¡Hola, Hive! ✨

Llego octubre y con eso evidentemente llegó Halloween. Aunque en mi país no exista esa celebración como tal la verdad es que es imposible no ver algún sitio decorado con la temática y por supuesto el montón de películas y series ambientadas en esa fecha o con esa temática. Cuando era una niña recuerdo que enDisney Channel pasaban un montón de películas pero hubo una que me cautivó para siempre, evidentemente fue El Extraño Mundo de Jack o Pesadilla antes de navidad. Cuando la vi me enamoré del estilo de animación de stop motion, de Tim Burton y por supuesto de la historia, que vuelvo a ver cada vez que puedo, especialmente en este mes (y en diciembre también funciona). Así que en este post les comparto mi opinión.

October arrived and with that obviously came Halloween. Although in my country there is no such celebration, the truth is that it is impossible not to see some place decorated with the theme and of course the many films and series set on that date or with that theme. When I was a little girl I remember that the Disney Channel showed a lot of movies but there was one that captivated me forever, obviously it was Nightmare Before Christmas. When I saw it I fell in love with the stop motion animation style, Tim Burton and of course the story, which I still rewatch every time I can, especially this month (and it works in December too). So in this post I’ll share my opinion with you.

Sinopsis | Synopsis

Jack Skellington, el grandioso rey de las calabazas, el rey de el pueblo de Halloween a quien todos respetan y temen por su enorme talento y liderazgo. Todos los años Jack junto a sus seguidores planifican el maravilloso día de Halloween donde él año tras año mejora sus trucos que son cada vez más impresionantes. Ese año no fue la excepción, los deslumbró a todos. Pero Jack luego de incontables años siendo el rey del Halloween haciendo lo mismo una y otra vez ya a este punto se encuentra cansado de hacer lo mismo todo el tiempo, ha perdido su motivación.

Jack Skellington, the great king of pumpkins, the king of the Halloween town whom everyone respects and fears for his enormous talent and leadership. Every year Jack along with his followers plan the wonderful Halloween day where year after year he improves his tricks that are more and more impressive. That year was no exception, he dazzled them all. But Jack after countless years of being the king of Halloween doing the same thing over and over again, at this point he is tired of doing the same thing all the time, he has lost his motivation.

Por casualidad, o quizá no tanta, descubre un nuevo mundo donde todo es distinto a Halloween Town. Luces, risas, personas alegres por la calle, niños jugando y corriendo, regalos hermosos por doquier y nieve, mucha nieve. Era la navidad. Jack queda deslumbrado, casi inmediatamente obsesionado. Entonces toma una decisión: Él hará su propia navidad.

By chance (or maybe not by chance) he discovers a new world where everything is different from Halloween Town. Lights, laughter, happy people on the street, children playing and running, beautiful gifts everywhere and snow, a lot of snow. It was Christmas. Jack is dazzled, almost immediately obsessed. Then he makes a decision: He will make his own Christmas.

El extraño mundo de Tim Burton | The Strange world of Tim Burton

Este hombre posee una creatividad admirable aunque para nada convencional. Resulta evidente en sus obras que lo que crea tiene siempre un toque bizarro e incluso de cierto horror. Evidentemente al ver El extraño mundo de Jack notas de inmediato que no es la típica película para niños a pesar de estar dirigida a todo público. Hay personajes con intenciones dudosas, criaturas extrañas que hacen el hecho de verlas a veces algo incómodo (que no aterrador), nuestros protagonistas son un esqueleto parlante con una crisis existencial y una mujer hecha como experimento con distintas partes de diferentes mujeres (experimentos fallidos) cosidas entre sí que además resulta ser la más sensata de todos en el pueblo... Si ya con eso no te haces una idea de la imaginación algo retorcida de Burton pues no sé porqué.

This man has an admirable creativity although not at all conventional. It is evident in his works that what he creates always has a bizarre touch and even a certain creepy vibe. Obviously when you see Nightmare Before Christmas you immediately notice that it is not the typical film for children despite being aimed at all audiences. There are characters with dubious intentions, strange creatures that make seeing them sometimes uncanny (but not terrifying), our protagonists are a talking skeleton with an existential crisis and a woman made as an experiment with different parts of different women (failed experiments). sewn together who also happens to be the most reasonable of everyone in town... If that doesn't give you an idea of Burton's somewhat twisted imagination, I don't know why.

Una de las cosas que adoro es ese toque extraño, casi perturbador porque la forma de contar historias no en convencional, no son personajes que de alguna forma se sientan normales a pesar de que los problemas existenciales que llegan a enfrentar sí lo son. Es justamente esa la magia de Burton, el poder expresar cosas cotidianas de una forma totalmente alternativa. En este caso Tim se inspiró en su propio sentimiento de soledad y su fascinación por las festividades como la navidad o Halloween, así que escribió un corto poema titulado “Pesadilla antes de navidad” y así fue como con bastante desarrollo posterior de la idea creó la película del musical animado de fantasía oscura.

One of the things I adore is that strange and creepy touch, almost too weird because the way of telling stories is not conventional, there are characters who somehow feel uncanny even though the existential problems they face are completely normal. That is precisely the magic of Burton, being able to express ordinary things in a totally alternative way. In this case Tim was inspired by his own feeling of loneliness and his fascination with festivities such as Christmas or Halloween, so he wrote a short poem titled “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and that is how, with considerable further development of the idea, he created the dark fantasy animated musical film.

Sí, esta película es un musical. Como a mí toda la vida me han encantado los musicales evidentemente desde niña canto las canciones, sobretodo “El lamento de Jack” y “La canción de Sally”. Las canciones cuentan de forma resumida los aspectos más relevantes de cada parte de la historia que después se desarrollan completamente. Son exageradamente pegajosas y fáciles de aprender, además están tan bien hechas que han sido tocadas en conciertos orquestrales e incluso hay un álbum de estudio donde fueron regrabadas por artistas importantes de la época de los 00’ como Amy Lee, Marilyn Manson, Korn, entre otros.

Yes, this movie is a musical. Since I have loved musicals all my life I have obviously been singing the songs since I was a child, especially “Jack's Lament” and “Sally's Song.” The songs briefly tell the most relevant aspects of each part of the story that are then fully developed. They are extremely catchy and easy to learn, and they are so well made that they even have been played in orchestral concerts and there is even a studio album where they were rerecorded by important artists of the 00's such as Amy Lee, Marilyn Manson, Korn, among others.

Por otra parte la animación de stop motion logró consolidarse como un estilo propio gracias a esta película que fue un éxito total. Para mí fue la primera vez que vi algo del estilo y me encantaba como los personajes se movían. Luego cuando descubrí cómo eran hechos quedé maravillada del increíble trabajo que conlleva hacer este tipo de animación. Simplemente es espectacular.

On the other hand, stop motion animation managed to establish itself as its own style thanks to this film, which was a total success. For me it was the first time I saw something of the style and I loved how the characters moved. Then when I discovered how they were made, I was amazed at the incredible work that goes into making this type of animation. It's simply spectacular.

Finalmente lo cierto es que incluso con lo extraño de la historia resulta que ésta posee mensajes verdaderamente relevantes que podemos observar en las acciones de Jack y sus consecuencias que bien advertidas habían estado por Sally. Vemos un personaje que atraviesa una crisis tomando decisiones precipitadas, sin moderación, sin pensar, por lo que a pesar de ser un desarrollo simple el mensaje que transmite queda bastante claro: toda acción genera una reacción, y eres tú quien debe enfrentar esas consecuencias. Para mí esto en un mensaje sumamente importante que debe ser inculcado en niños y recordado a los adultos.

Finally, the truth is that even with the strangeness of the story, it turns out that it has truly relevant messages that we can observe in Jack's actions and their consequences that had been well warned by Sally. We see a character going through a crisis making hasty decisions, without moderation, without thinking, so despite being a simple development, the message it transmits is quite clear: every action generates a reaction, and it is you the one who must face those consequences. To me this is an extremely important message that should be instilled in children and reminded to adults.

Lo que me encanta de las películas animadas es la capacidad de transmitir ese tipo de mensajes a través de una narrativa aparentemente inofensiva sin mayor trasfondo. Quizá el mensaje no sea algo que te salta a la cara a simple vista, al menos en este caso, pero una vez que comienzas a buscarle un sentido a la historia queda bastante claro.

What I love about animated films is the ability to convey those types of messages through a seemingly harmless narrative without much background. Maybe the message is not something that jumps out at you at first glance, at least in this case, but once you start looking for meaning of the story it becomes quite clear.

Jack queda atrapado en su monotonía queriendo ir más allá, descubrir nuevas cosas y eso no está mal, pero en momentos de incertidumbre lo más sensato es sopesar todas las consecuencias de lo que queremos hacer para realmente decidir si estamos dispuestos a aceptar las consecuencias o no. Al final todo lo que hacemos nos afecta directamente a nosotros mismos, a corto, mediano y largo plazo. Jack descubre eso tarde y por eso ocurre todo aquel desastre, pero al final logra identificar la importancia de pensar antes de actuar, así como aceptar el consejo y apoyo de otros sobretodo en esas situaciones desesperadas.

Jack gets trapped in his monotony wanting to go further, discover new things and that's not bad, but in times of uncertainty the most reasonable thing is to weigh all the consequences of what we want to do to really decide if we are willing to accept the consequences or not. In the end, everything we do directly affects ourselves in the short, medium and long term. Jack discovers this late and that is why all that disaster occurs, but in the end he manages to identify the importance of thinking before acting, as well as accepting the advice and support of others, especially in those desperate situations.

La verdad esta película estrenada en 1993 a pesar de ser bastante corta en mi opinión por durar apenas 1 hora con 16 minutos nos cuenta una historia interesante, entretenida, hermosamente desarrollada con el arte de la animación y la música, con un buen mensaje y además, ideal para celebrar Halloween. Si por alguna razón no la has visto te recomiendo aprovechar que estamos en la época de lo extraño para verla.

The truth is that this film, released in 1993, despite being quite short in my opinion lasting just 1 hour and 16 minutes, tells us an interesting, entertaining story, beautifully developed with the art of animation and music, with a good message and also ideal to celebrate Halloween. If for some reason you have not seen it before, I recommend taking advantage of the fact that we are in that spooky time of the year to watch it.

A truly great movie done by a true movie genius. Then bringing in Danny Elfman to compose all the music and voice Jack in all his songs was another brilliant move. A true classic! Great post!

Hola amiga, este es le mejor mes para ver películas de terror y esta que nos compartes es muy buena, tuve la oportunidad de verla varias veces en la tv y es increíble, además esa combinación entre la navidad y el halloween es perfecta, la cual permite crear una gran historia y para la fecha que fue estrenada segura siendo un gran clásico. Gracias por compartirlo con nosotro.

Así son las historias de Tim Borton, solo lo sé por referencias y lo confirmo con la descripción de esta historia. Nunca he visto sus películas, pero al leer tu reseña despierta mi interés. Han pasado varias veces una que se llama "El cadaver de la novia", la quiero ver.

Esto llamó mi atención:

nuestros protagonistas son un esqueleto parlante con una crisis existencial y una mujer hecha como experimento con distintas partes de diferentes mujeres (experimentos fallidos) cosidas entre sí que además resulta ser la más sensata de todos en el pueblo.

Voy a buscar la película, me pareció interesante, saludos.

Todas sus historias son raras pero al final transmiten un mensaje importante. Esta peli y El Cadáver de la Novia son sus obras más conocidas y realmente recomiendo al 100 % ambas. Son entretenidas, con tramas interesantes muy bien desarrolladas y por supuesto, son raritas.

Dios mío, no fue hasta el año pasado que vi esta película y no me arrepiento. Aunque no celebre Halloween siempre aprovecho octubre para pasearme por alguna trama.
