MY LIBERATION NOTES REVIEW

I don't know if it's because of the age phase or the life phase that's getting tiring, but I feel like the genre of my viewing is suddenly monotonous in the slice of life zone. Enjoying shows with a leisurely yet meaningful plot that tends to relate to real life is my comfort zone these days. Just like I recently watched Summer Strike, or Eunjoo,s Room which is very relatable to the real life of many people, this time I finally watched a drama that has long been on my watching list. About two years ago, when this show aired, I immediately hype promised to watch. Because one of the actors is my favourite actor. However, I was patient to wait until the series was finished.

I've always been like that, no matter how good a drama is, if it's on going, I wait until it's over first. Do you know why? Yes, so that I can patiently hold back a desire or hold back a sense of satisfaction. Looks complicated, right? But this is one of my steps through the healing process.

This drama has 16 episodes with each episode lasting 60-80 minutes. Starting airing on 9 April to 29 May 2022, My Liberation Notes can be watched legally on Netflix,.

ORIENTATION

How do you feel as a single 30-something who is not yet financially free, whose love life is really mediocre, with a mediocre ending and a mediocre family? What freedom do you want to unlock? What anxiety would bother you the most if you were in that position?

My liberation Notes tells the story of an ordinary family of farmers and furniture entrepreneurs who have three children and are still struggling with their 30s. It's not all about financial problems, but the three of them also face their own dilemmas and feel the need to be free. Is the dilemma only felt by the three children? No! Even their parents have dilemmas about their role as parents.

The role of the mother who always feels that she is not perfect as a mother. Even though her life is very tiring because she has to divide her energy in the fields and still play the role of being in control of the household kitchen, she still wants to ensure that her three children live a comfortable life.

Meanwhile, the father in this drama is a character who is respected by his children. He has a very quiet character and harbours guilt towards his family's mediocre survival. Typical of a responsible father. All his children feel the need for approval from their father when taking big steps. A moral message about honouring one's parents that has become rare.

CHARACTERISTICS

• YEOM GI-JEONG (Lee-El)
  The first daughter who is in her late 30s and still single. Serious about her role in the office, Gi-Jeong has never been successful in her love life. In addition, Gi-Jeong also feels that there's nothing wrong with her, she's hardworking, beautiful, and not spoilt, but she does have some harsh words to say because she often has to deal with the middle child at home who often disagrees with her. Lee-El is very good at portraying Gi-Jeong who is pessimistic, but doesn't give up.

• YEOM CHANG-HEE (Lee Min-Ki)
  Yeom Chang Hee is in the category of the best character in this drama, although many people highlight and admire the youngest, but Yeom Chang0Hee who plays the middle child is my hero.

  Played well by Lee Min-Ki, Yeom Chang-Hee has his anxieties as a man in the mid-30s who is still an ordinary employee with an ordinary opinion. When many men his age can decide their own lives, Yeom Chang-Hee fulfils his role as an obedient son to his parents. She still asks for permission or opinions from her father whom she respects. Her anxiety to advance economically, her anxiety as the only boy and longing for an older brother, the way she tries and works hard to get good press in her office, also, her sincerity every time she falls in love and is underestimated, explodes into Yeom Chang-Hee who seems to push or demand and talk too much as if she is afraid of not being heard. Her character really comes alive until the end.

• YEOM MI-JEONG (Kim Ji-Won)

  What is the character of the youngest in this drama? Passive. Really passive. Growing up among very noisy people like her two brothers, Mi-Jeong is the one who is passive in communication, but the favourite of her parents because she is the fastest in action. She never seems to complain, and continues to live her life. Empty. That's the impression the audience will get while watching Yeom Mi-Jeong's role.

  An early 30-year-old woman who works as a kintrak employee in Seoul and receives unfair treatment by her superiors, is not appreciated for her work in the company, and her introverted state is forced to actively socialise. MI-Jeong is disgusted with the world around her that seems to not let her be alone and calm.

  Mi-Jeong, who is like this, turns out to be a woman who needs to be supported to be more courageous and not feel empty. Kim Ji-Won played her role very well.

SUMMARY

If you want a quiet but emotionally draining spectacle, want to see the other side of Korean dramas that are not merely Seoul and other crowded cities, I highly recommend My Liberation Notes. It's perfect to watch with family. What I realised later is that even an hour and a half distance in a developed country like Korea can be very difficult to access by car.
