Porco Rosso: A movie about redemption

Despite the fact that Studio Ghibli is one of the most memorable, iconic and biggest animation studios in the film industry, I personally have seen very few series made under their label, in fact, not even five films I have seen, among which are: Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro, the latter being the only one of the three films of this studio that I have never finished watching because when I started watching it many years ago I didn't like it and stopped watching it, but I think that, after 10 years, I have to give this film a chance and watch it again. Until recently those three were the only films of Studio Ghibli, even though there are many that catch my attention to see, so I decided to start watching those films of this studio that I have not yet seen and after several years I started by one that looked interesting, that film was: Porco Rosso, which is a story about an anthropomorphic pig whose profession is to be a pilot, what most caught my attention of this film is that it was the only character in this film that had the appearance of an animal, while the other characters were normal humans, so I had the suspicion that it was about some curse, although perhaps the appearance of this character is just something symbolic given the events of this film.

The story focuses on this anthropomorphic pig which was previously a military man who piloted a plane, along with his companions, but after several years and when he got his pig appearance, he has become a quite famous bounty hunter in his area, so much so that other bounty hunters and pirates want to kill him. Basically this is the main axis of the story. At a certain point in the story we are shown that this pig previously had a human appearance and also shows us that when he was a military pilot he was in charge of a group of other military pilots, which, because Porco Rosso was a rather individualistic character who prefers to do things by himself, caused the death of all his companions, this is how he got the appearance of a pig. So throughout the film, he unwittingly finds a way to redeem himself for his past mistakes.

Porco Rosso one of the symbolisms this film has about the pig-like appearance of the protagonist is that by acting so inconsiderately to his fellow soldiers, Porco Rosso sees himself as a pig incapable of getting love, understanding or affection from another person, as he is still to blame for all the mistakes he has made in the past. Something that torments him a lot. Gina is a very important character in this story, as she is Porco Rosso's love interest, because although they both know they have love for each other, it is the protagonist's mistakes that makes him not want to fully accept what Gina is offering him and it is not until Porco Rosso meets a little girl who, besides helping him build a new plane, also helps him to see himself as a real person, leaving that pig-like appearance.

This film is not only beautiful in its story, but the whole artistic aspect that this film offers is worthy of being made by one of the best animation studios out there, also sonically is a film that manages to convey a huge amount of feelings that along with what is seen on screen, makes the experience of watching this film is something very sentimental and deep.

A pesar de que Studio Ghibli es uno de los estudios de animación más memorables, icónicos y grandes de la industria del cine, yo personalmente he visto muy pocas series hechas bajo su sello, de hecho, no llegan ni a cinco las películas que he visto, entre las que se encuentran: El Viaje de Chihiro, El Increíble Castillo Vagabundo y Mi Vecino Totoro, siendo esta ultima la única de las tres películas de este estudio que nunca he terminado de ver ya que cuando la empecé a ver hace ya bastantes años no me estaba gustando y la deje de mirar, pero creo que, luego de 10 años, tengo que darle una oportunidad a esta película y verla nuevamente. Hasta hace poco esas tres eran las únicas películas del Studio Ghibli, a pesar de que hay muchas que me llaman la atención por ver, por lo que decidí empezar a ver aquellas películas de este estudio que aún no he visto y luego de varios años empecé por una que se veía interesante, esa película era: Porco Rosso, la cual es una historia sobre un cerdo antropomórfico cuyo profesión es ser piloto, lo que más me llamaba la atención de esta película es que era el único personaje de esta película que tenía apariencia de animal, mientras que los demás personajes eran humanos normales, por lo que tenía la sospecha de que se trataba de alguna maldición, aunque quizás la apariencia de este personaje sea tan solo algo simbólico dado los acontecimientos de esta película.

La historia se centra en este cerdo antropomórfico el cual anteriormente era un militar que pilotaba un avión, junto a sus compañeros, pero luego de varios años y cuando obtuvo su apariencia de cerdo, se ha convertido en un cazarrecompensa bastante famoso en su zona, tanto así que otros cazarrecompensas y piratas quieren acabar con él. Básicamente esta es el eje principal de la historia. En cierto momento de la historia se nos muestra que este cerdo anteriormente tenía una apariencia humana y también nos muestra que cuando era piloto militar era el encargando de un grupo de otros pilotos militares, los cuales, producto de que Porco Rosso era una personaje bastante individualista y que prefiera hacer las cosas por sí mismo, provoco la muerte de todos sus compañeros, de esta forma es que obtuvo la apariencia de cerdo. Por lo que durante toda la película, sin querer encuentra la forma en como redimirse ante sus errores del pasado.

Porco Rosso uno de los simbolismos que tiene esta película sobre la apariencia de cerdo del protagonista es que al actuar tan desconsideradamente con sus compañeros militares, Porco Rosso se ve a sí mismo como un cerdo incapaz de obtener amor, comprensión o cariño de otra persona, ya que aún tiene la culpa de todos los errores que ha cometido en el pasado. Algo que lo atormenta muchísimo. Gina es un personaje muy importante en esta historia, ya que es el interés amoroso de Porco Rosso, ya que aunque los dos saben que se tienen amor entre sí, son los errores del protagonista que hace que no quiera aceptar al completo lo que Gina le está ofreciendo y no es hasta que Porco Rosso conoce a una pequeña joven que, además de ayudarlo a construir un nuevo avión, también lo ayuda a verse a sí mismo como una persona de verdad, dejando esa apariencia de cerdo.

Esta película no solo es hermosa en su historia, sino que todo el aspecto artístico que ofrece esta película es digna de estar hecha por uno de los mejores estudios de animación que hay, igualmente sonoramente es una película que logra transmitir una enorme cantidad de sentimientos que junto con lo visto en pantalla, hace que la experiencia al ver esta película sea algo muy sentimental y profundo.
