However, it is important to note that to enjoy “Twisters” and understand its plot it is not necessary to have seen “Twister” before, since this movie works more as an update and not as a sequel, its characters do not maintain any relation with the original movie. Cuando me enteré que estaba en camino, no pude evitar recordar aquel clásico de 1996, “Twister” en esa oportunidad me dejo fascinada por la adrenalina y el espectáculo visual que ofrecía. Ahora, casi tres décadas después, se nos presentan los nuevos cazatormentas para sumergirnos en un torbellino de acción, adrenalina y drama, con una mezcla de nostalgia y tecnología de punta. Sin embargo, es importante comentarles que para disfrutar de “Twisters” y comprender su trama no necesaria haber visto antes “Twister”, ya que esta película funciona más como una actualización y no como secuela, sus personajes no mantienen ninguna relación con la película original. Aclarado este punto continuemos.

Twisters lanzada en 2024 y dirigida por Lee Isaac Chung, nos presenta una historia en donde promete revivir la emoción de enfrentarse a uno de los fenómenos más impredecibles de la naturaleza: “los tornados”. Y es, aquí donde nos hacemos la gran pregunta. ¿logró arrastrarnos al ojo de la tormenta? O se quedó en un simple espectáculo de viento y destrucción. Permítanme adelantarles un pequeño spoiler: hay escenas que los harán agarrarse del asiento. Y otras que quizás los dejen con ganas de más. Así que, sigan leyendo para descubrir ¿por qué?

Synopsis: “Twisters” introduces us to the life of Kate Coope (played by actress Daisy Edgar-Jones) a brilliant young meteorologist who has dedicated her life to the study of these phenomena. She is tormented, after a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years, which has led her to stay away from storms. She now studies the patterns comfortably and safely in laboratories in New York City. Her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) lures her back to the open plains to test an innovative new tracking system. In her path crosses Tyler Owens (played by actor Glen Powell), a charming and reckless social media superstar who is dedicated to chasing storms and documenting their encounters for his thousands of followers with his quirky and eccentric gear, his motto, the more dangerous, the better. Initially, his motivations seem to be driven solely by adrenaline and fame, which creates some friction with the cautious and reserved scientist Kate. However, as the film progresses, we see how their worlds collide and somehow complement each other in the quest to understand and survive the increasing intensity of the storms..

If in 1996 Twister impressed us with flying cows and smashed houses, in Twisters 2024, prepare to be blown away. The visual representation of these natural monsters is absolutely stunning. The way they move, the destruction they cause, the details of flying debris, it's an experience that makes you feel like you're in the eye of the storm. There are scenes that are pure visual and sound adrenaline. Definitely, the visual effects get a standing ovation.

Here's a little spoiler (sorry about that). There is one scene in particular where the main characters are trapped in a basement while an F5 tornado sweeps through the area. This moment, fraught with tension and vulnerability, is a reminder of how small we are in the face of the immensity of nature. For me, this was one of the most powerful scenes in the film.

On the other hand, I loved how the film subtly addresses the impact of climate change. Although it is not a central theme, it serves as a background to remind us that these extreme phenomena are not science fiction, but an increasingly present reality.

If there is one thing to give a “but” to, it would be certain lines of dialogue, they feel forced, and predictable. Although the script tries to balance the action with emotional moments. There were a couple of scenes where I wished the characters had more emotional depth. But in truth, this detail is not relevant.

Si en 1996 Twister nos impresionó con vacas voladoras y casas destrozadas, en Twisters 2024, prepárense para quedarse boquiabiertos. La representación visual de estos monstruos naturales es absolutamente asombrosa. La forma en que se mueven, la destrucción que causan, los detalles de los escombros volando, es una experiencia que te hace sentir en el ojo de la tormenta. Hay escenas que son pura adrenalina visual y sonora. Definitivamente, los efectos visuales se llevan una ovación.

Ahí les va un pequeño spoiler (perdón por eso). Hay una escena en particular donde los protagonistas quedan atrapados en un sótano mientras un tornado de categoría F5 arrasa el área. Este momento, cargado de tensión y vulnerabilidad, es un recordatorio de cuán pequeños somos frente a la inmensidad de la naturaleza. Para mí, esta fue una de las escenas más impactantes de la película.

Por otro lado, me encantó cómo la película aborda de forma sutil el impacto del cambio climático. A pesar que no es un tema central, sirve como trasfondo para recordarnos que estos fenómenos extremos no son ciencia ficción, sino una realidad cada vez más presente.

Si hay algo, a que ponerle un “pero” seria a ciertas líneas del diálogo, se sienten forzadas, y predecibles. Aunque el guion intenta equilibrar la acción con momentos emotivos. Hubo un par de escenas donde deseé que los personajes tuvieran mayor profundidad emocional. Pero en verdad este detalle, no es relevante.

“Twisters” could be described as a cinematic experience that grabs you with its pulse-pounding action and stunning visuals. It's a well-balanced mix of action, drama and a touch of romance, thus achieving a remarkable update (in my opinion) of the original premise.

You may ask, do you recommend it? Absolutely! If you're a fan of disaster movies or just looking for a dose of excitement accompanied by spectacular special effects, “Twisters” has to be on your list, yes or yes.
