Wolf Man - Movie Review [ES - EN]

El pasado mes de enero se estrenó "Wolf Man", primer film del año producido por "Blumhouse Productions" que trae nuevamente a la gran pantalla la famosa historia de terror sobre El Hombre Lobo; enfocado en esta oportunidad en una época actual en dónde un padre de familia, "Blake Lovell", deberá regresar específicamente a la zona boscosa de Oregón, para visitar la cabaña en dónde vivió en su juventud con su padre que para ese momento se encuentra desaparecido y dado por muerto; Blake junto a su esposa y pequeña hija deciden realizar un viaje familiar que se convertirá en una experiencia terrorífica cuando deban enfrentar una leyenda mortal que reside en el bosque y que está dispuesta a atacar a quien sea.

Leigh Whannell fue el elegido para dirigir y co escribir el guion de esta nueva película basada en un "Clásico Monstruo"; está es la segunda vez que este director es parte de un remake sobre alguno de estos personajes, ya que en el 2020 dirigió y escribió el film "The Invisible Man", una excelente producción que une muy bien el terror y la ciencia ficción lo cual actualizó a esa gran historia; posiblemente eso facilitó la decisión de traerlo para liderar este proyecto, aunque la realidad es que su elección fue debido a que el director Derek Cianfrance abandonó dicho film. Personalmente, creo que este es el trabajo menos convincente de Whannell; este es un film con un ritmo muy acelerado, con una adecuada dirección con respecto al suspenso y tensión en ciertas escenas de los cortos dos primeros actos, pero al momento de adentrar en el extenso tercer y final acto, creo que las revelaciones de la criatura y la poca tensión, hace que el impacto no sea el mejor lo cual creó que lo predecible de la historia, también afecta al desarrollo de muchas escenas.

El guion es muy simple aunque me gustó que exista el respeto a la base de estas historias, primeramente el suspenso de la criatura, la obsesión del hombre por descubrir y atrapar a lo desconocido así se ponga en peligro la vida propia y la de otros, la relación de padre e hijo, así como el interés amoroso lo cual siempre he creído que es importante para que exista la disyuntiva entre lo animal y lo humano; otro tema que me pareció adecuado es que exista una explicación o referencia sobre lo que sucederá en la historia, esto es algo que mayoritariamente no aprecio mucho, pero está vez no tuve ningún problema y hasta puedo decir que me hizo recordar alguna que otra película de M. Night Shyamalan en dónde cualquier información puede ayudar o engañar al espectador; lo que no le gustó del guion es lo poco dramático de la historia, como dije anteriormente, sus dos primeros actos aunque ponen en contexto la vida del protagonista, la realidad es que no existe ninguna conexión o química entre los personajes y eso afecta mucho al desarrollo del film.

Leigh Whannell was chosen to direct and co-write the script of this new movie based on a "Classic Monster"; this is the second time that this director is part of a remake about one of these characters, since in 2020 he directed and wrote the film "The Invisible Man", an excellent production that unites very well horror and science fiction which updated that great story; possibly that facilitated the decision to bring him to lead this project, although the reality is that his choice was due to the fact that the director Derek Cianfrance abandoned that film. Personally, I think this is Whannell's least compelling work; this is a very fast paced film, with adequate direction with respect to suspense and tension in certain scenes of the short first two acts, but as we get into the extended third and final act, I think the creature revelations and little tension, makes the impact not the best which created that the predictability of the story, also affects the development of many scenes.

The script is very simple although I liked that there is respect for the basis of these stories, first of all the suspense of the creature, the obsession of man to discover and catch the unknown even if it endangers his own life and the lives of others, the relationship between father and son, as well as the love interest which I have always believed is important for there to be a dilemma between the animal and the human; another issue that I thought was appropriate is that there is an explanation or reference to what will happen in the story, this is something that mostly I do not appreciate much, but this time I had no problem and I can even say that it reminded me of some other movie of M. Night Shyamalan where any information can help or deceive the viewer; what I didn't like about the script is the lack of drama in the story, as I said before, its first two acts although they put in context the life of the main character, the reality is that there is no connection or chemistry between the characters and that affects a lot the development of the film.

Lógicamente, está es una película sobre transformaciones o cambios radicales,.en eso cada actor debe interpretar una versión de su personaje que en el principio está dentro de una zona de confort en dónde no se está para nada cómodo y que al momento de necesitar un cambio, eso es lo que genera la parte final del film; en eso sus protagonistas hacen lo necesario para poder ser relevantes en la historia y justamente creo que la única que alcanza ese cometido es Julia Garner como "Charlotte", quien es la esposa del Blake y que está netamente enfocada en su trabajo, pero decide tener un tiempo con su esposo e hija lo cual la llevara a convertirse en algo que ella pensaba que nunca podía lograr; no dire que su actuación es magistral, pero es ella quien lidera el extenso final lo cual me entretuvo y considero como un punto positivo de la película.

Logically, this is a film about transformations or radical changes. in that each actor must play a version of his character that at the beginning is in a comfort zone where he is not at all comfortable and when he needs a change, that is what generates the final part of the film; In that its protagonists do what is necessary to be relevant in the story and I think the only one who achieves that task is Julia Garner**_ as "Charlotte", who is Blake's wife and who is purely focused on her work, but decides to have some time with her husband and daughter which will lead her to become something she thought she could never achieve; I will not say that her performance is masterful, but it is she who leads the extensive final which entertained me and I consider as a positive point of the film.

Wolf Man es un film regular, es el típico film con un potencial enorme desde su historia con respecto a los que es un drama familiar que usa (posiblemente) la maldición del Hombre Lobo para narrar el hecho en dónde los pecados del padre, se transmitan a los hijos y en este caso, como en otros films basados en este personaje, la relación padre e hijo es importante y me hubiera gustado que ese drama en la historia se hiciera más presente lo cual se desarrolla mejor en el final cerrando de una mejor manera este film. A pesar de lo antes dicho y lo poco satisfactorio que me pareció la película, de igual manera me entretuvo, pero al final es otro film más de Blumhouse en donde parece que no existiera una necesidad de crear un producto de calidad, sino un producto para generar cierta cantidad de dinero y nada más.

Wolf Man is a regular film, it is the typical film with a huge potential from its story with respect to what is a family drama that uses (possibly) the curse of the Wolf Man to narrate the fact where the sins of the father, are transmitted to the children and in this case, as in other films based on this character, the father and son relationship is important and I would have liked that this drama in the story was more present which is better developed in the end closing in a better way this film. Despite what I said before and how unsatisfying I found the film, I was still entertained, but in the end it is just another Blumhouse film where it seems that there was no need to create a quality product, but a product to generate a certain amount of money and nothing more.
