Coincidence or marketing I do not know, it strikes me that just when the health of Pope Francis is deteriorating, Conclave, which is a psychological thriller, appears in theaters, my favorite genre that was released at the end of 2024 and I saw it recently because it was named as one of the 10 best movies of 2024 plus it received several nominations for Golden Globe awards and because two hivers made reference to this movie in their publications without having made a review, I thank @macchiata and @filoriologo who reserved spoilers.

The conclave is the meeting that all the cardinals do to choose a new pope, after the death of the predecessor or resignation, in this movie the death seemed suspicious to me and I doubted that it was of natural causes, suspicion that Thomas Lawrence the dean in charge of the organization of the Conclave also seemed to have, he is the protagonist and responsible that the rules are followed until a new pontiff is appointed.

Casualidad o marketing no lo sé, me llama la atención que justamente cuando la salud del papa Francisco está deteriorada aparezca en el cine Cónclave, que es una película de suspenso psicológico, mi género favorito que fue estrenada a finales del año 2024 y yo la vi recientemente porque fue nombrada como una de las 10 mejores películas del 2024 además recibió varias nominaciones a los premios Globo de oro y porque dos hivers hicieron referencia a esta película en sus publicaciones sin haber hecho una reseña, agradezco a @macchiata y a @filoriologo que se reservaron los spoiler.

El cónclave es la reunión que hacen todos los cardenales para escoger un nuevo papa, tras la muerte del antecesor o renuncia, en esta película la muerte me pareció sospechosa y dudaba de que fuera de causas naturales, sospecha que Thomas Lawrence el decano encargado de la organización del Cónclave también parecía tener, él es el protagonista y responsable de que se sigan las reglas hasta nombrar un nuevo pontífice.

Thomas Lawrence is the dean that every faithful Catholic wishes to exist, a man of righteousness, humble heart and who only wants to find the best to carry this great responsibility, capable of making the toughest decisions even if he is harmed. I empathize with this character because of his courage, strength and character and also because he showed himself weak in the face of situations he could not handle, breaking down and taking risky actions in search of the truth. For a moment I wished he was the one chosen as the new dad.

In the film for several days the cardinals meet behind closed doors without knowing anything of the outside world, they are in a spiritual retreat with the sole mission of voting wisely for one of them, but remember that here a lot of power and money is handled, they are elections and popularity counts, so the rumors and not be expected, the new pope must have an unblemished reputation without anything that tarnishes the foundations of religion.

Among the discussions are business and shady concessions to receive a vote in favor, which ends up discarding a favorite, but what stands out most during the plot are the moral judgments, the intimate past of a cardinal, it is here where Thomas Lawrence judges without wanting to judge and begins his existential crisis about whether he is doing well or not. After the favorite cardinals were losing votes and others came out who were noted for their spiritual work and way of thinking, I could know who would be the new pope, this character did not take me by surprise I knew he would win the election, he had already won my heart, his end surprised me a little.

Thomas Lawrence es el decano que todo fiel católico desea que exista, un hombre de recto proceder, de corazón humilde y que solo quiere encontrar el mejor para llevar esta gran responsabilidad, capaz de tomar las más duras decisiones aunque se vea perjudicado. Empatice con este personaje por su valentía, fuerza y carácter también porque se mostró débil ante situaciones que no podía manejar, quebrándose y tomando acciones arriesgadas en busca de la verdad, por un momento deseé que fuera el elegido como nuevo papá.

En la película durante varios días se reúnen los cardenales a puerta cerrada sin saber nada del mundo exterior, están en un retiro espiritual con la única misión de votar sabiamente por uno de ellos, pero recordemos que aquí se maneja mucho poder y dinero, son elecciones y la popularidad cuenta, por eso los rumores y no se hacen esperar, el nuevo papa debe tener una reputación intachable sin nada que manche las bases de la religión.

Entre las discusiones están los negocios y concesiones turbias para recibir un voto a favor, que termina por descartar un favorito, pero lo que más destaca durante la trama son los juicios morales, el pasado íntimo de un cardenal, es aquí donde Thomas Lawrence juzga sin querer juzgar y comienza su crisis existencial sobre sí lo está haciendo bien o no. Después de que los cardenales favoritos fueran perdiendo votos y salieran otros que se hicieron notar por su trabajo espiritual y forma de pensar, pude saber quién sería el nuevo papa, este personaje no me tomó por sorpresa sabía que ganaría la elección, ya se había ganado mi corazón, su final me sorprendió un poco.

Opinion

The Catholic church one of the religions with more followers in the world, should change some things and modernize, such as accepting marriage for priests, while it is true that the spiritual life requires focus and having a family takes you away from this, I am sure there will be people who will know how to balance their responsibilities and services, and should give you the option to choose an active sex life or a life of celibacy.

The end of the film seeks to have an open mind to different situations that cannot be changed, the acceptance of being, having self-esteem, because if you love and accept yourself as you are, you will love God and he will love you. I found the final message very beautiful.

As for fiction versus reality, I would like to believe that this is how the conclaves are, the cardinals are good men at heart, without pretensions, without material ambitions or power, who assume their mistakes with such nobility that only praying comforts them, it is not irony is what I saw in the movie and it would be really nice if it were so.

I felt many emotions while watching it, I was a judge and I pointed out to several cardinals of liars or little integrity, I went from loving one to being disappointed, then to that cardinal I loved him again for recognizing his faults and apologizing, I also felt bad for thinking what he was not, I felt guilt, and all these emotions were the same that transmitted me his protagonist, as I love to suffer 😂.

I learned that the Conclave are not easy, they spend days talking, voting and repeating the process until they get the majority of votes and tell each other as a group, there is a lot of tension and as humans they also have their interests. It is a good movie that I recommend watching.

Opinión

La iglesia católica una de las religiones con más seguidores en el mundo, debería cambiar algunas cosas y modernizarse, como aceptar el matrimonio de los sacerdotes, si bien es cierto que la vida espiritual requiere enfoque y al tener una familia te aparta de esto, estoy segura de que habrá personas que sabrán equilibrar sus responsabilidades y servicios, y deberían darle la opción de escoger una vida sexual activa o una vida de celibato.

El final de la película busca tener una mentalidad abierta a diferentes situaciones que no se pueden cambiar, la aceptación de ser, tener autoestima, porque si uno se quiere y se acepta tal cual es, va a querer a Dios y este te amará. Me pareció muy bonito el mensaje final.

En cuanto a la ficción versus la realidad, me gustaría creer que así son los cónclaves, los cardenales hombres buenos de corazón, sin pretensiones, sin ambiciones materiales ni de poder, que asumen sus errores con tanta nobleza que solo rezar los consuela, no es ironía es lo que vi en la película y de verdad sería muy lindo que así fuera.

Yo sentí muchas emociones mientras la veía, fui juez y señale a varios cardenales de mentirosos o poco íntegros, pasé de amar a uno a decepcionarme, luego a ese cardenal lo volví a querer por reconocer sus fallas y disculparse, también me sentí mal por pensar lo que no era, sentí culpa, y todas esas emociones fueron las mismas que me transmitieron su protagonista, como me encanta sufrir 😂.

Aprendí que el Cónclave no son fáciles, pasan días conversando, votando y repitiendo el proceso hasta obtener la mayoría de votos y decirse en grupo, hay mucha tensión y como humanos también tienen sus intereses. Es una buena película que recomiendo ver.
