginning – a cheap film with low budget that corresponds to the lack of ambition among its authors. What makes it somewhat interesting is slightly more violence which is of more extreme nature than most mainstream Hollywood films. Cast is mostly decent. Mark Dacascos, star of low budget action film,s handles his sometimes thankless role well and same can be said of charming Melissa Crider. But their efforts weren’t enough to compensate for the mediocrity in the rest of the film, so Instinct to Kill, unsurprisingly, sank into obscurity. This is a fate that most of those who watch this film consider as justified.
