Movie review: The Banker [ENG-ESP]

Many times we find movies or series of genres that we do not see recurrently that come to surprise us. Such is the case of The “Banker”, which in Spanish is known as El Banquero, which I saw a short film in a video of a social network of the web 2.0 and decided to watch it because it caught my attention, about the cast and the truth is that I do not regret it. So to close this weekend, I bring you my opinion about the film, always remembering that my writings are according to my personal experience, not at all a professional criticism.

Muchas veces nos encontramos películas o series de géneros que no vemos recurrentemente que nos llegan a sorprender. Tal es el caso de The "Banker", que en español se conoce como El Banquero, que vi un corto en un video de una red social de la web 2.0 y decidí verla porque me llamó la atención, sobre el cast y la verdad es que no me arrepiento. Así que para cerrar este fin de semana, les traigo mi opinión sobre el filme, siempre recordando que mis escritos son de acuerdo a mi experiencia personal, para nada es una crítica profesional.

The Banker is a 2020 film, which was directed by George Nolfi, while the screenplay was written by a group of screenwriters consisting of Niceole R. It is based on the story of Brad Kane, a drama based on true events, which tells us how in the 60's when racism was really strong in the United States, classes were well marked, where people of African-American skin color could not form their businesses in the banking world, they were even so denigrated that the support was practically null. Quite an inspiring film and is part of the beginning of the struggle for equality between the different races (black and white people) and that at least have the same opportunities to progress within the different communities.

It all begins with Bernard Garrett, who starts in the real estate business with the dream of being able to get his family ahead, despite the difference between blacks and whites that existed markedly at the time of the 60s in the United States. Bernard joins Joe Morris in the world of banks, where serious problems begin to arise for them, since a black person could not buy a company, a bank and even a building, but these two, with the help of Matt Steiner, a young white man, manage to achieve their goals. When everything seems to be going well, drama arises, giving a twist to the story, because we know that the beginning of the struggle over racism was not easy, but at least it was one of the beginnings and that changed the story to what we know today. Although we know that racism is not totally eradicated, there are still people who believe in the superiority of the white race.

Todo comienza con Bernard Garrett, quien comienza en el negocio inmobiliario con el sueño de poder sacar su familia adelante, a pesar de la diferente entre los negros y blancos que existían marcadamente en la época de los años 60 en Estados Unidos. Bernard se une con Joe Morris en el mundo de los bancos, donde empiezan a surgir serios problemas para ellos, ya que una persona negra no podía comprar una empresa, un banco e incluso un edificio, pero estos dos, con la ayuda de Matt Steiner, un joven blanco, logran cumplir sus objetivos. Cuando todo parece marchar bien, surge el drama, dándole un giro a la historia, porque sabemos que el inicio de la lucha sobre el racismo no fue fácil, pero al menos fue uno de los inicios y que cambio la historia a lo que conocemos actualmente. Aunque buenos sabemos que el racismo no está erradicado totalmente, aún existen personas que creen en la superioridad de la raza blanca.

Garrett is quite ingenious with mathematics, apparently something he had from a very young age, the aspiration to do great things. A person who is quite sure of what he thinks, but doubts people a lot and all this is due to the inequality he lived since they were a child. On the other hand, Joe is a rich man who already has a fortune due to his business, who has a different vision than Bernard, but these two leave their differences aside to form this ingenious plan so that both black and white people have the same opportunities, regardless of the color of their skin. On the other hand, we have the character of Steiner, a young white man, who is not really a racist, he just wants to work to, as it were, get ahead. A young man who is quite intelligent, who together with the two main characters, form a great trio.

Garrett es bastante ingenioso con las matemáticas, al parecer algo que tenía desde muy joven, la aspiración de hacer grandes cosas. Una persona que es bastante seguro de lo que piensa, pero duda mucho de las personas y todo esto se debe a la desigualdad que vivió desde que eran un niño. Por otro lado, Joe es un hombre rico que ya tiene una fortuna debido a sus negocios, que tiene una visión distinta a Bernard, pero estos dos dejan sus diferencias a un lado para formar este plan ingenioso para que tanto las personas blancas y negras tengan las mismas oportunidades, sin importar el color de su piel. Por otro lado, tenemos al personaje de Steiner, un joven blanco, quien la verdad no es racista, simplemente quiere trabajar para, como quien dice, salir adelante. Un joven que es bastante inteligente, quien junto a los dos personajes principales, formar una gran tripleta.

This movie has a story that as I said at the beginning is inspiring, based on real facts, which is what I like the most, that leaves us a great message about the fight for racism and equality. The plot seems to me good, even very funny, not boring at all and the best thing is that the story is very fluid and not slow at all, even though The Banker has a duration of two hours. Nothing more to say, I thought the story was magnificent.

Esta película tiene una historia que como dije al principio es inspiradora, basada en hechos reales, que es lo que más me gusta, que nos deja un gran mensaje sobre la lucha por el racismo y la igualdad. La trama me parece buena, incluso muy divertida, nada aburrida y lo mejor que es la historia muy fluida y para nada es lenta, a pesar de que The Banker tiene una duración de dos horas. Nada más que decir, que la historia me pareció magnífica.

Another reason that caught my attention was because of the cast, the truth is that the cast is at the level of the film, with great performances. Where Anthony Mackie as Bernard Garrett, Samuel L. Jackson as Joe Morris and Nicholas Hoult as Matt Steiner stand out, where these three do a magnificent job with their characters. Even at the beginning I thought that Nicholas would have a less relevant participation in the story, but little by little he became more important in this story, at first I thought he would be just a secondary character. We also have other performances that are very good, but have less screen presence, but still stand out.

Otra de las razones que me llamó la atención esta película fue por el cast, la verdad es que el reparto está al nivel de la película, con grandes actuaciones. Donde destacan Anthony Mackie como Bernard Garrett, Samuel L. Jackson como Joe Morris y Nicholas Hoult como Matt Steiner, donde estos tres hacen un magnífico trabajo con sus personajes. Incluso al inicio pensé que Nicholas tendrían una participación menos relevante dentro de la historia, pero poco a poco fue tomando más importancia su participación dentro de esta historia, al principio pensé que sería tan solo un personaje más secundario. También tenemos otras actuaciones que son muy buenas, pero tiene menos presencia en pantalla, pero aun así destacan.

The cinematography of this film seems to me to be a work of art, where there are scenes that are shown in black and white to take us deeper into the era in which the story of the film The Banker took place. Really this film was very well directed, scenes that I really liked and shots that caught my attention powerfully. A superlative job by cinematographer George Nolfi. The soundtrack is at the level of the film, with quite cheerful music and it could not be this way, because beyond the fact that this production is a drama, it also has very cheerful moments, with music from the sixties that must be highlighted and that submerge us into the story of The Banker.

La fotografía de esta película me parece que es una obra de arte, donde hay escenas que se muestran a blanco y negro para adentrarnos más en la época en la que se desarrolló la historia de la película El Banquero. Realmente esta película fue muy bien dirigida, escenas que realmente me gustaron y planos de tomas que me llamaron poderosamente la atención. Un trabajo superlativo del cineasta George Nolfi. La banda sonora está al nivel de la película, con música bastante alegre y es que no podría ser de esta manera, ya que más allá de que esta producción sea un drama, también tiene momentos muy alegres, con músicas de los sesenta que hay que destacar y que nos sumergen dentro de la historia de The Banker.

The Banker is really an excellent movie, a very good production, an inspiring story, a very genuine plot, a masterful direction and performances, where we must highlight Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson, where Samuel really stood out the most with his character. We also can't fail to mention Nicholas Hoult who never does a bad job with his characters, at least from the movies I have seen. The cinematography and soundtrack of The Banker is a true work of art. I recommend the movie with my eyes closed, where I considered it a 10/10.

El Banquero es realmente una excelente película, una muy buena producción, una historia inspiradora, una trama muy genuina, una dirección y actuaciones magistrales, donde hay que destacar a Anthony Mackie y Samuel L. Jackson, donde Samuel realmente fue el que más destacó con su personaje. También no podemos dejar de mencionar a Nicholas Hoult que nunca hace un mal trabajo con sus personajes, al menos de las películas que he visto. La fotografía y la banda sonora de The Banker es una verdadera obra de arte. La película se las recomiendo con los ojos cerrados, donde consideró que es un 10/10.
