Yes, the sequel that Tim Burton has been promising us for almost 40 years, and I have a head full of things I need to tell you about... you know I've been a die-hard fan of Burton's weird and cool style since I was a little kid, and seeing how he tries to revive one of his most iconic characters is like meeting again with an old friend, just as crazy and quirky as ever... this movie is like a trip back in time for those of us who grew up with the original, but it's also a super bold attempt to bring the story to these modern times... Let's get to the point: Tim Burton, the master of the macabre and the bizarre, you can tell he wanted to pay homage to the original Beetlejuice, but also to modernize the vibe for the new generations...

After almost four decades, finding the balance between the handmade charm of the 80's and the digital aesthetics of today is not easy, although I'm not going to spoil anything, I'll tell you that the movie does a pretty good job mixing those two worlds, there are moments where you feel that unmistakable magic of Burton, with weird shadows and visual details that remind you of his first movies, but in others, it relies more on digital effects, which yes, are impressive, but sometimes they lack that warm and real vibe of the practical effects of the original.

But one of the great highlights of the film is how he opens the doors to the world of the dead again, Burton takes us to walk through corridors that never end, mysterious doors and corners full of details that expand the universe of the first film.... I was completely taken in by this creepy yet fascinating subway world, where every scene has something that visually catches your attention: whether it's an exaggerated set or a crazy make-up, everyone in the costume team managed to capture the essence of the original and at the same time gave a new energy to every scene.

Quiero contarles, después de bastante jaja, mis opiniones sobre la película Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.. ¡Sí, la secuela que Tim Burton nos viene prometiendo por casi 40 años, y tengo la cabeza llena de cosas que necesito contarles.. ustedes saben que yo soy fan a morir del estilo raro y genial de Burton desde que era chiquito, y ver cómo trata de revivir a uno de sus personajes más icónicos es como reencontrarte con un viejo amigo, igual de loco y extravagante que siempre.. esta peli es como un viaje en el tiempo para los que crecimos con la original, pero también es un intento súper audaz de traer la historia a estos tiempos modernos.. Vamos a lo importante: Tim Burton, el maestro de lo macabro y lo bizarro, se nota que quiso hacerle un homenaje a la Beetlejuice original, pero también modernizar la onda para las nuevas generaciones..

Después de casi cuatro décadas, encontrar el equilibrio entre el encanto hecho a mano de los 80 y la estética digital de ahora no es nada fácil, aunque no les voy a spoilear nada, les adelanto que la peli hace un trabajo bastante bueno mezclando esos dos mundos, hay momentos donde sientes esa magia inconfundible de Burton, con sombras raras y detalles visuales que te recuerdan a sus primeras pelis, pero en otros, se apoya más en efectos digitales, que sí, son impresionantes, pero a veces les falta esa onda cálida y real de los efectos prácticos de la original.

Pero uno de los grandes puntazos de la peli es cómo nos abre de nuevo las puertas al mundo de los muertos, Burton nos lleva a recorrer pasillos que no terminan nunca, puertas misteriosas y rinconcitos llenos de detalles que expanden el universo de la primera peli.. a mí me atrapó por completo este mundo subterráneo, espeluznante pero a la vez fascinante, donde cada escena tiene algo que te llama la atención visualmente: ya sea un decorado exagerado o un maquillaje que te deja loco, todos en el equipo de vestuario lograron capturar la esencia de la original y al mismo tiempo le dieron una energía nueva a cada escena.

Let's talk about the cast, my people... because let's see, what would Beetlejuice be without those characters that stick in your head? First of all, Winona Ryder is back! Let me tell you, it's like no time has passed! If you've seen her in Stranger Things, you know the natural and magnetic vibe she has in front of the camera... in this movie, her performance feels just as authentic and charming as ever, it's as if the character of Lydia never left her, but was just there, quietly, waiting for the right moment to show up again... her return is a gift for all of us who love the original movie, simple as that... then we have Michael Keaton, again as Beetlejuice... I confess I had my doubts at first, huh?

After so many years, would he be able to bring back that energy and chaotic charisma of the character? At the beginning, I saw him a bit forced, as if he was fighting against his own legend... but, as the movie progresses, wham, little by little he goes back to being Beetlejuice with that uncontrolled character that made him an icon... obviously, he doesn't have the same energy he had 36 years ago (who would have?), but he manages to transmit that mischievous and mocking vibe we all remember. And Jenna Ortega... this is where the movie makes a smart move... her character is like a bridge between the nostalgia of the past and the vibe of attracting new people, young people, not that she replaces Lydia, not at all, but she does have a similar air, with that dark and rebellious charisma that Ortega knows how to handle so well... she feels super comfortable in the world of Beetlejuice, and although she doesn't steal the whole show, her role is solid and gives a fresh touch to the story.

But now, let's talk about the script, because this is where it gets different, while the original movie had a simple, more restrained plot, this sequel goes for a bigger story, with several side stories.. on the one hand, this makes the sequel a little bit more complex. on the one hand, this makes the movie have more content and prevents it from feeling like a copy of the first one, but, on the other hand, some of these side stories feel rushed, as if they didn't have enough time to develop well... sometimes, it seems like the movie wants to cover too many ideas at once, and that can make the main story lose the thread a little bit, don't you think? To me, personally, I think a more focused story would have had a stronger emotional impact.

Hablemos del elenco, mi gente.. porque a ver, ¿qué sería de Beetlejuice sin esos personajes que se te quedan grabados en la cabeza? Primero que nada, ¡Winona Ryder está de vuelta! déjenme decirles, ¡es como si el tiempo no hubiera pasado! Si la han visto en Stranger Things, ya saben la onda natural y magnética que tiene frente a la cámara.. en esta peli, su actuación se siente igual de auténtica y encantadora que siempre, es como si el personaje de Lydia nunca la hubiera dejado, sino que simplemente estuvo ahí, tranqui, esperando el momento justo para volver a aparecer.. su regreso es un regalo para todos los que amamos la peli original, así de simple.. después tenemos a Michael Keaton, otra vez como Beetlejuice.. les confieso que al principio tenía mis dudas, ¿eh?

Después de tantos años, ¿sería capaz de volver a sacar esa energía y ese carisma caótico del personaje? Al principio, lo vi un poco como forzado, como si estuviera luchando contra su propia leyenda.. pero, a medida que la peli avanza, ¡pum!, poco a poco vuelve a ser Beetlejuice con ese descontrol que lo hizo un ícono.. obvio, no tiene la misma energía que hace 36 años (¿quién la tendría?), pero sí logra transmitir esa vibra traviesa y burlona que todos recordamos. Y Jenna Ortega… aquí es donde la peli se te tira una jugada inteligente.. su personaje es como un puente entre la nostalgia del pasado y la onda de atraer a gente nueva, a la gente joven, no es que reemplace a Lydia, para nada, pero sí tiene un aire parecido, con ese carisma oscuro y rebelde que Ortega sabe manejar tan bien.. se siente súper cómoda en el mundo de Beetlejuice, y aunque no se roba todo el show, su papel está sólido y le da un toque fresco a la historia.

Pero ahora, hablemos del guion, porque aquí es donde la cosa se pone diferente, mientras que la peli original tenía una trama sencilla, más contenida, esta secuela se va por una historia más grande, con varias historias secundarias.. por un lado, esto hace que la peli tenga más contenido y evita que se sienta como una copia de la primera, pero, por otro lado, algunas de estas historias secundarias se sienten como apuradas, como si no tuvieran suficiente tiempo para desarrollarse bien.. a veces, parece que la peli quiere abarcar demasiadas ideas a la vez, y eso puede hacer que la historia principal pierda un poco el hilo, ¿no creen? A mí, personalmente, creo que una historia más enfocada habría tenido un impacto emocional más fuerte.

One thing that caught my attention is how this new Beetlejuice was 'softened' to fit with the times of today, in the original movie, the guy was a troublemaker, in this sequel, Burton lowered a touch to that facet, he made him less stalker and more like a playful clown... there I have my doubts. On the one hand, I understand that they want to connect with the current audience, obviously, but, on the other hand, removing a little of that uncontrolled madness from the character, kind of takes away a little of his essence, not that he is a saint now, not at all, but you can notice the change in how he behaves. And visually, the movie mixes practical effects with stop motion and CGI, all together! that mix of styles creates a crazy visual experience, that keeps alive Burton's handmade vibe... the practical effects give it that real, tangible touch, that we miss so much in today's movies, and the stop motion scenes are like a nod to classic animation, but, let's see, they don't always integrate perfectly.

Some scenes reminded me more of a sketch of those famous animated fights, than the style of The Corpse Bride, so I tell you... anyway, the movie gives us a couple of memorable moments that make you remember the magic of the original, that yes... my expectations before, through the roof! I wanted this movie to take me back to that magical feeling I had when I saw the first one as a kid, but I was also afraid that it would be just cheap nostalgia, without soul... the truth is that the experience was a mix of both things, you know? There were moments when I was hooked, excited, and others when the movie felt a bit saturated or like I didn't know what was going on, it was like a roller coaster of emotions, people: fun, amazement, but also a little bit of frustration, and disappointment, what am I going to lie to you?

Una cosa que me llamó la atención es cómo a este nuevo Beetlejuice como que lo 'suavizaron' para que encaje con los tiempos de ahora, en la peli original, el tipo era problemático, en esta secuela, Burton le bajó un toque a esa faceta, lo hizo menos acosador y más como un payaso juguetón.. ahí tengo mis dudas. Por un lado, entiendo que quieran conectar con el público actual, obvio, pero, por otro lado, quitarle un poco de esa locura descontrolada al personaje, como que le saca un poco de su esencia, no es que ahora sea un santo, ¡para nada!, pero se nota el cambio en cómo se comporta. Y en lo visual, la peli mezcla efectos prácticos con stop motion y CGI, ¡todo junto! esa mezcla de estilos crea una experiencia visual loca, que mantiene viva la onda artesanal de Burton.. los efectos prácticos le dan ese toque real, tangible, que tanto extrañamos en las pelis de ahora, y las escenas en stop motion son como un guiño a la animación clásica, pero, a ver, no siempre se integran perfecto.

Algunas escenas me hicieron acordar más a un sketch de esos de peleas de famosos animados, que al estilo de El cadáver de la novia, así te digo.. igual, la peli nos regala un par de momentos memorables que te hacen recordar la magia de la original, eso sí.. mis expectativas antes, ¡por las nubes! Quería que esta peli me llevara de vuelta a esa sensación mágica que tuve cuando vi la primera de pibe, pero también tenía miedo de que fuera solo nostalgia barata, sin alma.. la verdad es que la experiencia fue una mezcla de las dos cosas, ¿saben? Hubo momentos en los que quedé enganchado, emocionado, y otros en los que la peli se notaba un toque saturada o como que no sabía bien qué onda, fue como una montaña rusa de emociones, gente: diversión, asombro, pero también un poquito de frustración, y decepción para qué les voy a mentir.

So, is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice worth it or not? Does it stand on its own or does it depend too much on the vibe of the original? for me, it's a bit of both, huh? Clearly, nostalgia is a super important ingredient, but you can also see that they tried to make the world of Beetlejuice grow and bring something new, it's not always perfect, but at least they did their best, I'll give it a 7.5/10, it's an entertaining movie, with a lot of cool and visually wow moments, but it also has its little things with the rhythm and some side stories that are a bit weak... it's not the masterpiece I expected, but it's not a mess either, not at all! It's a worthy return to a universe that's still just as weird, fun and chaotic as we remembered it... Now I want to know what you guys think: do you think this sequel lived up to the classic or fell short? Entonces, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice vale la pena o no? ¿Se defiende solita o depende demasiado de la onda de la original? para mí, es un poco de las dos, ¿eh? Claramente, la nostalgia es un ingrediente súper importante, pero también se nota que intentaron hacer crecer el mundo de Beetlejuice y traer algo nuevo, no siempre les sale perfecto, pero al menos se mandaron con ganas, eso hay que reconocerlo.. le voy a dar un 7.5/10, es una peli entretenida, con mucha onda y momentos visualmente ¡wow!, pero también tiene sus cositas con el ritmo y algunas historias secundarias que quedan ahí medio flojas.. no es la obra maestra que esperaba, pero tampoco es un bodrio, ¡para nada! Es un regreso digno a un universo que sigue siendo igual de raro, divertido y caótico que como lo recordábamos.. Ahora quiero saber qué piensan ustedes: ¿creen que esta secuela estuvo a la altura del clásico o se quedó corta? ¿Les emocionó volver a ver a estos personajes o creen que Hollywood debería dejar de revivir pelis viejas?
